snalty··on Welcome to Libera Chat
I think it's all the people jumping ship from freenode rather than HN.
snalty··on iPad Pro M1
My specific use case but I have my NAS mounted on the iPad files app and use that to transfer files.
snalty··on Home-Built Scanning Tunneling Microscope (2015)
False colour is pretty much standard for many imaging techniques including STM.
snalty··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: January/February 2021
Doesn't seem so but you could add an enhancement on the repo.

snalty··on Its the Sugar, Folks (2013)
Is peanut butter that is nothing but blended peanuts considered processed?
snalty··on Tesco removes 20M items of plastic from Christmas range
For what it's worth, you can install the Clubcard app, add your Clubcard to Apple Pay from within the app, then uninstall it and the card will stay in Apple Pay.
snalty··on When X-Rays were used at the Shoe Store
I remember seeing and using the one from 1996 in my early childhood as displayed in this article:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32738088#_=_

Not sure if these actually used X-rays but it'd be interesting to find out if they did.

EDIT: In hindsight, I really don't think the type I remember used X-rays.

ANOTHER EDIT: Looks like this is the company that made the ones I can remember: http://sensatech.com/applications/index.html

snalty··on Bitoduc: A French dictionnary for CS related words
I love how BYOD has been translated to AVEC, which is French for 'with'.
snalty··on Rust 1.45
I'm building an embedded project that currently runs a python script for automatic brightness. It takes a brightness value from a sensor over I2C, applies a function to get an appropriate LCD brightness value and then sends that to the display driver over a serial port. Would this be an appropriate project to write in Rust to learn the basics of this language?
snalty··on EU opens Apple antitrust investigations into App Store and Apple Pay practices
While true, it's worth noting that Google do not reportedly take a cut of Google Pay transactions while Apple reportedly do take a cut. This could incentivise banks to move away from Apple Pay.
snalty··on EU opens Apple antitrust investigations into App Store and Apple Pay practices
>If Apple were forced to allow NFC access, third party stores and real side-loading, then nothing would change for you. You could continue to use their app store [0] and their payment app just like you are doing now.

Not necessarily, if banks pull out of Apple Pay you might end up having to open each banking app every time you want to use that card, rather than having easy access to all your cards in one app (Apple Pay).

snalty··on Making a Googol:1 Reduction with Lego Gears
Sorry, I know this is very off topic but I found the video fascinating and thought other people would enjoy it too. Feel free to remove if this is too far from the point of HN.
snalty··on Using an iPad as the main display for a Mac Mini
I have an AbuseMark board as well, despite not having used it yet as I don't have the right display connector the service was excellent and can vouch for them too. I had a cheap chinese board first which didn't support brightness control, but the AbuseMark boards support brightness control over serial so that's nice.
snalty··on The 1-Bit Instrument
This video explains how they used 1-bit sound to generate Pikachu's sounds in Pokemon Yellow on the Game Boy.

snalty··on Surface Go 2, Surface Book 3, Surface Headphones 2 and Surface Earbuds
For what it's worth, you might be able to copy over comics using a USB drive now. You can definitely copy comics over a network share as an alternative, as the Files app supports mounting samba shares.

EDIT: of course that doesn't help with the loading of open source software on the device.

snalty··on Super Mario 64 port for Windows and Linux supposedly based On leaked source code
I think it's more likely that this is based on this decompilation someone did rather than the source leak, so hopefully that's less legally shady and we will see a repo or blog post soon.

snalty··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
I can't find a source for this right now, but IIRC USB-C was designed such that the cable was always the weak point, so in cases of extreme stress the cable will break before the port does.
snalty··on $50 Odroid-C4 Raspberry Pi 4 Competitor Combines Amlogic S905X3 SoC with 4GB RAM
iPhones use NVMe storage and have done since the iPhone 6S and the quality of the NAND chips has been increasing since the iPhone 6.
snalty··on A Year with the Surface Go
I thought apple devices used nvme storage now?
snalty··on Long S
I was momentarily confused by these when I saw them in some old journal articles on PubMed. There's a load if you search a really generic term and sort oldest to newest.
snalty··on Ask HN: A modern-looking UML diagram tool?
i just use inkscape
snalty··on Ask HN: How is punctuality enforced in your organization?
Do your contracted hours, we're flexible, but don't take it too far. If you're going to be in about half an hour later than normal, let someone know.
snalty··on How to Practice Python Skills
I think the thing that most helped me learn python was having a project planned beforehand. I'd tried many times before to learn programming and failed, but having a project and a certain goal to work towards really spurred me on.
