The 8.43:1 ratio of LoC to soft drinks/coffee consumed made me laugh.
slyn··on Will the Adult Industry Drive Android Adoption?
Not to mention that the article skips over a couple important points.

Granted, the iPhone will never see any sophisticated downloadable porn-tagging apps like described in this article, it still has the internet at its disposal. If just looking at pictures of naked chicks on your phone in public places is enough for you to get your kicks, then I don't really see any phone manufacturer having any advantage greater than just the speed, stability, and ease of use of each of their respective mobile browsers (and they nearly all use Webkit so speed for that is pretty dead even).

If moving pictures are more your thing, then any phone that can display flash will ultimately have the iPhone beat, but not without a fight. Little known fact that the iPhone can stream h.264 from any site, not just YouTube. So any website that serves up h.264 through flash can make a mobile site using the same videos without the flash player. The only site I know of that does this is m.pornhub(dot)com (obviously very NSFW so no accidental clicking), but yes, it exists.

slyn··on Warcraft's Back End: 10 Data Centers, 75,000 Cores
Yes, they recently required that all accounts switch over to Battle.net (the cutoff date was sometime early november, after a months notice).

The public reasoning about it is so users can use the same email/password combination for WoW as well as the other upcoming Blizzard games like Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, and whatever their new IP next-gen MMO ends up becoming. The private reasons one can only guess, but I would assume at least that they can do stat tracking much easier with the new system.

slyn··on Time-lapse map of unemployment rates by U.S. county during recession
I don't think the unemployment divide has much to do with technology.

Imagine that the economy of every country in the world is a lake. The depth of the hole in which the water resides is roughly proportional to the population of a country, and the amount of water inside the hole is roughly proportional to the average persons quality of life in that country.

America has a relatively high water mark compared to the rest of the world. When America opened trade with China, we essentially dug a hole between our lake and their lake. Because China's lake has such a low water mark, water from our lake (jobs basically) will flow to their lake until their lake and our lake are roughly at equilibrium. Same goes for India and the rest of the world we trade with globally. The lowest water (lowest paying, lowest education req jobs) flows over first, which is why lots of the manufacturing and call center type jobs went overseas first. The current downturn was likely caused by things not related to this flow, but as the recession makes its way through the economy it increases the flow as companies look for ways to cut costs.

I would further the analogy but I don't really have time. End result is: More education = less likely to lose your job. What sector of the economy you are in has little to do with your actual job security.

slyn··on Ask HN: Who wants to do this experiment with me ?
Slashdot offers this as an option for high karma users also, which I think makes sense. If your site benefits from a small subset power-users, giving them perks to keep those users around and engaged will make the entire site better.

slyn··on Logo Design from Start to Finish
"Of course, I'm sure you'll find people fiercely arguing either of the products that have been competing for ages now, so trying to come up with a rubric based on your taste preference is pretty useless."

The only people still arguing are those who have not experienced the cola-nirvana that is RC cola. Interestingly enough even RC had it's own can label redesign recently, getting rid of its classy old-school look for a more modern one. The armchair designer in me preferred the old one, it seemed to fit the brand name better.

I remember back when it first hit me how perfect the logo design for the Nike swoosh was, it blew my mind. Ever since then I've tried to pay more attention to what companies are trying to portray through the images, fonts, and colors they use in their advertising and logo's.

slyn··on Mac Mini Pays for Itself After 2 Years
http://www.goodcleantech.com/2009/03/its_official_apple_mac_...

"The mini uses only 15W while idling in our tests, and a low 34W while running the CineBench benchmark test. This is the second lowest active score, after the 18W observed on the Asus Eee Box nettop."

Moral of the story: Don't judge power consumption by power supply capacity.

slyn··on Apple releases new 27″ LED Cinema Display – comes with a free Mac
The benefit of an LED display goes beyond just the environmental benefit. LED backlights don't have a warmup time like CFL backlights, and they provide a more uniform brightness level across the panel. The panel will also be cheaper to run over the lifetime of the device because of its energy savings (lower TCO, to borrow a term from the server community).

The fact that they are mercury free is just one of many reasons why LED backlights are considered a marketing point.

slyn··on Apple Announces Major Consumer PC Upgrades
I would love to see some of these IPS panels in the Macbook Pro's.

Currently the only things differentiating between the stock Macbook and the 13" MBP is build quality (unibody polycarbonate vs unibody aluminum), Memory Cap (4gb max vs 8gb max), default HDD size (the MBP is actually smaller), and the Pro has Firewire and a SD slot.

Granted the price difference between the MB and the 13" MBP is only $200, but I think the perfect way to distinguish between the two is IPS. Seeing this manifest itself in the iMacs is really unexpected to me given the industry trend as a whole to keep displays as cheap as possible (I was previously just hoping for a simple bump to 1680x1050 on the 15" MBP, which is what I own and will likely buy again in the future), but this gives me hope that better panel technology in the laptops is actually a potential option.

If you use OS X, cmd+click.

Cmd+click even works on some things that middle click doesn't, for example middle clicking on the home, back/forward, or top sites buttons in Safari will do nothing at all, but cmd+clicking will properly open your home page, previous page, or top sites page in a new tab.

slyn··on Apple's Most Profitable Quarter Ever
"[2] Y Combinator is (we hope) visited mostly by hackers. The proportions of OSes are: Windows 66.4%, Macintosh 18.8%, Linux 11.4%, and FreeBSD 1.5%. The Mac number is a big change from what it would have been five years ago."

It would be interesting to see a comparison between the "five years ago" 2000 stats, these 2005 stats, and the current 2009 stats.

slyn··on Ask HN: Whom do you admire most?
David Chappelle

I hate that he has faded so much from the public eye. If you've never seen Dave Chappelle's Block Party get it and watch it, whether you enjoy hip-hop or not. If you've seen that and are otherwise interested his Inside the Actors Studio interview is pretty solid too.

He is basically the type of role model I wish I could be someday.

Even more surprising to me was this:

"Brack went on to talk about the customer support staff, a group with 2,056 game masters, 340 billing managers, and a host of other background staffers."

Programming, art and design, and cinematics adds up to maybe ~250 people. Supporting and monetizing what they make requires about 10x the manpower. Is that normal among all mega-corporations/projects, or is that something unique to MMO staffings?

slyn··on Blu-Ray Still Blows
I've begun wondering recently if we will end up going full circle and ending up with cartridges again as part of whatever next-gen or next-next-gen gaming consoles, this time based solely on generic flash memory. The cost of flash would have to start going down even more drastically than it already is to ever come close to matching the manufacturing cost of a DVD or even a Blu Ray disk, but I would think there would be a point where the value/$ would make it worth it to the consumer. Faster loading times, more durable games (ie no disk scratch errors), no real space limit on the games, extra room for game specific DLC, and I'm sure other advantages that I can't think of now that would be cool.

Street Fighter 2 super dooper HD remix might only need 5-10 gigs worth of memory, so they just throw in one 16 gig module (or two 8 / four 4 gig modules for data striping and faster loading times) and ship it. Metal Gear Solid 7 and its over 9000 hours of CGI might need 200+ gigs, so they just throw in as much flash memory as they can and go to town with their high res textures and lossless a/v.

Lets say Rock Band 5 ships with 80 songs at approximately a half gig a song, as well as 20 gigs of everything else, for a 60 gig total footprint. They then could ship the game on a 120 gig flash cartridge, mark half of it writable to the console, and boom. Now instead of having to carry around your xbox hard drive when visiting friends for RB parties, you just take the cartridge and it has the DLC on it.

slyn··on Did Texas execute an innocent man?
The death penalty is far to permanent of a punishment to be wielded by organizations with such high false positive rates. We wouldn't put up with it with an anti-virus program or a SMART-esque hardware monitoring program, why do we put up with it when the price is not a few easily replicated digital files or some computer hardware, but rather an innocent persons _life_.

Capital punishment in it's current form is not a deterrence to crime, it doesn't fix the problems caused by the crimes it is punishing for (it doesn't bring back the murdered, etc), it's more expensive for the state (and therefore taxpayers) than life without parole, and innocents have died at the hands of overzealous police, judges, politicians, and public opinion. So the question then becomes, why do it?
