sleepytimetea··on Fentanyl-tainted pills now found in Mexican pharmacies from coast to coast
"Tested positive for" is a vague term - were they in effectively dangerous concentrations (fentanyl) or just trace quantities because of contamination of the molds in the small scale operation in a warehouse somewhere ?
sleepytimetea··on The Reddit blackout has left Google barren and full of holes
I search for reviews of DIY tools and all Google shows me are review sites that are just thinly veiled affiliate link farms. I even read a post somewhere about a guy boasting he has SEO optimized his review sites to show up at the top of google searches and he makes a bundle on all the Amazon affiliate links people follow.

For me, the solution is not Reddit but Youtube - luckily, Google can now link you directly to the point in the video that matters otherwise videos are not random searchable, and I haven't seen all videos have text transcripts you can search through.

sleepytimetea··on Grail wrongly told hundreds of people they might have cancer
Did you make it ? :-)
sleepytimetea··on California’s cliffs are crumbling as climate change reshapes the coast
Paywalled
sleepytimetea··on Firefox displayed a pop-up ad for Mozilla VPN over an unrelated page
Apparently the "fix" is to fix the bug in the idle time calculation.

They marked it Resolved but the popup will still happen after 20 mins of idle time after the fix, if I read the Bug details correctly.

sleepytimetea··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
I think you make the most valid point... with no trust in the stability of the job after relocation, why would people uproot their lives.
sleepytimetea··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
I have observed a more insidious problem - the Youtubers that used to be genuine and down to earth are now themselves compromised by being sent products to give their honest opinion. The other day I was watching a video about this nice couple who wanted to start their bulldozer that was frozen in the forest and suddenly they pull out this "powerbank 1300" (name deliberately changed) and started a sales spiel ! About how they have all these gopros and iphones and look how many ports this thing has, and how it can charge the dead dozer battery blah blah.

Matthias Wandel today released a video about a Ecobank 1300 - I am shocked at how the content creators themselves have become a poisoned well !

These 1300WH banks are waaay overpriced for the amount it would cost to buy the individual 18650 cells (probably $100 worth of cells being sold for $999), so these content creators are shills and sellouts to these marketing tactics.

sleepytimetea··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I had a 2008 Lexus RX with a CD changer and a cassette player in the dash. Old people is their primary target audience.
sleepytimetea··on Netflix loses 1M users in Spain over password policing

Our malicious website filters prevent access to this domain - is it legit ?
sleepytimetea··on Why the New Arduino Uno R4 Will Be a Game-Changer for Makers
"The WiFi version will be equipped with an Espressif S3 Wi-Fi module, " - essentially, what they are calling the Wifi module is also an ESP32-S3 with dual xtensa cores running at 240 Mhz !

For a MCU running at 48Mhz - the "wifi module" is a dual core 240Mhz SOC :-). What a wild world we live in !

When is LARES-1 rentry expected ? 1500 km orbit shouldn't be very long lived, right ?
sleepytimetea··on I fixed a parasitic drain on my car in 408 days
I got a new(used) car which has power closing doors - you just bring them close to the car and the motors gently pull them closed. Luxury feature because you never slam or even shut the doors anymore, they are closed soundlessly. I didn't know I wanted the feature till I got this car...now I wish all cars had this. I bet I won't feel the same when I have to pay a thousand dollars to get a single motor replaced.
sleepytimetea··on Tell HN: Gitlab just downgraded my premium subscription without warning
Their reply would probably be something like

"We have investigated the issue and found that you did not respond to our email of March 24th where we warned users that the Docker Teams plan will be discontinued. Please check your Spam folder. Hence, the automated downgrade was initiated. If you wish to resubscribe to the premium features again, please contact our support team on AOL Messenger between the hours of 1 AM and 7 AM PST. Thank you for your understanding".

sleepytimetea··on We apologize. We did a terrible job announcing the end of Docker Free Teams
Exactly ! I remember the original email mentioned deletion and now they say "we never said that".

Time to get rid of Docker in our world.

sleepytimetea··on Google discontinues Google Glass for enterprise
Unsavory behaviors with Google Glasses ?
sleepytimetea··on KiCad 7.0
They listed it at the very end of the Release Notes but its a killer feature - I have been struggling with the random packing of components onto the PCB when the first export to PCB is done. It almost made me delete most of the schematic and then incrementally add to schematic and then make it add to PCB but its such a pain.

This new Pack and Move feature seems like a life-saver, since we can use it anytime to add components to a selection with Shift-select and then that will pull it into the other desired grouping area on the PCB.

sleepytimetea··on KiCad 7.0
Kicad is excellent - I found 6.0 to be much improved and more useable than the version I had previously. I just downloaded 7.0 and it already is a LOT snappier and happier with loading the symbol libraries. I need to check if there have been any improvements in the auto-router integrations - it was pretty rough the last time I tried it out.
sleepytimetea··on I bought a CO2 monitor and it broke me
Thank you...$250 sounds excessive. I can hook up an OLED screen and ESP32 to the senseair and get the same ?

I could even send levels to my home IOT InfluxDB for historical charting.

sleepytimetea··on My experience donating stem cells
The reason for the repeated pregnancy tests was because those drugs are undoubtedly going to cause birth defects... cannot give anything to pregnant (or who may become pregnant) women except for legacy drugs that have been proven safe decades ago.
sleepytimetea··on Ask HN: Does anybody use the HN hide button?
Yes I use it all the time ! Since the feed is not really customizable, it is my only way to hide things I don't care about. I know it is not a downvote but mentally it makes me feel better to hide all Twitter and NYT links - I hit the hide button almost instinctively now.
sleepytimetea··on Real ID was a real mistake and Congress should scrap it at last
Date moved to May 2025.
sleepytimetea··on BorgBackup: Deduplicating archiver with compression and encryption
Python source code ? No cloud native API integration ? UI?
sleepytimetea··on Why Xcode tools are slow after reboot (2021)
A periodic job to backup the db and then a start script to restore after a reboot might be necessary here.
sleepytimetea··on [dead]
Yes - to me, the sentence construction seemed to indicate a translation engine was involved.
sleepytimetea··on The ESP32 Bootrom (2018)
Are those the new S3 versions ?
sleepytimetea··on IR-controlling the new air conditioner in the vintage server room
I read the whole blog... there is mention of a Perl script and also some expect script code on there, haven't used it seen Perl since 2008 but I guess antique computers have no Python.

Also, having worked with Arduino Nanos and then moved on to ESP32s which have lots of RAM, Wifi and OTA updates, I see a lot of the issues could have been sidestepped. I've built some IR targets that trigger from laser nerf guns and my own IR demodulator from raw electronic components so am a little familiar with IR libraries on Arduino and such myself. Good job at the end - the control loop should work to keep those antique servers at decent temperatures.

sleepytimetea··on Ask HN: Do you know HN-like sites outside IT?
Reddit ?
sleepytimetea··on Interactive: SARS-CoV-2 battles our immune system
Impressive article - very nicely illustrated. Just enough technical details for laymen without losing the reader's attention.

Since it evolved in bats, which have had an arms race with it for a long time, it was OP once it crossed over into humans and their puny non-bat immune systems.
