somethingsright··on Artemis moon suit designed by Axiom Space and Prada revealed in Milan
Any color can be used for greenscreen, and blue is often used as second preference to green. I am guessing green is used as that is the least occurring color on a character's clothes or objects in the household.

> What is the purpose of the word vegetarian

For most people Vegetarian means no animal is killed - so eggs are ok.

In fact, some people claim egg is veg to convince people to consume eggs as protein source. For proper clarity, some people use eggetarian for eggs allowed.

Seafood as veg, I guess is more a concept outside India, as consuming seafood is not seen as killing animals.

Depending on how the question was interpreted, Vegetarian might mean: May eat outside, but will not cook non-veg at home May eat non-veg only if veg option is not available.

Kind Advice for the meat eaters when lunch is brought in office:

-- Do not finish the only 2 vegetarian sandwiches because you wanted to see what the impossible burger tastes like.

-- Try not finish the cheese pizzas first and then touch the pepperonis later, if there are people who will come to the lunch table later

It is for this reason I always say Veg so that there is still some count available for people who need it.

Fun Facts:

Food packaging (and restaurant menus) in India show "signal" of green or red circle to indicate veg or not.

Airlines have a menu option of Hindu meal and Veg meal. Hindu meal can have chicken and omelet (or may not). Veg meal could be just salad and fruits. Many Indians pre-order Hindu and get confused when they get chicken. For me it is easier to pre-order Hindu and get cooked food with spices, and I can skip if it is chicken (or ask for veg).

[Jain meal is further restricted to veg grown above ground]

somethingsright··on Ask HN: What do you call “scriptable” software?
I just call it "configurable software". Doing the setup is formally called 'configuration' in SAP, and the implementors document the changes done in a 'configuration guide'.

I personlly would also like simpler names for the two other kinds of software: Custom-Of-The-Shelf, and, Bespoke.

Sorry, but I have no knowledge and do not understand what "editing remote" means? What is the use case?

The source files are in a shared network directory, but VS code (the editor) is on my machine? Or is it something different?

Where would the compiler reside? Will the Compile/Build be executed on my machine?

Edit: found some answers: https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/remote/remote-overview

somethingsright··on Refused U.S. visa eight times, Zoom CEO is now a billionaire
All countries require some confirmation you can pay for the stay and will get out. Some countries ask for a return ticket and hotel stay - it indicates that the traveller has some means of paying those amounts. US does not need those before visa issue. In many cases, people cancel the flight ticket after visa issue; and definitely book a more suitable hotel.

Anecdote time: Interpretation of the guidance is upto the visa issuing officer. Normally they want a ticket getting out of the destination country. But in one case the officer wanted me to 'return' back to the country where I was starting the travel from. So I had to show him the ticket for the third leg of the flight: A -> B -> C -> A

somethingsright··on Computer as Master Mind (1976) [pdf]
Have the list of choices at each step arrived at by brute-force, or is there some algorithm for that?

I think I read some algorithm for solving mastermind; but never tried understanding mastermind. For the related game of Cows-and-Bulls, there is a elegant algorithm that goes on reducing the list of candidates at each turn. Starting with 9999 potential numbers seems like a lot, but that solution also quickly terminates (7 guesses max, I think).

somethingsright··on Does Not Work
Because I am available for certain questions. I am available for "quick" questions which only I would know the answer to, and for critical questions. I want to defer "easy" questions which the questioner can easily find the answer to, but is lazy or incompetent. In my role, I will get questions from downright simple "how do I reset my password", or was a certain move-to-production done; to some really critical ones, or, where others move on my go-ahead. The move-to-production query means different things based on who is asking. One person asks only because a end-user or their manager wants to know the status. Another person is asking that as a start of "we are seeing something strange in production" on a related functionality. So, I ignore the first person when actually busy, and attend to the second person right away always.

Also, there are people change the status to 'busy' when they are not actually available, extended lunches and what-not. And there are more people who forget to reset their status to 'available'. So setting status to 'busy' is no guarantee that you will not get a ping. Or a phone-call.

somethingsright··on India's demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes
It will work for the current undeclared income. Soon people will begin hoarding the new currency notes. Or become wise and not stash money in currency.

Under the recent tax amnesty scheme if somebody had declared rental income, or business income, they will have to continue declaring it for years to come.

I personally believe that the bigger players in undeclared income are not keeping it in cash, they have assets bought in the names of trusted people, be it cars or properties.

And that is the difference here. Corruption is big players. Undeclared income was for avoiding taxes by mostly regular people.

Corruption had already found a work-around. And even if not, it was free money when they got it; they might not miss it. Regular people were trying to save 30 paise to a rupee that they earned, they will now have to pay it.

The current method is a way to fight black money. For corruption there are other ways, and maybe some will be taken.

On the contrary, real estate market will stop for next couple of months. Cash is a big component of the price for the seller. And the current cash is useless as it has to be deposited in banks and declared, thus removing the whole rationale for taking cash. The seller is already paying tax on the non-cash portion.
somethingsright··on India's demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes
The circulation of new notes will have to be controlled because there will be a limited notes in circulation for some time. The distribution problem has to be solved to ensure everybody have enough notes for daily activities. It would be interesting to see how the notes make it to all the bank branches and ATMs in the next two days and beyond. ATMs are unavailable for 2 days, bank branches for 1 day.
