slvv··on There's More to Life Than Being an Entrepreneur
Probably a better title would be "It's okay to be an employee, too."
slvv··on Excellence R Us: University Research and the Fetishisation of Excellence
This sounds similar to feedback I just got on my dissertation's conclusion section. They told me to rewrite it, noting that it should be different, but they weren't sure how. Asked for more detail, they said, "Make it punchier."
slvv··on A plagiarism scandal is unfolding in the crossword puzzle world
Because plagiarism is stealing ideas or words that someone worked hard to create. It's dishonest, among other things. Also, if you're interested in why we quote and cite sources, I recommend reading Anthony Grafton's history of the footnote!

You can totally repeat excellent wording verbatim! It's just that you have to add quotation marks and cite your source.
slvv··on Watch live illustrators and artists on Sywork (YC S15)
SUCH a great idea. Is the platform also open to broader art and craft forms (beyond traditional "art") - say quiltmakers or knitters/other fiber artists?
slvv··on TeaBOT (YC S15) Makes Customized Cups of Tea with the Touch of a Button
Canadian west coast! Vancouver & Victoria.
slvv··on TeaBOT (YC S15) Makes Customized Cups of Tea with the Touch of a Button
Yes, I do carry a travel mug - specifically one with a removable filter for loose tea. (I actually also have a model where the internal loose-tea-holding-pod can be retracted from the water with a little lever! I think that one's made by Aladdin.)

The university campus where I work, and the city I live in, are both extremely pro-reusable cup, and most places give you a small discount when you use one too.

(ETA Ugh it looks like this thread got killed, annoying.)

slvv··on TeaBOT (YC S15) Makes Customized Cups of Tea with the Touch of a Button
I'm a big tea drinker and would love to see more high quality loose teas available for grab & go. However, I would not be as likely to use TeaBOT if I couldn't use my own reusable cup. Do you have any plans to produce and/or market reusable cups to work with the machine, with the (seemingly) popular filter lid?

(I'd also rather be able to control the steeping time, but I get that that's hard to manage in a to go situation.)

slvv··on Ask HN: Why are we hiding feminism threads now?
I have noticed this too, find it deeply frustrating, and concede that it's a major reason why I find myself feeling less welcome here and less interested in being part of the HN community.
slvv··on Sam Altman, President of Y Combinator. Hackathon Hackers AMA (responses)
The answer about the McLaren is my favourite of the bunch.
slvv··on Rediscovering Books in a Digital World
I think the point about higher education being just a means to an end these days is spot on. The product plug at the end is not especially well-integrated into the otherwise interesting and reflective article, though.
slvv··on Water Fluoridation May Not Prevent Cavities, Scientific Review Shows
I recently learned (via expensive vet visits) that some cats do need to have their teeth brushed daily, or else they risk decay and tooth loss. It's not just vet bs!
slvv··on Ask HN: “Women Who Go” – Has tech diversity gone too far?
Are you asking whether the existence of a group for people who identify as female and are interested in Go is evidence that "tech diversity has gone too far"?

I think the answer is no.

slvv··on TED turns away mother and her baby at conference for women
Providing childcare on site would not affect the conference experience of others.
slvv··on Salt Lake City to Build the First Protected Intersection for Bicycling in the US
This is so awesome. Protected lanes and intersections would make me go out and buy a bike tomorrow.
slvv··on Be Kind
YES - thank you for pointing out the negative use of soccer mom. Unpaid caring and emotional work matters!
slvv··on Be Kind
"If you're fighting for your living, its not a luxury most of us can have. Sadly, this often justifies hostility, but I think there's a sane middle-ground here, but curt statements like "be kind" just seems so classist and off-putting to me."

I've consistently found that (in particular when treated with kindness and respect) poorer people respond with kindness in much greater measure than wealthy people. Like the author said, kindness isn't the same as niceness.

slvv··on Be Kind
"Being kind is fundamentally about taking responsibility for your impact on the people around you. It requires you be mindful of their feelings and considerate of the way your presence affects them."

I think this advice is so apt and so needed. There's a perception that to be effective or powerful, one must also be harsh, stern, a little bit mean. That stems from a misunderstanding of what kindness is. Hopefully people will heed his advice!

This kind of activity tracking and productivity management is so helpful for students at a variety of levels. I wish these skills were clearly and intentionally taught either in high school or in early university! Even if everyone's goals and patterns are different, figuring out what works best is a HUGE asset. Your observations about your ability to estimate are especially interesting!
slvv··on A Response to “What's the Point of a Professor?”

slvv··on What's the Point of a Professor?
This is so interesting, and especially frustrating (for both instructors and students) because really, most of the time only tenured faculty have the luxury of pushing back against the norm to really engage with students more outside of class and go beyond just being graders.
slvv··on Show HN: Commune, simply track who owes what in a shared home
Exactly - a demo home is what I'm looking for. :)
slvv··on Show HN: Commune, simply track who owes what in a shared home
I wish there was a way to see what it does and what everything looks like without signing up/adding a username and everything.

slvv··on Tea with strangers
Thanks for mentioning this! I definitely thought it was held in people's homes which was a big turnoff. Helpful clarification!
slvv··on A Field Guide to the American Sandwich
Interesting to see how many of these sandwiches I (a Canadian) have absolutely no experience with, and which ones are super familiar. (Anecdotally: most of the sliced bread ones are familiar, a lot of the hard & soft roll ones are new.) Cool!
slvv··on Ask HN: Why are HN topics about sexism so controversial?
Understood, and I agree that often there isn't very much productive happening by the end. Hopefully that will eventually change.
slvv··on Ask HN: Why are HN topics about sexism so controversial?
Thanks to the OP for asking; I hope there will be a real conversation about this. I've been noticing that often posts about sexism or feminism start to get some traction and then inexplicably disappear or are nuked, and it's super frustrating. How can we have discussion if posts that might encourage it just disappear?
