Similarly there have been distributed render farms for graphic design for a long time. No incentives other than higher points means your jobs are prioritized.

sn0wf1re··on Full Speed Ahead: EV Study Reveals Impacts of Fast Charging
I am curious of this study as it goes against the common idea that fast charging is bad for battery health. I'm a little sad they used Tesla for the data source as their range values are alleged to be flawed, but understandable due to the high sample size.

sn0wf1re··on Cruise robo-taxis involved in 2 San Francisco crashes in the same night
> Are there circumstances in which it is acceptable (and/or legal in the USA) for a car, autonomous or manned, to drive directly into the path of an emergency vehicle giving warning?

Did the autonomous vehicle move into the path of the emergency vehicle? Did it simply stop and fail to clear the intersection? I can't find any video or explanation of the incident so I think "could have" is the correct grammer.

sn0wf1re··on Amish communities are adapting a surprising new technology in their homes
It's interesting that they dive into the climate change and health aspects of kerosene lamps but don't bother interviewing any Amish to see if that is actually the reason for switching. I would intuitively think that it is because they don't want to continue buying ever more costly kerosene.
sn0wf1re··on Busiest day ever for electric vehicle charging predicted on UK roads
That's kinda what they are saying though, no? That busy weekends will set and hold the record for a few months to a year and then they will be broken again as the number of EVs is growing in the steep section of the logistics curve right now.
sn0wf1re··on In the Asian Flu of 1957-58, they rejected lockdowns (2021)
Yes, I agree that there is a temptation for those in power. Legal frameworks can be created to try and limit the lengths and conditions under which a "crisis mode" can be enacted, but there will always be people looking for more power.
sn0wf1re··on In the Asian Flu of 1957-58, they rejected lockdowns (2021)
Personal freedom can be a bad idea in crisis situations. Selflessness and following procedure can be better for the collective. This is why crisis operators follow checklists rather than giving each individual absolute personal freedom.
sn0wf1re··on 2048 Bit RSA and the Year 2030
It does though. If it failed to rise today due to some cosmic anomaly, it would very likely fail to rise tomorrow.

sn0wf1re··on Honda Monkey Breaks World Record Covering 4,183 Km on Single Tank

It's a theorem. And yes, it requires the monkeys to be random. And yes, it was tested with monkeys and the results were mainly the letter 's' repeated.

sn0wf1re··on Why Nobody Will Do Anything Until It's Too Late
Huh. Today I learned. https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020SJRUE..24..669A/abstra...

I always thought the difference was larger for a coal powered electric vehicle.

sn0wf1re··on APIs for content sites must be free
It will no longer be free to browse how you like. You will be forced to use Reddit's Apps, Reddit's website, etc. Along with the tracking and restrictions that they impose (Future removal of NSFW is an example of a restriction).
sn0wf1re··on Antarctica gained 600 Gt of ice during '09-'19 vs. a prediction of a 20k Gt loss
You're welcome, I too was confused at first.
sn0wf1re··on Antarctica gained 600 Gt of ice during '09-'19 vs. a prediction of a 20k Gt loss
No. Antarctica did not necessarily gain ice, this study does not discuss the Antarctic ice sheets. This study is about the ice shelves (sea ice).
sn0wf1re··on Lawyer cited 6 fake cases made up by ChatGPT; judge calls it “unprecedented”
That's GPT-4, not ChatGPT (3.5-turbo I think).

Also, yes you can get correct information by tailoring your prompts, but that isn't the issue. The issue is that some prompts lead to bad results and confusing/incorrect answers. You changed what OP queried by providing the riddle and asking for hints to that riddle, whereas OP asked for a random riddle and then hints to that riddle.

sn0wf1re··on Many soft contact lenses in US made up of PFAS, research suggests
> 75% chance that within 5 to 7 years there could be a period of no ice cap [paraphrasing]

If you look at the trend line between 1995 and 2010 in the NASA data this was a reasonable prediction. The Northwest passage is now open for the first time in recorded history, things are melting fast.

> ...Bob used the figure of 2030...

Last I checked it wasn't 2030 yet.

NASA has a nice* video of the North polar ice cap. https://climate.nasa.gov/climate_resources/155/video-annual-...

* It's okay, the graph doesn't have a zero-indexed base which it should.

Edit: Also Antarctica is the South ice cap, not the North, which is the video clip you linked.

sn0wf1re··on US may default on debt as soon as June 1, Yellen reaffirms
I think they are saying they would like to have the debt limit as a concept taken to court by Biden ignoring it. The debt limit itself is not explicitly in the constitution.
sn0wf1re··on U.S. Hits Z-Library with New Domain Name Seizures
Kill a tree just so that you can feel morally correct and the author gets a 2¢ royalty? Naw, just pirate and don't feel bad since apparently that is what publishers want you to do[0]. Maybe buy the author a coffee if you ever run into them.

[0] based on their actions it sure seems like this is the case.

sn0wf1re··on Show HN: Open-source Auth0 alternative Ory Kratos v0.13 released – nearing v1.0
Isn't that aspect of Keycloak a carryover from the days when one VM held one instance of an application? These days containers are cheap and you can just spin up each "realm" in another container.
sn0wf1re··on The dream of polio eradication might need a rethink
Is time really the bottleneck? Those easy injectors that are used for epipens can be used by anyone. Perhaps there is an option for something like that.
sn0wf1re··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Eh, menu for basic colour calibration would be nice, doesn't need CEC for that though. I do agree with throwing out the speakers, many people have at least a sound bar and those that don't are unlikely to want this product (That market wants all in ones). I also agree with the tuner, there would be no DVR, signal filtering, etc on the TV but those may be desirable and would therefore require an external tuner anyways.

Every one of your examples in the second list is relevant to both on-prem and cloud. Also cloud also has on-call, just not for the hardware issues (still likely get a page for reduced availability of your software).
