snoopen··on Pornhub: Judge rules Visa can be sued in abuse claim
Seems like this misuse of the legal system would be a good way for a judge with bias against porn to drastically destabilise the industry. I'm not at all surprised tho considering it's a US court.
snoopen··on Cross-compiling binaries for Windows is easier than building natively
WiX is great. I have been using it for over a decade to package an internal application. It's all driven by a simple text file which I liked over Microsoft's packaging offerings.
snoopen··on Android 12 forces you to choose a default browser unless you disable Chrome
I just read their install instructions and there are over 20 steps to follow.
snoopen··on The case for induction cooking
Do you have a source for amp standards? My limited search suggests much of EU have 10A plugs. Also here in AU our standard is also 10A along with our NZ family.
snoopen··on State of JavaScript 2021
I'm quite fond of Vuejs. It's easy to get started... my first experience with it was too drop in the CDN link and start with the basic example. It can easily do anything react can do.
snoopen··on Fast File Finder for Windows is a tool for quickly finding files by name
I think 'find ./ -iname file' does the same on Linux?
snoopen··on New Zealand to ban cigarettes for future generations
I'm kind of surprised about the negative reaction to this.

Keep in mind the NZ health system provides universal cover. So unlike the US for example it's tax payers who cover the medical bill if your cancer sticks give you cancer and seek treatment.

Education only goes so far. People are easily fallible in the face of peer pressure, perceived societal elevation and outside market advertising.

Finding simple pleasure in something is not a good enough reason to keep something legal.

I'd welcome a similar ban here in Australi. If for no other reason than to protect others especially given the number of people I still see to this day smoking around infants and children.

snoopen··on The internet is held together with spit and baling wire
Sure, certificates can be time consuming at the moment but that will only get easier. Just like hosting the underlying website.

The number of sites that should have had SSL but didn't was laughable and justification enough for browsers to require SSL.

I don't know if you're being deliberately alarmist, but 2FA is a huge peace of mind when done correctly with one time codes. Those don't require phone numbers and is the properly secure method.

Sure the old internet was a bit more fun and carefree, but it became far less fun when you had your online accounts compromises because of weak or non existent security.

snoopen··on Show HN: Writing embedded firmware using Rust
Where you talk about memory management, you say there are two types, manual and gc. But after that you refer to "manual memory management" as just "memory management".
snoopen··on Show HN: Writing embedded firmware using Rust
Also there is Circuitpython and MicroPython. Probably less ideal for production. But capable enough for those less familiar with programming.
snoopen··on Excel as Code
Not sure what you are trying to achieve but the majority of Excel formulas I see used most should be relatively easy to reimplement. Some like SUMPRODUCT, AGGREGATE and the specialised finance ones might be harder to reimplement. The trickier bit might be getting the evaluation order right.
snoopen··on Excel as Code
Most of these are easy to work around our aren't unique to Excel: 1 & 2) isn't unique to Excel, incorrect inputs will give incorrect results in code too 3, 4 & 5) worked around by getting the internal raw numeric value then formatting it as required.
snoopen··on Bringing “The Elements of Typographic Style” to the Web
I agree. Typography is as much about style as it is legibility. It's a science and an art balancing between the two.

Though it's not too my taste, overall it is a reasonably cohesive design, with only the code blocks standing out like a sore thumb.

I remember reading an article years ago on A List Apart that sent me on the typography journey. I wonder if there are any other outstanding resources to read on the topic?

snoopen··on Photographic Reference Scale (2019)
I'm curious if there are any good methods for correcting lens distortion. Like can I print a poster, take a photo and use that to create a correction map?
snoopen··on Only Windows 11 Pro will let you install Windows 11 with a local account
You can certainly pirate Windows, even Pro, insofar as activating it without paying for a license.
snoopen··on Norton 360 antivirus now lets you mine Ethereum cryptocurrency
Norton, unhappy with how fast computers are beginning, has developed ground breaking technology that will grind your machine to a halt.
snoopen··on Beads: Computer language and toolchain
A lot of bold claims here. As someone who's worked on a lot of Excel business tools I can tell you there's no way something like this could replace anything in the companies I've worked for.
snoopen··on Inkscape 1.1
I read the criticism as fair and constructive, not condescending at all.
snoopen··on Butterick’s Practical Typography 2º Edition
I am okay with people choosing whatever font they like, it's their content and their artistic freedom to do so. You HAVE to download their font to the same extent you have to download their images and CSS.

There's always reading mode for when their choices aren't compatible with a given configuration.

Having said that, I haven't come across many if any sites that don't render well because of poor font choices.

snoopen··on LeoCAD 21.03
I don't understand this reaction. Fusion360 continues to be free (as in beer) for personal. Not only that but startups can apply for a free licence each year.
snoopen··on Texas Instruments sent a DMCA takedown to a site archiving data sheets
What makes you think it's the OSHW community? If TI will work with you only if you're high vol then I could see a lot of smaller businesses seeing this tactic working against them too.
snoopen··on I asked GPT-3 for the question to “42”

snoopen··on The Linux Commands HandBook

snoopen··on Fastest star ever seen is moving at 8% the speed of light
Came here to ask exactly this. Not knowing much about relativity leaves me wondering if this is actually significant?
snoopen··on Autodesk criticised by architects
MS Office, or at least Word and PowerPoint have lacked innovation to the user experience on a fundamental level. Years ago they overhauled the UI because people weren't using many of the features on offer. What they failed to do is make those features easy to use. Prime example is numbered lists in Word which is still unnecessarily complicated to use. This isn't a compatibility issue, purely UX. Numbered lists are also buggy, like they were 15 years ago, and are still the best way to corrupt your document.
snoopen··on How Nespresso's coffee revolution got ground down
Absolutely. Pressurised baskets are great when all you want is acceptable coffee with minimal effort. A lot of popular home "espresso" machines come with one for this reason. Many or most Breville (Sage) machines come with one, even the "pro" machines.

I seriously recommend anyone thinking about a pod machine consider a cheap manual machine instead. I then recommend buying fresh ground beans from a local cafe. Not only are you reducing landfill but also supporting local business.

snoopen··on No More Coffee
Perhaps, but at 10 beverages a day caffeine is only part of the problem since they were no longer drinking black coffee. Even plain cow's milk on its own has some sugar.
snoopen··on No More Coffee
I've heard this too but need to see the numbers. I wonder if it's the caffeine per dry weight or per brewed serve. But don't get me started on what a serving of coffee is.
snoopen··on Push-Button Installer of macOS Guests in VirtualBox for Windows, Linux, macOS
Before I knew this I didn't know this.
snoopen··on VS Code was lost on shutdown with pending update (2018)
there's a lot of instances where the system can the file locked when you don't think you have it open. preview pane in file explorer used to open an instance of the relevant software to generate a preview thereby locking the file. most Adobe products can fail to release a lock. weird filenames can prevent deletion in file explorer, but cmd can delete. sometimes windows locks the file while a thumbnail is being generated. these are the things that keep me up at night
