sombrero_john··on How to become a pure mathematician or statistician (2008)
Your personal experience does not line up with the empirical evidence at all.

Some people are (much) smarter than others. It sucks, but that's life.

Renting is perfectly fine. NYC has the strongest tenant protection laws in the country.

There are many teachers, social workers, and bartenders living on the UWS. Hardly the top 0.1%.
sombrero_john··on iPhone dumbphone
There are plenty of non-social-media time-wasters. Reddit, YouTube, and the site you're on right now are just some examples.

Way too much friction. I don't have the luxury of going "off the map" for a week.
sombrero_john··on Can an email go 500 miles in 2025?
You answered your own question. IT staff is expensive, a SaaS subscription less-so.
sombrero_john··on Yes I Will Read Ulysses Yes
Ulysses is the kind of book people read just so they can tell other people that they read it.
sombrero_john··on A single line of code cost $8000
We are providing users with valuable features at a faster rate, saving them and us time, which is a far more valuable asset than "the user's battery, CPU, memory, bandwidth, the company's cloud costs and energy usage".

> Instead of writing better software, which might slow down development, just spend more money.

Except this is unironically a great value proposition.

sombrero_john··on Tesla has the highest fatal accident rate of all auto brands, study finds

sombrero_john··on Is it better to fail spectacularly?
Dig a little deeper into your dataset and you will find that the reason these people didn't end up homeless is because most of them have well-off / supportive families, trust funds, or Ivy League degrees.

That said I agree that people give in to fear too much, which prevents them from taking risks.

OP is obviously ranting because they are frustrated and dejected. Have a little empathy.

lol
sombrero_john··on Status Limbo
Those examples are different because they are not voluntary entrances into status limbo. They are just examples of loss of status.
sombrero_john··on Status Limbo
Being the "fun" guy is cool up until about the age of 25, and even then you aren't really taken seriously in the dating world.

After that, a potential mate will take the stable, serious guy 9 times out of 10.

sombrero_john··on Status Limbo
I call that "dating".

Just for fun -- make a Hinge profile and set your first picture to one of you in a white coat with a stethoscope around your neck.

Watch the likes pile up, and then come back and tell me that "no-one cares about status".

sombrero_john··on Status Limbo
Everyone cares about status, consciously or subconsciously.
sombrero_john··on Status Limbo
The ability to enter and exit "status limbo" is a sign of high status. Most people don't have the luxury of quitting their job to "explore something new".
