snalty··on Microduck
Ugh, PAL only? I'll wait for the NTSC version.
snalty··on The early History of the Singular Value Decomposition (1993) [pdf]
Can anyone suggest a starting point to be able to read mathematics papers like this and understand them?
snalty··on Show HN: Shumai – open-source Frame.io alternative for creative work
It reminded me of the Welsh informal greeting "shwmae"
snalty··on The Xkcd thing, now interactive
This reminds me of one of my favourite flash games, Fantastic Contraption, for some reason.
snalty··on IPv6 just turned 30 and still hasn't taken over the world
For those in the UK who want a static IPv4 or IPv6 block AAISP offer a L2TP service for £2/month. It's limited to 3 megabit/s but might be enough for some use cases.
snalty··on Valve is about to win the console generation
> reasonably priced storage upgrades

To be fair to Sony here, the PS5 uses a normal m.2 NVME SSD for storage upgrades.

snalty··on John Carmack on mutable variables
Yeah, here's an example: https://play.rust-lang.org/?version=stable&mode=debug&editio...
snalty··on Diamond Thermal Conductivity: A New Era in Chip Cooling
This reminded me of this: https://www.innovationcooling.com/products/ic-diamond/?srslt... which seemed to be all the rage in PC building 10 years ago
snalty··on I accidentally became PureGym’s unofficial Apple Wallet developer
Great work! I did something similar before with supermarket loyalty cards before Wallet support was widespread, even had the. Co-op loyalty balance on the card which updated.
snalty··on Whatever happened to cheap eReaders?
I mostly read on an old iPad mini. The screen is good enough for me that I don't feel like I'm missing out by reading on a non E-ink screen.
snalty··on Baby is healed with first personalized gene-editing treatment
It’s not the use of Uracil/Urimidine that bypasses the immune system. RNA uses Uracil instead of thymine in all organisms afaik, and RNA viruses certainly exist. It’s pseudouridine that’s the magic stuff.
snalty··on Mass spectrometry method identifies pathogens within minutes instead of days
This is cool, but I still see sequencing and metagenomics as being the gold standard going forward.
snalty··on Building a BitTorrent client from the ground up in Go (2020)
CodeCrafters has a BitTorrent client building challenge that I watched Jon Gjengset do on a stream, if someone wants to try and build their own client in an iterative and checked way.

snalty··on Hinkley Point C: Building Britain's first nuclear reactor in 30 years
It's about time our national infrastructure benefitted from foreign taxpayer money, considering how often it's been the other way around! Especially with the railways.
snalty··on Can you convert a video to pure CSS?
The first demo doesn't work for me in Firefox, either.
snalty··on A custom Zigbee doorbell (2023)
Oh, I have a spare IKEA button. Might have to give this a try.
snalty··on Juno – A YouTube Client for Vision Pro
I'm quite liking Winston for Reddit.

snalty··on EE is working with Qualcomm to add Wi-Fi 7 to consumer broadband hubs
I don't think the Openreach ONT is going away for BT FTTP customers any time soon, so for now you are free to just plug whatever router you want into your ONT.
snalty··on Lego 3-axis styrofoam cutter [video]
My initial comment when opening the video was "Of course it's Akiyuki". I love the GBC modules on the channel.
snalty··on This Word Does Not Exist
I got "microdosing" which I'm pretty sure is a word.

The definition was new though: "the injection of small amounts of a drug to a microdialysis unit"

snalty··on Mjolnir
Currently running a T1 with a 5800X and a 3070 and loving it too, it really is a great little case.
snalty··on Modernizing my 1980s sound system
This would have been a perfect opportunity to use a Chromecast audio, it's a shame Google canned it when it was still useful.
snalty··on Design the next iPhone
The port actually does support USB 3. If you look in an iPhones Lightning port you'll see that only one side of the port actually has contacts and that's why it's USB 2 only. Some Lightning iPads support USB 3 and they have contacts on both sides of the port.
snalty··on In praise of the humble Sheffield stand
there's dozens of us!
snalty··on DigitalOcean: New $4 Droplet and updated pricing
Eh, I'm probably going to move to Hetzner or Linode anyway as apparently a lot of DO IPs are blacklisted for mail.
snalty··on Apple hit with EU antitrust charge over its payment technology
I personally think this is probably the right decision, however I hope banks still offer both Apple Pay and their own option. Being able to switch cards from within the wallet app is a much better experience than having to open another banking app (and potentially having to sign in to that app), or having to change the default system payments app to use the card I want.

Although I live in the UK so this probably won't affect me.

snalty··on Amazon Pip Horror Story
I remember seeing this as a shitpost on linkedin
snalty··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
There's a cool working example of this at Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield, England.
snalty··on Valneva and Pfizer announce Phase 2 study for Lyme disease vaccine candidate
Previous lyme disease vaccines used a membrane protein, so probably that.
snalty··on How to Hack APIs in 2021
I hate SPAs but I like APIs as I can build my own programs that add missing features to make my life easier.
