skullone··on NTSB says Boeing is withholding key details about door plug on Alaska 737 MAX 9
Oh my lord that all sounds so seriously bad. I can't even believe this. My grandpa used to assemble landing gears in the 80s for boeing and they kept records of the torque applied to every nut and bolt, in duplicate or triplicate (2 people in assembly would check, and 1 from QA). He would be rolling in his grave right now
skullone··on Worldcoin hit with temporary ban in Spain over privacy concerns
Lol. Are you being absurd, or are you serious? Tracking admittance or distribution of something in a third world country for the purpose of food aid, and you want to scan their iris? You could do stamps on their hands, tickets (you know, like they've used at carnivals, events, sports complexes, 50,000+ person concerts, etc) with a supply and administration cost of near $0

Lol what's this good explanation of scanning people's eyes?
skullone··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
Windows 11 is pretty terrible. So much bad design, I wonder how they do it.
skullone··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
First to the "everyday smartphone" market. Kinda. It didn't do anything very well at launch, not even copy/paste, but it was still awesome at the time
skullone··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
Apologies then, I understood it to mean tasteless, not necesarrily bright or colorful.
skullone··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
My point exactly. It is such a locked down platform, that I cannot for the life of me understand why people fawn over iphones. They were first to market, but market mover advantage is gone, Apple has not made a good iphone value proposition in years. Especially if you hold it wrong.
skullone··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
They only have like 2% of the PC/laptop market, so not many people think they're that attractive. I like my M1 MacBook itself, but hate the aluminum chassis. I find it brutally garish, sharp and uncomfortable (hurts to type on, hurts my wrists where they rest on a sharp edge, so it's basically a desktop with an attached keyboard and mouse)
skullone··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
Aren't Apple products also uniformly garish and tasteless with tons of half baked features too? Glad we don't have to see what dumb ideas Apple had in store for us in the automotive realm. The m1/m2 are good chips, but macos is stagnant, iPhones have... memojis as their new feature? Apple has good industrial design for devices that fit in the palm of your hand. I truthfully cannot fathom how that could extend to a car, simply makes no sense. Where would they make them?

Barracuda Networks?
skullone··on Helios: A distribution of Illumos powering the Oxide Rack
It seems healthy to have options, almost like the universe is healing a bit after oracle bought Sun. I can't imagine better hands bringing the oxide system together than that team. As an engineer who works entirely with Linux anymore, I pine for the days of another strong Unix in the mix to run high value workloads on. Comparing openvswitch on Linux, to say, the crossbow SDN facility on Solaris, I'd take crossbow any day. Nothing "wrong" with Linux, but it is sorely lacking in "master plan" levels of cohesion with all the tooling taking their own path, often bringing complexity that requires even for abstraction with yet more complicated tooling on top.
skullone··on Sam Bankman-Fried: Convicted 'Crypto King' will not face second trial
Cooperating with the prosecution is torture and duress? I'd be ok giving them maximum sentences either way, but they have the opportunity to cooperate to reduce the charges or sentences
skullone··on SETI at FAST in China
Oh man. RFI can be a bit broad spectrum too. Motors, wifi, lights, phones. Prob gonna be a challenge
skullone··on Sam Altman's knack for dodging bullets with a little help from bigshot friends
He's not unique, instead very textbook sociopath. Lines up with the alleged abuse of his younger sister too. There's not much more to him than a wheeler and dealer, self serving abuser.
skullone··on An underground delivery train comes to the Atlanta suburbs
At first I was like "good luck getting humans to back out orderly" then I remembered these were autonomous and can just get ordered to go back.

skullone··on Ask HN: Where should I incoporate my business
A US LLC isn't the worst idea. Benefits include getting easier vetting from US based companies to some degree, some payment systems get the wheels greased if you are a US company and such too.
skullone··on Australia to ban engineered stone
I mean, you probably should disclose your property has asbestos to trades working on your house - and they probably would wear the right PPE. Lots of people are fine with small risks with regular materials like sheetrock on small jobs (cutting a hole or something). But really, that should've been disclosed to workers as they enter your property.

Slow car sales in general is a thing, I think I read there's like 3 million brand new cars sitting in inventory, when the normal is less than a million

My pixel5 is doing good with Firefox. I credit as blockers for keeping the browser performant
skullone··on FDA approves a CRISPR-based medicine for treatment of sickle cell disease
I think insurance paid for the tests in fact. We had the doctors collect stem cells from the umbilical cord and they're stored at some place. That was like $1000 each kid, and $100 a year to keep. But after like 10 years you get some money back if you don't use them and they get "donated" to someone or to research.
skullone··on FDA approves a CRISPR-based medicine for treatment of sickle cell disease
We voluntarily did DNA tests on both of us to rule out any parental defects, as well as tests in utero to see if there were issues. Luckily there were none, but we had some discussions on what we might do. It seems reasonable and responsible to perform these tests to be informed on your major life choices.

I'll criticize Apple when it's due, but I'm glad the OS isn't filled with absolute trash all over the place on a fresh install. I can't even bring myself to build a new PC for gaming, because whenever I turn on a Windows box I get disgusted by what it's become.
skullone··on FreeBSD 14.0 Delivering Great Performance Uplift
Yah, this is a weird one. Did you test the performance with and without directory integration?
skullone··on FreeBSD 14.0 Delivering Great Performance Uplift
Are you integrating with IPA for Kerberos NFS? Or just uid/gid mappings? Wonder why the perf would be so bad over nfs after either though
