smorgusofborg··on Wisconsin Judge Prevents Nurses from Going to New Employer
And of course a big problem has always been that Halliburton can't conscript you to improve their bottom line when fighting a foreign war. Good thing we are fixing that.
smorgusofborg··on Covid Booster Highly Effective Against Omicron
I know a few people who test negative on PCR tests but have identical symptoms due to a flu. Given the insane rate of omicron I wouldn't assume all these tests were wrong if one of them now tests positive..
smorgusofborg··on Kobo unveils Sideload Mode to their e-readers
AFAICT you can't just rely on USB mass storage, it is expecting their app to be present. I think there's an edit you can make to their MySQL database and maybe a calibre plugin does that?
smorgusofborg··on Show HN: An open source alternative to Google Analytics back end
Interesting. From your headline here I was hoping that you used the standard Google snippet with an override of the tracking host. I think it would be more powerful to save whatever the same GA setup would save.
smorgusofborg··on French moratorium on prion studies after two cases of fatal brain disease (2021)
The reference is to natural freshwater, especially if it is stagnant. Most travel clinics will give advice against swimming in ponds, etc.
smorgusofborg··on Cannabidiol inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication through induction of host ER stress
I'm not sure I understand what the cohort collaborative is doing but it sounds like being a patient in their matching that tests negative for COVID would be more likely if you had another reason to cough.
smorgusofborg··on Pine64 should re-evaluate their community priorities
It's quite the paradox that people are off doing weird stuff but they have no bootloader. The pmOS page refers to U-Boot like it exists and people seem to be working on the SoC and eink display at the rate they can.

Most other devices are consumer released so you get an old kernel that gets everyone at the top of the stack going right away, but then blocks mainlining since no one can correctly claim authorship of the implementation for the process of porting and fixing it.

smorgusofborg··on Dont Explain Yourself
It is still a larger attack surface. A salesperson can give a false impression about the value of the ongoing relationship over the transaction and make a ~promise that is not legally binding.

I.e. if you give the actual date you need something they may say they talked to a friend in logistics and they have it on good authority that it really should be here by then. Getting their offer with no indication of your requirements means any misrepresentations aren't tuned to your specific requirements.

smorgusofborg··on Felony charges are first in a fatal crash involving Autopilot
I'm still mystified as to why no country has switched over to ultra-light rail. The costs of asphalt projects seem to dwarf the cost of doing anything reasonable and leave AI as an exercise for the over confident.
smorgusofborg··on Workers are calling out sick in droves
> That Apple and Walmart and Rural King are agreeing on wages?

I guess you know more about Apple's more competent co-conspirators than I do:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7449737

But there's no need to do anything technically illegal companies discuss how to screw employees and customers as industry groups all the time. They reach agreements not to do various things and to co-ordinate spending on political lobbying. They will for example try to share your salary data using an intermediary to avoid one of them giving you a larger raise. That helps both companies that might lose you and companies that are trying to hire you for bellow what free market wages would settle on if we all had the same information.

smorgusofborg··on Workers are calling out sick in droves
Corporations are unwilling to let non-executive wages become a larger percentage of their costs. They are perfectly willing to spend on other things. It is rather remarkable that the consumer market works at all, yet it is almost overheating, the key to that is loans, lots of loans, many connected to equity in an intentional housing bubble.
smorgusofborg··on Ask HN: Why are we so at the mercy of Google and Mozilla for web browsers?
While servo shares an ecosystem with Firefox it is far more independent than chromium is so I would suggest it is the most likely emerging alternative browser engine and browsers built on it could become roughly as different from firefox as safari is to chrome.

It's not like other areas are so different, the number of compilers that are keeping up with LLVM and GCC has dwindled to the point that I can't name one without checking if it is EoL.

smorgusofborg··on Ask HN: Why are we so at the mercy of Google and Mozilla for web browsers?
From time to time I use surf, but it isn't a fair example of what is hard. Suckless.org's philosophy means you may need to recompile for any configuration change and something like trusting a self-signed cert is often done via configuration.
smorgusofborg··on Covid-19 breakthrough data
There's definite vaccine rate differences in industries, but much of that might be largely explained by age demographics of industries..

Given two people who WFH the vaccinated one can conveniently eat in a restaurant and go to the gym while the unvaccinated needs to get take out or is getting regular tests. I think vaccinated people have much more interaction with the virus unmasked in an indoor environment but much less likelihood of ever being tested when having light or no symptoms.

smorgusofborg··on Covid-19 breakthrough data
I don't really get the example of being able to work from home, but I would expect differences are extremely regional/national.

In some countries there's a formal labor law for doctors notes after X days that is known by all and which might mean your doctor checks and registers the case(?) in other places it is total discretion if a manager demands a note but rarely does in places that aren't shift work oriented.

smorgusofborg··on Student loan forgiveness is regressive measured by income, education, or wealth
Of course and there's no reason to refute this. The reason we got here is that the quantatative measures a Bank would use are biased by actual societal bias. This is a situation like asking why your ML became racist.

Letting a bank choose the interest rate based on your zip code would allow banks to predict which families will remain rich and that would be a self fulfilling continuation of current class distinctions in a system where they are allowed to do that.

smorgusofborg··on Rome: Decline and Fall Pt 1: Words
Spices, food oils, mined metals and fabric are all valuables that are brought to coastal cities in organized trade causing urbanization. The existence of many of those cities, their bazaar and their mosque is all to do with the transition to Byzantine and then only Ottoman trade. It would hardly be surprising if there are many ex-cities that had better trade connections with the western empire.
smorgusofborg··on The RISC-V Experience
I'm also optimistic, and I think starting with one of these porting processes often leads to an interesting set of yak shaves. I've been following the progress of the most active NixOS developer:

smorgusofborg··on Adolescent cannabis use and later development of schizophrenia
And now it is bad drugs.. AFAIK the argument against most environmental factors was that schizophrenia frequency seems similar globally after accounting for ways societies handle cases.

Given the ethical limitations on this kind of research, I think a research group that wants to talk about probable causation really needs a cross cultural method to randomly sample and demonstrate active case prevalence changes and to run that sampling over many years.

smorgusofborg··on Meta sued for £2.3bn over claim Facebook users in UK were exploited
I suppose it is technically true that we don't call commercial television "free television" but TV broadcasters don't really establish any terms and conditions. Informally, I think they say they are a free service in PR interactions from time to time.

Shouldn't it really be more significant when a company takes payment but continues to also monetize ads. I.e. not disclosing the money made from product placements in a movie in a ticket purchase is a specific fraud relating to a transaction with a measurable cost.

smorgusofborg··on Sunsetting Jobs and Developer Story
I don't really get their announcement. The company brand stuff they find worthwhile is to be in no way tied to actual open positions? This is a feature to help companies that aren't hiring make people feel dissatiafied with their own life?
smorgusofborg··on Bozkurt, B., [et al.] Myocarditis With Covid-19 mRNA Vaccines (2021)
Why would the level of reaction from tissue exposed to a higher than intended dose of a novel protein be the same as its reaction to a higher dose of a protein it has been primed to react to?
smorgusofborg··on Bozkurt, B., [et al.] Myocarditis With Covid-19 mRNA Vaccines (2021)
It looks likely that everyone who lives ten more years is going to encounter this virus at least once and there is a frequency of comorbidities first discovered at the morgue that needs to be considered by a "healthy" person.
smorgusofborg··on White Europe Is a Myth
I don't really get your first paragraph. Medieval people fought about religion and religion usually correlated to origin. I.e. the Sicilians integrated with the portion of Moors that converted.
smorgusofborg··on White Europe Is a Myth
It would be kind of crazy if visible ethnic diversity didn't drop consistently generation after generation after the Roman empire moved east, but especially between 1200 and 1700 given waves of xenophobic hate, evictions of the moors and paranoia that anyone with the potential for external connections, (such as connections with the newer hubs of international trade) was poisoning wells.
smorgusofborg··on New evidence suggests that Seattle’s soda tax is working well
You can't have it both ways, if stopping candy leads to cigarette money then cigarettes are healthy because anyone who smokes has less money for heroin.
smorgusofborg··on Deploying Elixir Book
I would assume there are also more than 70 pages of docs across these 6 cloud/SaaS options for any language that wouldn't be easier to attack as hopelessly obscure.
smorgusofborg··on Turn a Raspberry Pi into a Brain-Computer-Interface to Measure Biosignals
Looking at the photo of the circuit board I can't see any sign this is opto isolated from the RPI's power source. What safety precautions are being taken?
smorgusofborg··on Dev corrupts NPM libs 'colors' and 'faker', breaking thousands of apps
Parts of the Linux stack equivalent to colors and faker are carefully audited and reviewed by multiple people? That sounds to me like elevating them to important bits in a false equivalence.
smorgusofborg··on Norton 360 Now Comes with a Cryptominer
I think this is an example of the 3rd party crapware that is more frequent a reason for a user to needlessly replace hardware that would have functioned correctly, quickly and more securely with a vanilla install, but a vendor accepted payment to market some security theatre or other feature that is hard to remove. Of course the vendor is all to happy if you think you need a new computer.
