slugiscool99··on Launch HN: Kenobi (YC W22) – Personalize your website for every visitor
Everyone worried about privacy - not sure if they realize everyone is already collecting this type of information anyway?

I think this is cool and probably the future of B2B websites. My holdup would be, if the buyer enters their company and the copy just changes into what we think they want, are they going to lose trust that the copy is a true representation of our focus? Maybe it's a framing problem, lots of websites have "solutions" sections for different industries. Potentially could be cool to have a "how we can specifically help {your company}" with an exact use case outline.

Needs some UI work but this is a really great idea. Hope it gains traction
slugiscool99··on Launch HN: Pier (YC W23) – Stripe for Credit
Congrats guys! Super excited for this
slugiscool99··on Sequoia is splitting into three VC firms
Think this will make it easier for them to invest in strategically important technologies (like AI) in adversarial countries (China) without getting pushback like they have been
slugiscool99··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
This is so true. When I was a kid I could have gotten my parents to pay $5 / mo for me to explore my creativity. $200 not so much. I think this pricing is actually a really good thing for consumers.
slugiscool99··on Lerp
Scrolling lerp is the easiest way to ruin your website

They are still so tasteless it's insane
slugiscool99··on We ran a phone check at a Y Combinator event in SF
That experiment seems like an incredible use of time for so many reasons

so true - way more to learn from failures than successes
slugiscool99··on GitHub Desktop 3.2: Preview your pull request
The worse thing to happen to GH? Really?

Using git on the command line can be hard to learn and unintuitive for people - the desktop client makes things easier and that's a good thing (kind of like how the GUI made computers accessible to more people and ended up benefiting everyone in software...)

slugiscool99··on More than half of YC startups don't have a dot com
yeah .com's aren't going anywhere. they're just expensive now
slugiscool99··on Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
This makes so much sense
slugiscool99··on Web Push for Web Apps on iOS and iPadOS
Kudos to Apple for doing this. It's honestly very cool of them
slugiscool99··on WTF with high school questions?
This type of thing is great for people who hire or run companies - the more other organizations focus on meaningless things the more great people are available if you can find them!
slugiscool99··on GitHub Copilot investigation
Maybe the software engineers are worried they're being made redundant, but it is super fair for them to not allow their own work to make them redundant without permission
slugiscool99··on Ask HN: So you moved off Heroku, where did you go?
Vercel has been awesome for us - they've solved all these little pain points that really add up. Definitely a great starter service like what Heroku was. Also free for individuals.
slugiscool99··on Show HN: EthicalAds – Privacy-first ad network for developers
$2 cpm (https://www.ethicalads.io/publishers/faq/#how-much-will-i-ma...) is not higher than adsense, especially for a high value audience like US developers. We were seeing ~$5-$8 cpms on adsense for a much less affluent demographic on our site.

Totally support this and am rooting for alternative ad networks - especially ones like this. However I think it's fair to acknowledge that without tracking it's inevitable that you'll have less value to provide to advertisers. We can't have our cake and eat it too.

slugiscool99··on Wikipedia Recent Changes Map
It's pretty crazy how much of these edits are low quality, false, or just vandalism. Very impressive how the organization has been able to maintain such high quality information despite the general public.
slugiscool99··on TIFU by using Stripe as a payment processor for my small business
Customers shouldn't have to bother random employees to get support on critical issues. In general I think Stripe does a pretty good job with support compared to other big tech firms - the inability to reach humans is problem endemic throughout the industry.

It's a shame because a good customer support interaction can create a serious evangelist (hard to quantify but extremely valuable). Maybe Stripe knows this because they put a lot of effort into appeasing the HN community (many developers/entrepreneurs who make processor purchasing decisions). I wish they'd apply this attitude to all their customers.

slugiscool99··on I regret my website redesign
I've never had an experience with an agency that was better than hiring individuals. You end up paying a 20% markup + dealing with organizational headaches in exchange for skipping the pain of finding and vetting individuals with the right skillsets.

The initial shortcut ends up creating way more problems down the road.

slugiscool99··on Stripe Financial Connections
How much longer are we just going to keep eating up whatever the Stripe PR machine churns out? They did a great job with payments but a lot of their auxiliary products are just worse versions of other businesses.
slugiscool99··on Sony to buy video game maker Bungie in $3.6B deal
Sure, but game devs use tools like unreal engine the development time of which shouldn't be factored into the human hours calculation
slugiscool99··on Show HN: I made a Chrome extension that can automate any website
Really great job with this. Definitely fills a need
slugiscool99··on Show HN: Time travel debugger for web development
This is brilliant!
slugiscool99··on The red warning light on Richard Branson’s space flight
Apparently Edison was much more of a businessman than his legacy suggests - which was intentional on his part. Similar to Bill Gates, they both started as engineers but made their money organizing people.

slugiscool99··on Reddit raises $410M in new funding
The only information I could find claims that about 22% of reddit is NSFW. They calculated the percentage of NSFW subreddits with >100k subscribers. [1]

That's far from a perfect way to measure this, but it's around the statistic that 30% of the internet is porn. My intuition tells me Reddit probably reflects the internet as a whole pretty well.

What's going on with .icu domains? Any idea on why they've been so prone to spam?

I don't think I'll give up the macbook trackpad for anything. It's probably more important to my quality of life than the blue imessage bubbles.
