All Pixels have the hardware, it's only activated on Japan-based skus. You can root and change the sku to the japanese model and it works. Allegedly the Pixel 11 is only the US sku and the international sku, so all international 11s should have it activated unless they do some serious shenanigans.

Are we the same person?

I subbed to Wired last year during a sale and uh... I was never given a premium account linked to my email and support would never answer me. I signed up for the print edition as well and never received any of those. I was getting their newsletter though and that was new. Then I emailed to cancel when I got a billing notification to my email and they were able to cancel it just fine so apparently I did have an account? And then like two weeks ago I received the latest print edition.

Truly have no idea what that was about, but anyway glad to see someone else out here supporting almost all the same news orgs as me (404media is amazing!)

The Pixel Slate actually did run ChromeOS and then could run Android apps in a VM haha.

And those aren't rumors, there is a pretty big effort to get Android ready for ChromeOS and get feature parity. Which to me is really unfortunate, CrOS has such a nice linux base.

This only happens if the AICore app is installed. Since it isn't on Graphene then the full 16gb allocation of ram is available for the entire system.

You can expand or shrink every tile now instead of only being able to swap position of the tiles. So more tiles per page.

You might enjoy some of qntm's work[0].

Maybe start with this short ("I Don't Know, Timmy, Being God Is a Big Responsibility")[1] since it is similar to The Egg in my opinion.

Cool yeah. I think the thing I was most interested in was interacting with Bluesky through rust. Is there a decent sdk for that?

Do you have that code posted somewhere by chance? I would be interested in browsing through it!

I actually have a copy that I stumbled across recently at a book store near me. I'm sure it won't be like the old days, but it was really cool to pick a hard copy up while out and about in town.

In 2021 they praised the device as having good performance at a price point that is ~$30-40 less than what Google is launching their device at. The second gen of that Fire stick is selling for $40 right now on sale with Wi-Fi 6E. I saw some benchmarks posted of this chip and some others (with a Pixel 6 thrown in arguing that using a bunch of older Tensor chips might have also been a good idea.) And also a Shield TV which is 5 years old at this point.

Single core:

Fire Stick - 140

Shield TV - 279 (99% faster, twice as fast).

Tensor G1 (Pixel 6 Pro) - 1007 (619% faster, seven times faster)

A15 (Apple TV) - 1684 (1103% faster, 12 times as fast).

Multi-core:

Fire Stick - 491

Shield TV - 971 (98% faster, twice as fast).

Tensor G1 (Pixel 6 Pro) - 2541 (418% faster, five times faster)

A15 (Apple TV) - 4489 (814% faster, nine times as fast).

skiman10··on Source Code for Area 51 (2005) by Midway Studios Austin Found at Garage Sale
Every time someone finds "lost media", I always wonder how much media is lost to time because the wrong people went to the garage sale and did not know how rare a find was and it gets thrown away at the end of the sale.

Is this still a valid complaint since they have a new interim CEO? I think we should wait and see what Laura Chambers does and then the new pick after this year.

Okay so it's not just me. I feel like the map issues have been absolutely infuriating recently. There are also offline maps that are downloaded as well so I don't understand how the maps are so awful. I don't remember it being this bad in 2019/2020.
skiman10··on Chicago-area Tesla charging stations lined with dead cars in freezing cold
I should have said "specific chargers around the area" probably since there were other locations with issues. But still, I had no issues charging in the Chicago area though.
skiman10··on Chicago-area Tesla charging stations lined with dead cars in freezing cold
I drove to the UP and back the last few days with a 2019 Model 3 SR+ (mentioning this so people understand the range I was working with) with no issues besides increased charging stops because of road and weather conditions. This issue is a specific issue with this charger and the location. This sucks for all the drivers with dead cars, but I feel like the situation is being mischaracterized by this shallow news article. There were failures on Tesla the company to mark this charger as inoperable so the route planner would not use it and for them to not repair the location in a timely manner. There has been a lot of discussion in the Tesla and Chicago subreddit about what is happening in the area to cause this situation with these chargers, so it would be nice to get more information from Tesla itself.

Oh and yes this is not just an EV issue. Just sharing my experience of my car being totally fine traveling in this weather.

The third party developer scene is getting dire on Android, and I have definitely been considering jumping ship soon. I've lived my entire computing life on Android... But Google is losing a lot of confidence from me.
