smoovb··on Silicon Valley, the new lobbying monster
>The Valley’s enthusiasm for Biden, however, was short-lived. The President quickly appointed three prominent tech skeptics—Gary Gensler, Lina Khan, and Jonathan Kanter—to oversee the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, and the antitrust division of the Department of Justice, respectively. Soon the government was suing or investigating Google, Apple, Amazon, Meta, Tesla, and dozens of other companies.

Gensler, Warren and Khan have been exceptionally anti-tech. Nice of this article to notice there is a growing number of techies putting their money where their mouth is in response.

smoovb··on Elon Musk fires Tesla's entire supercharger team
Thankfully great entrepreneurs are only emboldened by sentiment like this.
smoovb··on Tesla to lay off everyone working on Superchargers, new vehicles
He knows how to keep his companies exciting and in the news, thats for sure.
smoovb··on Tesla to lay off everyone working on Superchargers, new vehicles
There are a host of smart reasons for this, like moving to franchising or a deal with an oil/gas/infrastructure company more suited for low innovation work. NACS is a solved problem, its simple a roll out issue and likely not work Tesla needs to be doing anymore.
smoovb··on Tesla to lay off everyone working on Superchargers, new vehicles
Why has he done it? Some thoughts:

- NACS has become the open, industry standard

- The tech has been figured out, commoditized and not an area for innovation

- He made a deal with a gas station to take over deployment

- Version 4 Super Chargers are a single piece delivered on flatbed, lego pieces now

- Cost savings in outsourcing

- Moving to a franchise model

smoovb··on Ethereum has blobs. Where do we go from here?
My (non-crypto) company uses USDC daily on L2 Arbitrum for international settlement, and have seen the fees drop to a few cents per transaction with the release of blobs. We have replaced the need for wires/TransferWise/Revolut on several of our routes.
smoovb··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
Excessive. It's not hard to take away his ability to do harm again, he is not a threat to society. In fact, put him to work righting all his wrongs. This judge and sentence a waste of taxpayer money.
smoovb··on Window-swap – open a new window somewhere in the world
This really hit the mark during COVID. Now, less timely.
smoovb··on eSIM is altering how consumers interact with operators
Much of the eSIM dislike on this thread misses several points:

* eSIM for travel vs eSIM for home use are completely different use cases.

* US, Canada and other carrier from other countries severely hamper the experience by charging for QR codes, physical delivery, IMEI requirements and carrier locking.

* Most handsets can have multiple eSIMs installed (I have 10 with one active) giving you carrier flexibility not previously possible.

* With VoLTE or WiFi Calling your home number works like a VOIP number anywhere in the world. In this case you may only need a data only eSIM, where KYC requirements are reduced and options are plentiful.

smoovb··on eSIM is altering how consumers interact with operators
I have 10 eSIMs on my iOS (iPhone 12) device currently, with one active eSIM and one active pSIM.
smoovb··on eSIM is altering how consumers interact with operators
And the start of naming your 8 eSIMs meaningful descriptive identifiers.
smoovb··on eSIM is altering how consumers interact with operators
All depends on what problem you value. If you do any kind of international travel the value is clear. If you care about waste and manufacture of an unnecessary product the value is clear.
smoovb··on Crypto Exchange Backed by Citadel Securities, Fidelity, Schwab Starts Operations
Great! EDX will trade crypto without actually having any of it. What will they invent next, 2 day settlement times? Why do real time settlement when we can go back to the clearinghouse model which has been with us since the early days of stock brokering...

smoovb··on Binance commingled customer funds and company revenue, former insiders say
Binance US, separate entity, serves US customers. Binance from the article does not.
smoovb··on Binance commingled customer funds and company revenue, former insiders say
"Binance, commingled customer funds with company revenue in 2020 and 2021, in breach of U.S. financial rules"

Guess it is fortunate for them they are not a US company governed by U.S. financial rules.

Agree, the only things I support are issues that directly benefit me.
smoovb··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
Poor messaging amplified by speed of light communications (twitter) and fast online redemptions. We're in a new era of flash mob bank runs. Likely time for a rethink on regulations - like moving to daily mark-to-market of bank security holdings.
smoovb··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
Sorry, how is this irresponsible? Leaders that imagine and vocally describe a plausible negative outcome seems quite sensible.

Seems the equivalent of screaming fire in a crowded theater, when there is an actual fire.

smoovb··on Tesla tells investors it’s being investigated by the Justice Department
I spent a fair bit of mental anguish on whether to purchase FSD or not. Thankfully the FSD subscription was out and I reasoned that it could be turned on when valuable enough. The FOMO pricing of FSD seems unnecessary, in retrospect.
smoovb··on Did the Tesla Story Ever Make Sense?
> The question is: Where are the powerful network externalities in the electric vehicle business?

Isn't it batteries? Once you have rechargeable battery mass production you have transport, home, and industrial energy solutions.

>These days, Microsoft has a better reputation than it used to.. Krugman also reminds us how hated Microsoft was, yet still successfully sold software. Maybe Tesla need not worry much about reputation damage.

smoovb··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
A title change from "Elimination of Harmful Language" to "Considered Language Alternatives" would make this list more palatable.

smoovb··on Rising Tether Loans Add Risk to Stablecoin, Crypto World
1. With T-Bill rates up to 4%, Tether is now making more money from interest than ever before, in the ball park of $100m per month. More than a SoFi or Moneygram with a tenth of the employees.

2. Their customers are institutions, not you and me, and if the Tether can't pay out 1:1 to their customer (like a Binance) the institution will be the one with solvency issues.

3. The peg is a natural pressure release. In case of a USDT bank run, weak hands will "accept" less USD for their USDT without any involvement from Tether. After the FUD, peg can be restored by normal market forces. Bad for trust and reputation, but not a mortal wound for Tether, as it has dealt with many in the past.

smoovb··on Why Evernote failed to realize its potential (2021)
I was a paying user and they switched plans, removed me. Bloat, constant unwanted change killed it for me. I now use a mix of Notes, Joplin, Notion, Paper and Google Docs.
smoovb··on Stablecoin Mechanics 2: Tether-Celsius
All great US-centric points! If you're living in Venezuela, Turkey, Argentina, Russia, Poland or other country with anywhere from 15 to 167% inflation, you might just be happy to have access to USD via easy to get stablecoins.
