smlacy··on Why 12 notes in Western music?
Its the use of the musical concept of Fifths that's the key here: We just derive the notes from what sounds good, not what makes sense mathematically? I'm just using Python to mirror the author's analysis -- you can derive "12 notes" pretty much just by using your ear and listening to the Fifths.
smlacy··on Why 12 notes in Western music?
Another possible explanation, which I'm surprised the author didn't go through is the "Circle of Fifths" which basically says:

Since Fifths sound so great, why not just keep doing that? When we get to the next octave, then come back down. If we get to a place that's "pretty darn close" to another note, then stop. The Python explanation looks like:

  f = 440
  for i in range(13):
      print(i,f)
      f = f * 3/2
      if f > 880: f=f/2.0

  0 440
  1 660.0
  2 495.0
  3 742.5
  4 556.875
  5 835.3125
  6 626.484375
  7 469.86328125
  8 704.794921875
  9 528.59619140625
  10 792.894287109375
  11 594.6707153320312
  12 446.00303649902344
Note that after exactly 12 steps, we're back at 446 which is "pretty close" to 440. So, we take this set of notes, sort them, and just jigger it a little bit to get the 12 notes we know today.
smlacy··on Ask HN: DALL-E was trained on watermarked stock images?
Prompt Engineering can help a lot but yes, you're basically right: People are generating many, many images and sharing only the best ones with the fewest artifacts.

For simple prompts with little additional guidance, all the diffusion image generators I've seen/used will produce output about like what the author linked most of the time. There are always a few gems, and honing in via prompt engineering helps immensely.

smlacy··on Using A Very Old Machine
In totally the same boat!

My daily driver home machine is an i5-760 (Released in 2010!) with a GTX 1060, and it works GREAT. I play lots of RTS-like games in 4K via Steam (Stellaris, Civ, Timberborn, Factorio, Valheim, etc) and there's absolutely no problem whatsoever. The "pcmasterrace" mentality that makes you think nothing works without the latest & greatest CPUs & Graphics is just blatantly false.

I've always run Ubuntu on it as my daily driver, and I think that's part of my success. Windows machines of this age are seem to be more susceptible to long-term performance degradation.

As a comparison, I routinely use it side-by-side with much more recent machines (Intel 10th gens) provided by my workplace, and all the machines feel nearly identical in speed and performance to my 12-year old beater.

My only regret/hope is that my ancient motherboard doesn't seem to support more than 8G RAM, which is a bit annoying given how cheap memory is at this point.

I'm not sure what "Wait at location because there was no better train" means?

Are you massuming a 3h40m trip for a specific time-based appointment? I think the use case of this kind of train is more similar to a flight with one or more nights at destination, so that the specific arrival time is not that important.

Cute idea and great execution. The first track I tried [1] has no discernible "Beat" so it kinda just goes wild at its own tempo, a total mismatch for the music I was playing.

smlacy··on JetBrains Mono – the free and open-source typeface for developers
Once a (freely available) file is downloaded onto a computer that I own & control, they don't have any legal right to restrict what I do with those file(s), as long as I don't generate any derivative works. Using the font in a terminal or editor does not constitute a derivative work.

For example, I can use this as my terminal font on my Debian machine, and write code using it, but I can't post a screenshot of that terminal or code to Twitter.

smlacy··on JetBrains Mono – the free and open-source typeface for developers
SF Mono (https://developer.apple.com/fonts/) is also an amazing font, but generally left out of most online comparison tools due to licensing issues. But, it's freely available for personal use, and is certainly worth a look, and has been my preferred fixed width font for quite some time.

SF Mono works great in any system (not just Fruit) but you'll need to use a few tools to dig down to get the OTF's out of the DMG.

smlacy··on Ask HN: Are you spending more time on Twitter than HN?
Twitter started giving me that empty, robotic, "algorithmic feed" feeling a month or two ago, so I un-followed everyone and removed the app from my phone and logged out all sessions via the web.

I've mostly replaced my online reading/discovery with HN, since I now have zero social media, and by reading HN and a couple of big-name online newspapers, I don't feel that I'm "missing out" on online news (a common feeling after deleting all social media).

smlacy··on Lenovo tablet forced update shows un-dismissable, un-mutable, ad notifications
> Still, for a business with stricter security standards, it would be ideal to do a clean reimage of all new laptops regardless of vendor, and specifically add only the necessary drivers, etc.

This is what I've done with virtually every machine I've personally owned for oh... the last 20 years? Why is this not people's defacto way of setting up a new machine? It's obvious that preinstalls are full of bloatware and spyware. The only issue (primarily from the past) is that specialty hardware may not work without vendor-provided drivers. That's largely no longer true, especially for the big-name brands like Lenovo, Dell, Acer, ec.
