skhr0680··on A photo on Wikipedia can ruin your life
People need to stop blindly trusting Wikipedia. I have seen sourced facts that failed a sniff test, and checking the source the article contradicted the source it linked to, and that’s only the times I noticed. Couple that with the amount of other sites and media that copy off Wikipedia (citogenesis) and BS spreads like wildfire.

“Why do you still use Wikipedia?” because the good parts are a great human achievement and even the OK parts can be adequate as a broad outline of a topic.

“Why don’t you just fix it?” I try, but it’s hard when I have a busy day and my edit will be reverted within minutes by a full-time Wikipedian / Expert Wikipedia Rules Lawyer and self-appointed lord of said article.

Even if you don’t go as far as working on side projects at work, automating even 30min-1hr worth of manual tasks can leave you less exhausted when you get home.

Nike somehow managed to f**k up sewing a piece of canvas to a piece of rubber and now a $40 pair of Converse sneakers is functionally equivalent to or worse than a $10 knock off. The only value in those shoes is literally the brand name.

skhr0680··on Apple M1 Pro and Max Surprises
I really wanted a cheaper Mac tower ten years ago but most of the reasons I wanted one aren’t really relevant anymore:

The future finally happened in terms of fast external peripherals (especially storage), and I don’t have a burning need for a Mac with upgradable internal storage anymore.

In 2010 I got a $100 graphics card that let my PC do things that the PS3 and Xbox could only dream of. Now for the cost of a “mid-range” GPU it’s possible to get a Switch with a game or two that look fine and run at fast FPS.

One thing: Macs need to cut the Bs and give us upgradable RAM back

skhr0680··on macOS Monterey
The easiest way to avoid “surprises” when installing a Mac OS update is to wait a few months and let early adopters be the gunnies pigs.

> I still haven't had to go through the process of cancelling my Creative Cloud subscription. I'm sooo hoping they didn't throw in a bunch of dark patterns in there as well but I have feeling they will.

Their gotcha that I know about is that their advertised price per month is actually a year subscription / 12, with the true monthly subscription hidden. When you cancel they’ll try to get you to pay out the remaining months of the year.

skhr0680··on The 'impossible' crane shot from Soy Cuba (1964) [video]
The shot from OP looks like IR film, it’s what makes it look “HDR” with plenty of detail in the shadows and sky. If it were shot on normal film then exposing for the sky would make the areas in shadow look black.
skhr0680··on Child suicides in Japan hit record high
It’s sad but I’m not surprised. Senior high school is widely viewed as the best years of ones life in Japan, and kids who started in 2020 have had to live with senior high school (minus the fun parts) for 1.5/3 years.
skhr0680··on FIFA seeks $1B+ (per 4 years) from EA for name usage
I wish EA had spun Generals out into a separate IP, instead of treating its customers like idiots, with a result that was unfair to everyone: C&C fans didn’t get a follow up to RA2, and Generals got a ton of hate for reasons that had nothing to do with the actual game, which was a very good RTS with interesting factions and fun / clever mechanics.

skhr0680··on Why Japan Looks the Way It Does: Zoning [video]
I remember people making fun of the Xbox for being too huge and “American”!

there’s always the never-used huge tatami room at grandpa’s house in the countryside

skhr0680··on Why Japan Looks the Way It Does: Zoning [video]
If you can find a way to make money without working for a company that demands all of your time for a small wage, Japan is a great place to live. Having schools etc in walking distance means that all of the local people keep an eye out to make sure each other’s kids are safe. It’s really nice.

skhr0680··on Sunlight affects whether languages have a word for ‘blue’
That’s why no one should blindly trust Wikipedia. There’s no evidence for the Japanese “go” light ever having a blue color, the first traffic lights in Japan were imported from the US and the first Japanese traffic law to mention traffic lights called them 緑 (green) not 青 (green or blue depending on the context).
skhr0680··on Sunlight affects whether languages have a word for ‘blue’
> A "greenhorn" or other inexperienced person is also Aoi.

The etymology of that is different though. In Japanese it's because babies have a blue spot on their ass.

skhr0680··on Sunlight affects whether languages have a word for ‘blue’
青 encompassed both blue and green until the Meiji era, even now there are plenty of common words that use “ao” in place of “Midori” See: 青菜、青リンゴ、etc.

At one point the traffic law referred to 緑色 traffic lights, but was updated to 青色 post-war in the 1940s. It still means ao (green) not ao (blue).
