slobotron··on STFU
IMO, in person it's much nicer on the ears than the old single-tone beep that they used to have. It's less jarring and easier to locate where the noise is coming from, ye olde beep seemed to come from everywhere at once.

Amazfit watch gives a "score" that can be seen on device screen, in addition to the total hours and and breakdown per awake / REM / deep / light time.

Better translated as "Professor Fortran's Encyclopedia"?
slobotron··on How bad is QWERTY, really? A review of the literature, such as it is
Highly recommend you look into keyboards that have "Enter" and "Backspace" reachable by thumb/index fingers. I've been dailying a TECK for nearly a decade, and it's helped immensely with RSI.

Their new Clevo keyboard is a bit different, so can't vouch for it, but my SO likes it so far as first foray into ergo keyboards: https://trulyergonomic.com/

Spinalis looks to be similar idea, available in Canada. I had a lot of lower back pain that went away shortly after I started using it.

slobotron··on Electron vs. Qt for a new open-source project? Looking for advice
Last time I used Qt, it had classes to abstract hardware.

Stuff like QSerialPort worked fine across platforms for my usage. YMMV

slobotron··on A top-grossing scam on the App Store
Kind of funny that we trust Google's index of the whole www to take us to manufacturer's legitimate website, but don't trust Apple's own search of their curated store.
slobotron··on New England Almost Seceded over the War of 1812 (2012)
From Wikipedia you linked:

> There are recurring tales of sailors being pressed after a shilling was slipped into their drink, leading to glass-bottomed tankards. However, this is likely to be a myth, for the Navy could press by force, rendering deception unnecessary.

slobotron··on Extracting the list of O'Reilly Animals
Article comments on this nearly immediately:

> even if “animals” is a bit of a loose term that encompasses “Catholic Priests” (Ethics of Big Data) or “Soldiers or rangers, with rifles” (SELinux).

slobotron··on 98.css – design system for building faithful recreations of Windows 98 UIs
Certainly evokes a lot of nostalgia. The tactile feel of 3D buttons can be mesmerizing at times, a lot of experience has been lost in the race to flat, in addition to lowered affordability of modern UIs.

One bug: Firefox on Linux introduces an extra dotted rectangle on focused buttons (so they end up with two oddly overlapping focus indicators)

One could argue that if you are about to majorly break back compat, that you should just rename your project. Even calling it `foo2` is better than pretending it's `foo 2.0`. It may slow adoption of your new work, but at least it's staying honest.

Instead of "ad hoc", think of it as a multi-paradigm language.

From that viewpoint, I think there is a fair bit of beauty in being able to pick and choose your approach based on the problem at hand without worrying if that is an idiomatic choice dictated by language designers. P6 goes to great lengths to give you all the expressiveness you could hope for, regardless if you are doing functional, OOP, or dealing with concurrency etc...

Navigation of the select box would be improved if "/r/" prefix was stripped from every item. Ex, I clicked on select box and start typing "cable" expecting for it to navigate to one of those entries, but it just hung on the first item. Alternatively, can use some fancy select component with search function, like Chosen etc.
slobotron··on Apple’s repair kill switch hasn’t been activated yet
iPhones of similar vintage* (1, 3G, 3GS) looked somewhat similar IMO.

(* Technically I guess it's the iPhone 4 that came out same year as Defy, but arguably close enough)
