sn0wf1re··on Ollama is now powered by MLX on Apple Silicon in preview
That would be pretty cool if the model was a little more useful, but it isn't very good. And the guardrails are hilariously bad.

cmd print first and last line from stdin
    $ echo -n | tail -n 2

cmd print first and last line from stdin using sed
error: [guardrail] The request was blocked by Apple's safety guardrails. Try rephrasing.

sn0wf1re··on MAID in Canada
According to StatsCan it is actually a bit more, but varying year-to-year. Pre-Covid it looks like it was closer to 27% or 28%, now closer to 26%. So a lot of room to grow, if we made the assumption that all those dying of cancer would prefer to choose their date of passing. Personally, I think the more immediate source of growth in the number of MAID administrations should come from those who died after requesting MAID but before MAID was able to be administered, which would give an increase of 19% in administrations.

sn0wf1re··on Show HN: Bracket – selfhosted tournament system
You could always just implement an interface such as apprise or webhooks and leave the complexity of SMS (cost) or other types of notifications up to the selfhoster.
sn0wf1re··on Why Canada Should Join the EU
"Justine" is what some people who disapprove of him are calling him. It's a mocking conspiracy theory that JT's wife left him due to him being transexual.
sn0wf1re··on A room temperature Li2O-based lithium-air battery enabled by a solid electrolyte
Looks like the created cell is 614 Wh/L from the above comment. Gasoline is ~2.2kWh/L [0]. So my take is that even with the created cell the density is not going to be an issue with car or grid batteries -- only <4 times the size even at this non-theoretical cell. Who knows how the packs will be configured though as I am sure airflow will be a design consideration when making larger packs.

[0] This uses the 3kWh/kg that was provided above and a density of gasoline of .75g/mL

    units
    You have: 0.7429 g/mL * 3 kWh/kg
    You want: kWh/L
 * 2.2287

sn0wf1re··on Instant macOS install on Proxmox including AMD patches
Neat, but this looks very specialized for a single person's config. I wouldn't want to run this on my machine seeing as it removes apt sources and does a bunch of other system changes unrelated to installing a macOS guest.

sn0wf1re··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
From what I have gathered, I assume average age of registered vehicles. I would also assume that collector cars would "pollute" the statistics, unless they are filtered out -- the details of the research are not stated.

sn0wf1re··on BYD EV teardown in Japan reveals secrets to its affordability
Screens are more expensive than buttons and knobs.

Making the screen into a touch screen with a digitizer is cheaper than buttons and knobs.

So if you already have a screen, making it a touchscreen is indeed cheaper.

sn0wf1re··on BYD EV teardown in Japan reveals secrets to its affordability
Touchscreens are more expensive than buttons and knobs. But screens are required by law in the USA and EU as they require backup cameras. And a digitizer is a lot cheaper than some buttons and knobs.
sn0wf1re··on iOS 18.2 Lets EU Users Delete App Store, Safari, Messages, Camera and Photos
Isn't that just a (expensive) library? And libraries are constantly being lobbied against by publishing groups, yet there doesn't seem to be major harm (financial) caused by them.
sn0wf1re··on Tesla Cybertruck Unexpectedly Accelerates into Home with Rear Wheels Locked

sn0wf1re··on Evidence of price-fixing in the oil industry?
As best I can tell[1], BCHydro isn't subsidized, unless you count the land usage grants from the province (but the water flow stability is useful for irrigation, so it has other benefits)

sn0wf1re··on Evidence of price-fixing in the oil industry?
Same with BCHydro. Not the cheapest, but still cheap. Much better than being at the whims of shareholders.
sn0wf1re··on Quiet quitting: You always had workers who did 9-5 but it's a creeping malaise
> The fact that not doing additional free work is framed as "quitting" is both ridiculous and sad.

Yeah, that's something I thought was strange in the article. My understanding of quiet quitting was that you did the bare minimum to not get fired, not "not going above and beyond".

sn0wf1re··on Electricity generated by fossil fuels in Great Britain drops to record low
> importing scrap wood long distances, such as from the US

From Western Canada too, and it isn't scrap. It's good timber that could otherwise be milled into lumber.

sn0wf1re··on Money bubble
Isn't that the point though? There is no need to make chat flow builders and pay the "handful of smart people" to figure them out.

If AI costs were reaching very high levels perhaps they would try to make non-AI flows for standard processes. But I think that is unlikely given how cheap AI is vs smart people wages.

sn0wf1re··on AdGuard Home: Network-wide ad- and tracker-blocking DNS server
It isn't a firewall, it's a DNS server that returns fake results for entries in its blocklist.
sn0wf1re··on Post-Serverless Era Trends
I'm personally a fan of the mono-microlith (or whatever people call it), where you compartmentalize the monolith so that it's a just a flag of what "micro-services" are enabled on each instance. Easy to scale down on a dev machine (one process) and easy to scale out, the local procedure calls just become remote procedure calls (over HTTPS or whatever).
sn0wf1re··on Apple wants AI to run directly on its hardware instead of in the cloud
Yeah, apparently well enough to run a web service off of iPhone image recognition!

sn0wf1re··on Ukraine forced to cut military operations as foreign aid dries up
Yeah, if I was polish I would be pro-(whatever would save me from Russia).
sn0wf1re··on What made Apollo a success? (1971) [pdf]
I think it was just you. The bias I got was that of anti current contractors and pro SpaceX. I feel this way since he implied that complex operations, such as refuelling in space, were only planned because the SLS was not powerful enough, and starship will be.
sn0wf1re··on Ukraine forced to cut military operations as foreign aid dries up
"Signing up for NATO" aka blackmailing their way into NATO in Poland's case. They really wanted into NATO. There wasn't an eastward expansion from NATO, the east came to NATO.
sn0wf1re··on Apple partly halts Beeper's iMessage app again, suggesting a long fight ahead
Yes it does fallback. There are two situations where it does so

1. The sender cannot connect to the imessage server 2. The receiver does not connect to the imessage server, on any of the devices registered to receive at that particular address.

I know both methods happen since I didn't used to have data and I would receive SMSs when someone sent me an imessage and I was out and about.

This[1] was posted yesterday. I think people are hopeful that ammonia production can be made cheap enough to use as a seasonal battery or for applications such as planes or ships.
