smhinsey··on Tyranny of the Tools
I used to work at a company that absolutely loved to do a variation on your first point. When faced with a multiple choice question, the answer would end up being "all of the above," but framed in such a way that "oh, we're merely keeping our options open." When that story comes up for implementation, what do you know but apparently MajorCustomer has heard all about how we're offering support for every computer ever made by human hands and is thrilled! They want to know when they can expect a demo!

Agile can also be a great way to uncover people who think they are "separate but more equal" too, when they decide that the concept of a sprint whose content is mutually agreed upon and doesn't change mid-stream is just a quaint little detail that doesn't apply to Important People.

Maybe I'm just a little bit bitter.

smhinsey··on Jeff Bezos Owns the Web in More Ways Than You Think
You can get an idea of this with their MP3 Cloud Player for Android. I keep a minimum of music on it for gaps in coverage and things I listen to very frequently, but it easily shifts to "cloud mode" and streams well on 4g/wifi.
smhinsey··on Congress: Trading stock on inside information?
We had a government of laws, not of men. Now we have a government of men and honest graft.
smhinsey··on Apple and the Kindle
In an even nicer twist, when I upgraded to the latest model from my original Kindle, the new one showed up with all of my books already synced so I could literally just open the package, turn it on, and pick up right where I'd left off with the old one. This is pretty small and probably caused more by coincidence based on how the system works than actual intent but it impressed me a lot. I've been a big Kindle user since it came out though.

(FWIW, I use mine to buy books that I previously would've got in paperback form, allowing me to slowly begin the process of rebuilding my physical library by pruning out paperbacks and things I don't care much about in favor of high quality hardbacks.)

smhinsey··on Using Node.js in an ASP.NET MVC application with iisnode
I actually already have a beta account and have checked it out. It looks promising, but this is one of those political situations. I think AppHarbor will probably end up replacing AWS as our second platform though.
smhinsey··on Using Node.js in an ASP.NET MVC application with iisnode
This is really interesting. I'm just getting started on a project with a lot of web front end that's targeted at Azure. I had been planning on using ASP.NET MVC with Razor, but I think node makes a lot more sense.
smhinsey··on Ask HN: As a startup CEO, if your HR is screwing up, do you want to know?
Why wouldn't you want to know?
smhinsey··on Bank of America to charge monthly fee to debit card users
I don't think it's true of all of their products, such as insurance, but I believe the general public can sign up for USAA banking. This was true a few years ago when I was looking for a new bank, but I ended up going elsewhere for unrelated reasons.
smhinsey··on WinRT demystified
This is a really interesting question. I did some quick skimming over the docs there and even where there is conceptual overlap, the BCL wins in terms of feature breadth. It would be challenging to replace it, I think.

My suspicion is that .NET 5 will merge the two.

smhinsey··on Obama's job aid plan - $10,000 to $13,000 in assistance for entrepreneurship
Yeah, what are they doing to do, start some company focused on providing good commenting systems on websites?

The fact that that comment appeared on a Disqus comment stream is icing on the cake.

smhinsey··on [dead]
Yeah, that's an obvious one. Not sure how I overlooked that. Thanks.
smhinsey··on [dead]
Does anyone know by what metric it will be 1,000 faster? It seems like a technique for having massive numbers of cores in parallel, but I'm not sure how the adhesive would address any specific improvements to the cores themselves.

That said, even if it's just a way to get 1,000-core CPUs or whatever, it sounds like a remarkable breakthrough.

smhinsey··on Delivering fast boot times in Windows 8
This made me wonder if they have addressed the main issue behind scenarios like that, which, in my experience, is the application of GPOs. I haven't actually had a win7 machine on a domain so I don't know, but I sure do have similar memories of "applying security policy" taking forever in XP.
smhinsey··on The Tricks Investors Use Against Founders
How do you find the right lawyer to vet your agreements, as a founder, to make sure something like this doesn't happen to you? Is a lawyer even the right person to look for?
smhinsey··on Erik Meijer: The World According to LINQ
Wow, that is probably going to help a lot, thanks. I've been using VS since the 90s and I still feel like I don't know half of what it can do.

I'm not sure how to fix this, but I am pretty sure the increasing tendency to release documentation as videos is not the answer.

smhinsey··on Erik Meijer: The World According to LINQ
Syntactically LINQ is a breath of fresh air, but it's totally the opposite when it comes to debugging. Right now the experience of debugging a nested loop (which typically could be converted to some form of LINQ) is way better than if you look at the equivalent LINQ.

It's totally possible I am missing some magical IDE feature, but if you want to do something like take a look at the 4th item in some intermediary part of a LINQ query, you're out of luck unless you can either break it up into smaller units of syntax or convert it to a loop.

smhinsey··on Book on Third-Party JavaScript from engineers at Disqus (YC 07)
This is interesting. When I worked at a high traffic news site, we had what seemed like an unending stream of low-level crises related to 3rd party scripts of various sorts and it always blew me away, not being someone who focused on the front end, that there wasn't a more formalized methodology for dealing with them.
smhinsey··on Sun-java6 packages removed soon from Debian/Ubuntu (and all other linux distros)
You might be thinking of IntelliJ. It only works on the sun-java6 packages. Or at least that was the case last time I set it up.
smhinsey··on Notch's Livestream for Ludum Dare 21
Is there no voice over on this one?
smhinsey··on Notch's Livestream for Ludum Dare 21
Ah, that makes sense. Too bad that I could really only see what was going on in HD mode.
smhinsey··on Notch's Livestream for Ludum Dare 21
He just stopped the stream due to the cost. I'd be very curious to know what the actual numbers were.
smhinsey··on Notch's Livestream for Ludum Dare 21
It's basically edit and continue in debug mode.
smhinsey··on Death to the 'noreply' mailbox
I can't recall which service, it's right on the tip of my tongue, but I've seen it done before that such a reply would end up being routed to the correct user. In the simplest case you get "X Commented on your Post!" sent from your service's account but with reply-to set to X's address. If you wanted to obscure X's address, you could process replies to your service's address and route them accordingly.
smhinsey··on The Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader is live
I would love to see this synchronize with the "collections" feature on the DX (not sure if all models have it). Otherwise, this is excellent.
smhinsey··on Jonathan's Card revealed as viral marketing campaign
Metafilter has a long and storied history of uncovering these sorts of things, so it's not a total surprise to me that they were on this pretty quickly, although I admit I skipped that post.
smhinsey··on 2011 Rubyist’s guide to a Mac OS X development environment
Does anyone know of a site that collects these sorts of stories? I was recently looking to set up an environment to start experimenting with a new language and I have the ability to do it on ubuntu, os x, or windows 7, but I had trouble finding advice on the tradeoffs of them, beyond the stereotypical "use linux!" type stuff.
smhinsey··on Getting Bin Laden: What happened that night in Abbottabad
You know, as much as I like his other books, and the genre in general, I never made it that far into Cryptonomicon.
smhinsey··on Getting Bin Laden: What happened that night in Abbottabad
The first known officially sanctioned assassination by the United States of an enemy leader was when Roosevelt authorized[1] the Navy to intercept the airplane carrying IJN Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto[2] on an inspection tour of installations in the Solomon Islands. This was in April of 1943.

smhinsey··on The future Firefox UI
I really hope this new tab layout doesn't mean Tree Style Tabs is out of the picture.
smhinsey··on Plot thickens in Airbnb vacation rental horror story
I am saying "I don't think this way, but I believe this is why others do." You can discuss an idea without supporting it.
