skrbjc··on EU countries already hitting some of their sustainable energy targets for 2030
Pretty sure most solar panels are also sourced from countries that are not aligned with western values, while Australia is one of the largest producers of Uranium ore and nuclear powerplants are built locally.
skrbjc··on Why is no one making a new version of old Facebook?
I'll say that groups on facebook for various interests still seem quite active, but these are more targeted for a shared interest, like espresso machines, rather than a group of people that know each other and are interacting in a group, like XYZ High School Class of 2024.
skrbjc··on The dating app paradox
Most people in the past and in the current day have none of that and still have children. The most well-developed and stable countries will most of what you laid out have some of the lowest birth rates.
skrbjc··on The dating app paradox
It's still very difficult to raise a baby on your own and even with two people. It will still feel like someone's career is harder to manage with a child, and so I don't think these things are really going to make much difference for the average person that will likely not be able to afford these things anyway.

A committed married couple having children at a healthy age, feeding them well, and keeping them safe are going to still perform extraordinarily well against what you've laid out, and will likely also have higher happiness levels.

skrbjc··on YC: Requests for Startups
Ywes, but if we have cheap materials here, it makes it more enticing to manufacture here as well.
skrbjc··on Feds want to ban the Flipper Zero – Experts say it's a scapegoat
Cars with keys only are much easier to steal. You just have to break the physical barrier and and twist the keyhole in the column, for example, rather than dick around with a device. I guess it depends what type of criminal you are.
skrbjc··on YC: Requests for Startups
Someone needs to tackle Epic in the EMR space and overthrow their closed system.
skrbjc··on YC: Requests for Startups
"Bring manufacturing back to America". Is it possible to build a cell phone in the US?

I think we should start more basic and work our way up. For example, there isn't a real reason we can't produce all of our domestic iron and steel needs in the USA, but we end up importing a lot right now. Same with aluminum, etc. But this isn't something YC is really going to help with unless they are funding manufacturing and industrial tech that makes it easier/cheaper to set-up and run these types of facilities.

skrbjc··on The dating app paradox
I've thought for a while now that it is a matter of national interest that your population couples up and has children. It's immensely important for the success of a nation and it's odd that the majority of how people meet now is through data apps and that there is no oversight over these at all. They have every incentive to match you with someone you are more likely to have a short term relationship than match you with someone that will result in a successful long term relationship. This has terrible long-term outcomes for a population at a large enough scale. With all of the talk of how algorithms can affect our society through news and social media, I've been somewhat surprised that dating app algorithms have not had much attention.
skrbjc··on UK plan to digitise wills and destroy paper originals "insane" say experts
The obvious right answer is digitize them and then keep the originals, perhaps in a less easily accessible and potentially cheaper storage location.
skrbjc··on New PFAS discovered with novel testing method
Kinda like how UC-Berkeley refers to itself as "California" or just "Cal"
skrbjc··on Why doctors pay millions in fees that could be spent on care
Not sure if I agree with the other person, but I believe the point is that it takes more time and money to comply with regulations, which makes it harder to build that software, which means that fewer will do that, which means those that do can charge more.
skrbjc··on Inductive charging highway section to be built in Florida

skrbjc··on PornHub blocks users in Utah, cites state’s age verification law
Surely you understand that happening to see a woman's nipple is completely different to a 14 year old sitting up at 4am masterbating to whatever intense porn they can get their hands on are two completely different things. And if you think the latter is bad, as you should, then it makes sense to err on the side of caution when figuring out a way to reduce the likelihood of a young person, who has not fully developed a sense of self control, getting sucked into the wormhole of a porn addiction. If that means reducing the likelihood of an innocent breast being seen, then that seems like a reasonable trade-off.

Also, you say Europe is more open about nudity, implying that is a good thing, but Asia and the middle east are in many cases more prudish than even the US, so why not look to them or use them as an example? Where's your objective measure for which societies we should admire and emulate?

skrbjc··on Use of antibiotics in farming ‘endangering human immune system’
Much of that "marginal land" originally had animals grazing on it anyway. We have barely more cows in this country now than buffalo at their peak. "Re-wilding" land would just mean we have animals grazing at that we don't eat.
skrbjc··on Saying Goodbye to GitHub
AI tools like GitHub copilot are able to help “give back” to open source because open source developers can use them to be more productive.

Interestingly, in T2, you could destroy the entirety of Cyberdyne's tech by blowing up one building. In our world of cloud computing today, it would be very difficult to even know what to blow up.
skrbjc··on Apple's Popularity with Gen Z Poses Challenges for Android
It's because owning an android phone will never be fashionable because most don't really care about what's on the phone, they care about the phone itself. The question you should be asking, is why did google never have a viable branding strategy for their pixel phones.

The closest anyone has gotten to the iphone, in my opinion, was a period of time when samsung was competing with features and camera quality with their phones. It seems, though, that apple has completely caught up and the race for features doesn't seem to be as important as it was in the past. Now it's down to status, and you just can't compare with an iphone. Especially in the US when you get those green bubbles popping up in text messages, screaming that someone is not part of the club.

skrbjc··on I changed my mind about nuclear waste
Mutated fish was one at least.
skrbjc··on I changed my mind about nuclear waste
The economies of scale for nuclear require far fewer units to have a benefit compared to something like solar panels. Because you aren't building 100s of 1000s of them like you need with solar panels.

Just building two identical plants at the same time creates a huge cost savings.

skrbjc··on I changed my mind about nuclear waste
You're sharing misleading information here. While this is true recently, it's not like France has been consistently short of energy. Typically it's Germany that imports energy from France.

"Due to the technical problems affecting French reactors, Germany for the first time sold more power to France than it received from its neighbour, doubling its year-earlier export volume there.

France produced 15.1% less power in 2022 and the volume fell short of national usage by 1%."

skrbjc··on California will give $2000 if owners convert their ICE cars to EV
By offering a meaningless subsidy that doesn't change anyone's calculus on whether this is worthwhile?
skrbjc··on California will give $2000 if owners convert their ICE cars to EV
This just seems like a way for someone to say they passed some bill that "helps" climate change, when in reality no-one will actually use it because EV conversions are exceptionally rare and generally high priced.

No-one is doing a bottom of the barrel EV conversion on a run down 2008 toyota corolla. I just don't see who this is targeted towards in any practical sense.

skrbjc··on Gitlab to lay off 7% of staff
In my view they see a few benefits. If the "market climate" is layoffs, then they can be much less competitive with offers to any candidates they do want to hire. It's an opportunity to let go a contingent of lower-performing workers, and lastly, it's a way for the CFO to send a message to all the managers that they aren't getting the incremental headcount they are always asking for to inflate their team sizes. I don't necessarily think this is a good thing, but I think dismissing it as copy-cat behavior is not digging deeper than the surface layer. Instead of the group of managers making the case they are doing a good job because their team has grown over time, there is a shift in power to the managers saying they have saved the company x number of doll-hairs because they cut xyz budget and team.
skrbjc··on Solar panels disguised as terracotta tiles in Pompeii
This page has pricing: https://www.dyaqua.it/invisiblesolar/_en/rooftile-invisible-...

Looks like 7k euros for I think that is 9 square meters. Not sure what a typical solar install goes for now, but based on this it would cost 70k just in materials for my 1k sqft roof. Doesn't seem economical.

skrbjc··on Why Is Colorectal Cancer Rising Rapidly Among Young Adults?
A quick google search says gay men have cancer rates double or more than straight men, so maybe. The article doesn't mention it so they either don't think it could be linked or wanted to avoid that subject since it would obviously be a touchy one. Although, if they do think there is a connection, it does seem like it would be important to target education to those who have anal sex so they know to get more screenings.
