snoopen··on Show HN: Gdocs-me-up: a high-fidelity Google Docs exporter
I haven't had a detailed look but yeah, I think most of this could be rolled into a Google App Script and made into an add-on. I actually did something similar years ago but for exporting to html for email, going through a few libraries for html and CSS manipulation and inlining.
snoopen··on Fine, I'll build my own text editor
So we take a web browser and trim it down to only ever show a single <textarea> element you say? That's what I'm taking away from this. All the hard work for accessibility is already done then right?
snoopen··on You might want to build your WebApp in Canvas instead of HTML
There is absolutely such a thing as a web app. What else would you call Google Docs, MS Word and the like?
snoopen··on Kuna: Decompiler Development in the Age of Coding Agents
I've used Claude with Ghidra MCP and had good success. It correctly identified and named MD5 functions, file IO functions, and the whole chain from a UI dialogue function. And when prompted it named all the interesting variables too.
snoopen··on Points are a weird and inconsistent unit of measure
Oh they're a super weird unit for sure. But I do kinda like that it allows expressing both 100ths of an inch and 10ths of a millimetre as an integer. I wonder if they're a carryover from early versions of MS Word when CPU power was more limited?
snoopen··on Show HN: Sheet Ninja – Google Sheets as a CRUD Back End for Vibe Coders
You can do this now directly in the Google environment. Should be trivial to vibe code Google Apps Script to hit a Slack endpoint. You'd probably use an 'on edit' trigger to run the code.
snoopen··on Show HN: Sheet Ninja – Google Sheets as a CRUD Back End for Vibe Coders
I'm not sure I see why this needs to be a paid service. Unless I understand incorrectly, you can get the same result for free, self contained, with freely available code like this: https://gist.github.com/richardblondet/ce87a397ef669d4d25dd2...
snoopen··on Dune3d: A parametric 3D CAD application
Even an AppImage would be great.
snoopen··on [dead]
I tried the colour game but found it terribly confusing.
snoopen··on Xfce is great
I like GNOME for the most part. But I really dislike needing an extension to change the date away from US format. Extensions in general seem unstable. Every now and then GNOME just locks up and I have to kill it from a terminal session to avoid losing my work.
snoopen··on Electronic nose for indoor mold detection and identification
It could be "old person smell"? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_person_smell
snoopen··on PuTTY has a new website
anything with "download" in the domain name looks scammy to me
snoopen··on Deepfake porn is destroying real lives in South Korea
That's a bold claim.
snoopen··on Hackers abuse popular Godot game engine to infect PCs
Has this type of attack been done with other game engines?
snoopen··on Argentinian Farmer Finds Family of 20k-Year-Old Car-Sized Armadillos
It's a pretty common convention, at least it's used a lot in my domains of interest. What do you not like about it?
snoopen··on Linux on the desktop is gaining ground
Are you on the AMD T14 Gen 3 or Intel? I've read the Intel ones are a bit better supported. I'm running Pop! OS with 6.6 kernel. Here's one of the bugs that affected me previously: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=214649 What are you running to have never had an issue?
snoopen··on Linux on the desktop is gaining ground
I'm also running an AMD Lenovo (Gen 3 T14) but can assure you there are still hardware support issues. The issues are rare, but there none the less. WiFi will occasionally be slow after resuming from sleep, the fingerprint reader will just stop working after a while (but can be recovered by restarting the USB device with a script), plugging in a USB3 monitor previously crashed my system but I think that was fixed in the recent kernel updates, and early on when I first got the laptop I had system resume issues. Last year I had bug regression break something, I think ethernet, was another month before that got re-fixed. I did buy it when it first hit the market so I wasn't surprised to have issues.
snoopen··on "Niksen": The art of doing nothing
> doing nothing is letting yourself drift along in your environment in the moment without a purpose.

I particularly like this definition. Moments like those I enjoy a lot.

snoopen··on Fossil is quitting smartwatches
I recently was looking at this for my partner. The best two options I've seen so far is the Withings ScanWatch (actually the ScanWatch 2 I think was recently released) and the Garmin Vivomove Trend. I don't have direct experience with them but from my research they seem decent. Of course they have limits compared to a full smartwatch.
snoopen··on Paste without formatting on macOS
I much prefer the approach of applying emphasis, be it italics, bold, all-caps etc, on top of plain text. To me this is the most versatile approach and I think is better for accessibility.

A sentence with italics or any other emphasis should read exactly the same without that emphasis. Where the same isn't true of capitalisation.

snoopen··on Just paying Figma because nothing else works
A good craftsman should also be capable of making and improving their own tools. A woodworker with a bad chisel simply reshapes it.

Relating back to software as tools, this only works if you have access to the tool code.

snoopen··on Elastic Tab Stops (2017)
Maybe I'm being naive, but doesn't this add unnecessary noise to diffs, making it harder to see subtle changes?
snoopen··on Ads in the OS
It's better in that you have no ads. But if anything it feels like a side step or backwards step in terms of usability.

There are three things driving me mad at the moment. One, despite having my audio muted I still get audible notifications for something, haven't figured it out. Two, volume control no longer works with my Jabra bluetooth earphones. Third, no amount of trying to convince Windows Explorer otherwise can I stop my downloads folder and it's sub-folders from going back to being grouped by date, which I hate.

snoopen··on Ads in the OS
I love Linux and despise $MS in general. VS Code is the only thing from them I genuinely enjoy using. Since most of it is open source I have some confidence it will escape the usual $MS enshitification, or at least VS Codium. There's just not anything I've come across that's as versatile.
snoopen··on Robotic arm made out of glass
I love the whimsical nature of this creation. There's no detailed engineering, no precise computer control. Just an idea brought to life using what tools and skills she had available to her in the moment.
snoopen··on MSFT is forcing Outlook and Teams to open links in Edge and IT admins are angry
No, it's absolutely the right framing.

This isn't a setting that allows admins to force a browser for security.

This is obviously about MS trying to force the uptake of Edge and nothing more.

snoopen··on Microsoft agrees to stop bundling Teams with Office
WSL was essential to keeping people using Windows which they then use to railroad you with dark patterns into using their Cloud services and browser. On first install and every significant update they make it very difficult to not use their cloud services. With Edge they don't let you turn off the spammy trashy ads on the new tab page unless you're a pro user or corporation or something.

Anything MS does that seems nice like TypeScript, C#, VSCode etc is the exception not the rule.

snoopen··on Microsoft agrees to stop bundling Teams with Office
Word Processors for one, and possibly the whole Office suite.

There have been no significant updates to sore points in Word such as: bullets and numbering that are convoluted to create and can completely corrupt; VBA IDE is probably unchanged since the 90s and the language itself has had little to no improvements.

Office 365 has only made things worse: collaboration features will randomly drop your formatting; auto-save can disable itself in some conditions; even with auto-save on, there can be significant lag between collaborators.

PowerPoint, years ago, lost the ability to record macros... it's still missing even though you can write macros and run them.

Don't even get me started on how much of a joke their "OpenXML" format is.

There's been so much potential in the Office suite that's been squandered by MS focusing on adding half baked features rather than making a truly solid product.

snoopen··on Smokeless_UMAF: Access AMD hidden BIOS settings
It's not so much a software resuming that's the issue. It's hardware like wifi, UBS, displays or even bits of the CPU not waking up or misbehaving after suspend. I sometimes have to disable and re-enable wifi for it to work solid again.
snoopen··on Laying Out a Print Book with CSS
Does CSS support baseline grids? Since pagination isn't really a thing in CSS in guessing not?
