sn0w_crash··on Casinos Target a Vulnerable Clientele: Older Asian Gamblers
Can someone explain the significance of gambling in Asian cultures? I noticed this growing up with many Taiwanese friends. There seems to be some cultural component to “luck” but I don’t know if that’s ethnic or something else
sn0w_crash··on People Hate the Idea of Car-Free Cities–Until They Live in One
I never understood why does the bicycle crowd feel the need to push everyone else to ride bicycles? We are happy for them, why do we need to join them?

I personally do not feel safe on a bike in a crowded city. Even if you took cars out of the equation. I also do not want to arrive to work/meetings sweaty and in need of a towel. It’s also very cold where I live. My car is warm.

There are numerous reasons I’m not interested in riding a bike. Yet I can’t go more than a day without someone from the bicycle church trying to give me a pamphlet.

sn0w_crash··on Toyota CEO Says “Silent Majority” of Auto Industry Is Doubting EV-Only Future
As a rule, anytime an intellectual attempts to carpet-bomb someone’s argument with “as a rule”, i just stop reading.
sn0w_crash··on The Imperial Supreme Court
So It’s not imperial when it’s the other way around? Only when it’s ideologically misaligned with the author?
sn0w_crash··on The Twitter Files: How Twitter Rigged the Covid Debate
The thing is there are many people who are fine with this because their preferred party is in charge.

They do not care if these obviously dystopian abuses of power are wrong because they are ideologically aligned with those in power (at least, they think they are)

sn0w_crash··on Riots Erupt After MIT Enforces Free Speech Mandate
Thank you, judging by the overwhelmingly positive response to this news I think folks are prepared for your “consequences”

Also this is satire FYI

sn0w_crash··on She Worked for Twitter. Then She Tweeted at Elon Musk.
Yaaaas Queen
sn0w_crash··on [dead]
It is common knowledge that the US was doing GoF research in Wuhan.

Is every uncomfortable reality now a far right conspiracy theory?

sn0w_crash··on The Spies Who Loved Twitter
The thing to note is that people are totally fine with this fact. They want the private sector working with their party of choice, they are not interested in any potential or realized negatives.
sn0w_crash··on Taxpayers paying billions for the renovations and construction of NFL stadiums
“TAxeS PaY foR tHe rOaDs and HiGhWayS”
sn0w_crash··on Mastodon Is Hurtling Toward a Tipping Point
I have yet to meet a single real person with a mastodon account and I’ve worked in tech for decades.
sn0w_crash··on ‘Glass Onion’ Is About Living in the Age of Musk, Ye and Trump
Of course it is. Media is no longer about timeless storytelling, well written characters or plots that we will discuss for years on end.

All media must be about CurrentThing. There is no other lens or nuance for one to look at the world. everything is about Trump, politics, racism, and whatever currentThing is currently.

This approach leads to a few “YAAAS QUEEN!” tweets today …. But these films will not be relevant or discussed even 5 years from now. And that’s sad because there are many talented people involved in this stuff.

sn0w_crash··on The inherent misogyny of AI portraits – Amelia Earhart rendered naked on a bed
If you think you are less attractive than the subject of the nudity then yes, it’s hateful. In fact everything is hateful if you can write a 1,000 word post about why it’s hateful.
sn0w_crash··on New School Occupation Demands

sn0w_crash··on Ask HN: Why is Tesla stock dropping? Meta?
He’s also attracting a ton of right wingers who never would have bought a Tesla.

I wonder if there’s a strategy there

sn0w_crash··on Update on Elimination of Harmful Language Initiative in Stanford’s IT Community
Right the fact that they even need to mention it is bizarre
sn0w_crash··on LastPass user vaults stolen in recent hack
Again?
sn0w_crash··on Update on Elimination of Harmful Language Initiative in Stanford’s IT Community
I have read this twice and still have no idea what is being complained about or clarified.

Have we truly run out of real problems to solve? How is this an actual effort by someone at a prestigious university?

sn0w_crash··on Why Sex Is Mostly Binary but Gender Is a Spectrum (2016)
Most people don’t want to hear this. It’s an interesting ideology, but most normies don’t care.

I’m not on one side or another. That’s just what I’ve noticed for most people outside the upper class tech bubble.

sn0w_crash··on Elon Musk claims the FBI paid Twitter to 'censor info from the public.'
Anyone reading the files and ignoring both Musk and the corporate-owned media would arrive at a similar conclusion.

You need to do some mental gymnastics to assume this stuff is OK.

In 2014 we learned that the NSA paid RSA $10 million to put a backdoor into their encryption products. This stuff is not new.

sn0w_crash··on The Math Behind Meshuggah Riffs
Their drummer once joked that Meshuggah actually writes everything in 4:4

I wonder if there is something to that

sn0w_crash··on Musk’s Distraction Just One of Tesla’s Problems
You’d think the “paper of record” would be interested in how the FBI interacts with Twitter.

But nope, just another Tesla hit piece. yawn

sn0w_crash··on EU's 2021 greenhouse emissions fell 22% from 2008 peak
Covid year anyone?
sn0w_crash··on Ask HN: What assurance do early startup employees have against dilution?
But at that point the company is dead anyway, so it’s not about screwing OP out of their equity but about completely rebooting the company.
sn0w_crash··on Ask HN: What assurance do early startup employees have against dilution?
This is extremely rare and enough case law exists that you would be able to sue them for doing so. It looks extremely nefarious in court and is a bigger headache than it’s worth.

I’ve never heard of this happening successfully. What you’re probably asking is “how can they screw me?” And the answer is if they terminate you before youre vested. That’s why as an early employee you want to negotiate some type of accelerated vesting schedule.

sn0w_crash··on Ask HN: What assurance do early startup employees have against dilution?
Short answer is none.

Everyone is diluted during a financing round.

Long answer: some early or critically important employees will receive grants after a round to offset some of the dilution.

sn0w_crash··on War on wokeness: the year the right rallied around a made-up menace
Diversity is not woke. Having a diverse cast of characters, employees, etc, is neither woke nor in any way bad.

“Woke” means using minorities and their very real struggles as pawns in a political debate, a corporate marketing campaign, a movie release, etc.

Woke is the corporatization and exploitation of people based on their gender, race, sexuality, etc.

A lot of people see through the scam and that’s why there’s pushback.

sn0w_crash··on Trey Parker and Matt Stone land $20M in funding for their deepfake VFX studio
Matt and Trey are geniuses behind South Park and the Book of Mormon. I suspect much of the valuation is based on them, not the tech.
sn0w_crash··on Twitter Aided The Pentagon in Its Covert Online Propaganda Campaign
Props to The Intercept for reporting on this. Notice how the corporate-owned legacy media still doesn’t pick the Twitter revelations up.
