smm11··on Framework's first desktop is a strange–but unique–mini ITX gaming PC
I got a job some time back, at the interview they asked where I got tech news. I said ARS Technica, and they looked at me like I'd sprouted another head.

They fired me a few weeks in, but then went out of business.

smm11··on If it is worth keeping, save it in Markdown
WTF?

text.txt

Readable in everything, since forever.

smm11··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
"Are" soaring? Avian flu has been going on since 2022.

One of the reasons we are where we are is because many think this started last fall.

smm11··on 1972 Unix V2 "Beta" Resurrected
I worked at a place in love with their ERP system. Some there had been using it 30+ years, since it ran in DOS.

My Excel skills completely blow, and I hate Microsoft with a passion, but I created a shared spreadsheet one long Saturday afternoon that had more functionality than our $80K annual ERP system. Showed it to a few more open-minded employees, then moved it to my server, never to be shown again. Just wanted to prove when I said the ERP system was pointless, that I was right.

smm11··on Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo completes first ever sub-57 minute half marathon
No, that's something like 4:19 miles, or 64.9 400 meter runs, for nearly an hour.

smm11··on 41% of Employers Worldwide Say They'll Reduce Staff by 2030 Due to AI
By 2030? They'll be out of business by 2028 if they aren't mostly AI.
smm11··on The 1955 Le Mans disaster changed motorsport
Not related, but when Bell was broken up in the early-80s I had a grandmother who said the world was ending. Seems that break-up improved things, at least for a while.
smm11··on A quick look at OS/2's builtin virtualization
The OS/2 Warp commercials blew my mind in the mid-90s, and they never even once showed the system. I was a Mac person at the time, and would have been all over OS/2 if I'd had the chance. But I was in a very small town, this was the world with a pre-functional-WWW, and it was just impossible to find anything but System 7 and Win 3.1 at the time.

Then I saw a NeXT slab and it was all over.

smm11··on Install postmarketOS on Android phone and use Docker as a home server
I used a Samsung Galaxy, as in the first Samsung Galaxy phone, as a home server maybe 15 years ago. No Docker, or PostmarketOS needed.
smm11··on Is Chrome the New IE? (2023)
Chrome is controlled by Google.

The US government will be controlled by the owner of X, Tesla, and SpaceX.

smm11··on Nordic neighbours release new advice on surviving war
Putin is who our next president aspires to be. I'll just leave that there.
smm11··on M4 Mac mini's efficiency
Exactly as described. I had an 8/256 Mini, and the Beelink solved more than a few problems.
smm11··on M4 Mac mini's efficiency
I just sold an M1 Mini and grabbed a Beelink. It's wonderful being able to run whatever OS/distro I want on the Beelink, and it's plenty strong enough for whatever. I love this adoration for Apple, primarily for my investment accounts, but in a cloud world I have no idea why there's such a demand for the M4.
smm11··on When muscles work out, they help neurons to grow, a new study shows
Kettlebells are half that price at Walmart. They work just as well.
smm11··on Multiple new macOS sandbox escape vulnerabilities
Chromebooks, actually.
smm11··on The Weeds Are Winning
This. Not related, but it's my belief that gluten-intolerance is actually a glyphosate issue.
smm11··on Elwood Edwards, voice of AOL's 'you've got mail' alert, has died
I emailed a suggestion to, and received a response from Steve Jobs in the late-90s. Didn't think a thing about it, changed jobs a time or two, business I was at closed. Yeah.
smm11··on VisionOS 2.2 Beta Adds Wide and Ultrawide Modes to Mac Virtual Display
More excited about Meta Orion glasses myself, and I avoid Facebook like the plague.
smm11··on US Government memo shows Ethel Rosenberg was not a spy but executed her anyway
Who is around now who actually did worse? I can't think of the name.
smm11··on Apple's M4 Max chip is the fastest single-core performer in consumer computing
I'm reminded of the Intel dominance. Whatever happened?

smm11··on Plastic chemical phthalate causes DNA breakage, chromosome defects, study finds
Vintage clothing stores are a great resource to combat this. It's sad how expensive many are, but you can also try thrift stores for clothes.
smm11··on MacOS sometimes leaks traffic after system updates
I switch between OS X and Ubuntu a few times a year, and the only difference is that I have to restart Ubuntu far more often than OS X.

All I run is a browser, text editor and terminal, so functionally it doesn't matter one bit.

smm11··on T-Mobile, AT&T oppose unlocking rule, claim locked phones are good for users
I have a dual-SIM phone, maybe $250 at Best Buy.

Primary Mint SIM, secondary MobileX (Verizon) SIM.

Monthly cost $35.

smm11··on I Am Tired of AI
I was in the newspaper field a year or two before desktop publishing took off, then a few years into that evolution. Rooms full of people and Linotype/Compugraphic equipment were replaced by one Mac and a printer.

I shot film cameras for years, and we had a darkroom, darkroom staff, and a film/proofsheet/print workflow. One digital camera later and that was all gone.

Before me publications were produced with hot lead.

Get off my lawn.
