skkbits··on I Sold My Startup for $25.5 Million
Can we get following information from founder or does anyone know ? 1. When perfectaudience was started ? 2. How much revenue it had at the time of selling ? 3. What was rough ( though not exact ) percentage of company holding by owners at the time of selling ? 4. What software technologies they used for this platform ?
skkbits··on How much is your personal data worth?
Just an FYI : Don't click finish button at the end. This is very sneaky technique to gauge personal information about you. Though it is not asking your name it will calculate fingerprint / signature of your info ( based on IP + traffic analysis + many other techniques ). If you look at the form after you calculate personal information worth, that data is transmitted to "http://emailthis.t.ft.com/form" I don't want to say FT are bad guys but its good practice not to share any information that would give chance to uniquely identify you.

This is how profiling and targeting works ( source : I work for one of the two largest data broker )

skkbits··on Working from home
While working for my previous employer I always ended up working more hours when I worked from home. I just don't know why ? In office, I at least get up for lunch, coffee but when worked from home I developed habit of working while having lunch and not putting away laptop. I guess it requires a lot of discipline to work from home and manage yourself as if its actual office.

skkbits··on Programming Is a Dead End Job
The company I work is around for 40+ years now. There are some folks as "Programmer Analyst", "Software Engineer", "Sr. Engineer" for 20+ years now. I have asked many of them why you didn't move up the ladder and report to someone junior ( or H1B in his early 30's). Most of the time answer I got it, they love what they do. They love having opportunity to program , provide logical + thoughtful solutions. Of course, when new management comes in and there are times to make decision to layoff, these people become victim due to range of salary they have reached, age, skillset. This is very unfortunate but true. I would not completely write off what author is saying but I believe it depends on individual prospective. Of course, money is important factor but if you are getting a job 8 am to 5pm + raising your family/kids comfortably + spending time with family and yet have good balance when you retire then being programmer is quite good deal actually.
skkbits··on Programming Is a Dead End Job
>Also, it is very difficult to go from becoming IT manager to IT director or higher, especially in bigger companies.

This is so much true.

>Opportunity to become VP, or even director is not all that common.

Completely agree. You hit nail on the head.

skkbits··on Ask HN: Your thoughts on if H1B employees should contribute to 401k or not?
Though I am replying late I would like to thank all for answering.
skkbits··on Technology Giants Settle Hiring Suit
Honest question: Who gets the settlement ? Anyone who worked for defendants between certain years ? How do they determine 60K employees ? What if someone has left the industry altogether or in an unfortunate case, is no more ? Can someone shed light on this area ?
skkbits··on The Story Of Larry Page's Comeback
Larry is truly amazing and no question about that. To me though, this comes as less surprise. His contributions can certainly be attributed to few not so well known facts.

1. Highly educated parents. His father has Ph.D. and is considered pioneer in computer science and artificial intelligence ( source : wikipedia) 2. Mother : Comp. Science professor 3. His brother Carl Page Jr. sold company called eGroups to Yahoo!. So when you consider all this facts together, with kind of upbringing he had it less surprise that he followed the suit and created search engine. I bet this sort of environment must have played crucial role when he went for VC capital. If you have read crossing the chasm it talks about how a company with few hundered people can go mainstream. Larry leveraged all his background, upbringing and knowledge he had to create one of great software product.

skkbits··on The Case Against ISP Tolls
Is that "tata" from India ? How do they play role here ?
skkbits··on “Don't fuck up the culture” – A letter to the Airbnb team
This post deserves more upvotes. You are right on spot , Sir. I earn moderate income and nothing from Airbnb but if we are really talking about shortening income gap there has to be check at some level. Right now, with AirBnB model , there is no way to guarantee that this actually helps needy than those who own more than one house/apartment homes. There are chances of ( or infact already happening ?) system abuse where people buy houses solely to list it on Airbnb. I would wholeheartedly expect cities to chip in at this point and make adjustment to tax code to heavily tax those , who solely buy to list houses on Airbnb.
