sirdogealot··on Am I evil, or is killing patents just plain fun?
If lots of people are helping to translate, it could be. It depends.
sirdogealot··on Am I evil, or is killing patents just plain fun?
It wouldn't even require machine learnign imho.

From the first example:

generating, using a processor = calculating

a plurality of images = images

clusters = groups

It's more of a translation software than machine learning.

Perhaps the translation software could suggest 3-4 variations of the legalese sentence and allow users to vote for the best translation?

sirdogealot··on Gillette's New Razor Could Overturn Its 100-Year-Old Business Model
I can confirm by way of my own beard and all of my friends' beards.

I seem to notice them everywhere these days.

And verified by google trends, they are certainly on the uptick: http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=beard%2C%20beards

Personally, I do it for convenience. It's nice having that extra 10 minutes every morning, and not possibly cutting my neck or face before I've had my first cup of coffee. That, and it looks badass. Almost every man throughout history I admire has had a beard, so why stop now?!

I bought a cheap Phillips $30 beard trimmer a few years ago (that's equivalent to about a month's worth of gillette razors for myself) and I have been loving my beard ever since.

sirdogealot··on SF’s Housing Crisis Explained
http://techcrunch.com/2014/04/14/sf-housing/

>The true culprit behind our housing problems: let us deflect blame to Mountain View’s burrowing owl!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoreline_Park,_Mountain_View

>City of Mountain View evicted a pair of burrowing owls so that it could sell a parcel of land to Google to build a hotel at Shoreline Boulevard and Charleston Road.

...wtf?

sirdogealot··on BitUndo – Double Spending as a service
So basically it's a 0-10 minute buffer on transactions that if you pay them enough to cancel your mistaken one... they'll do their best to get the secondary transaction mined first?

Cool!

sirdogealot··on TurboTax Maker Intuit Funnels Millions to Lobby Against Easier Tax Returns
Recently sitting down and manually preparing my taxes for the 9th year in a row now... I am not surprised.

This type of tax-code-manipulation must certainly have been happening since the dawn of time. That, or it was written to confuse the public on purpose.

Finding, reading, learning and understanding the tax code is no mean feat for a layman that was told nothing of it in school (none of us Canadians were taught taxes in public school). And this is coming from a relatively smart person who willingly reads cryptography papers and learns new programming languages for fun.

How much more difficult does TurboTax propose that the IRS make filing? Should we get individually filed returns notarized by our deceased relatives as well?

It usually takes me about 12-24 straight hours of work, and this is for a simple sole-proprietorship that just tallies up income and deducts expenses.

I manage to get it done properly and on time every year, but realizing so many schortcuts along the way that "they" could be making for us yet fail to year after year... it's really quite infuriating.

That, and the fact that I have to do the work to figure out how much I owe them. :/

I am proud to have completed my taxes myself and will strongly urge everybody I know not to vote for TurboTax with their wallets and why.

sirdogealot··on Show HN: I built Swinton Report for unbiased, user driven news a HN clone.
Are you faking those upvote values? Because it's pretty obvious that with 0 comments on every URL submit and 100+ upvotes that you are.

My advice from launching and failing at my own HN clone is to make the false upvotes look more realistic. Don't be afraid of making them in the 20-40 votes range. A lot of people liked HN better back when it had a smaller userbase.

sirdogealot··on My Ideas, My Boss’s Property
I find nothing as pleasurable in this world as seeing people in the wrong get upset that they are in the wrong.

Thanks for the entertaining story! And sorry to hear of your mental anguish.

sirdogealot··on Suicide Prevention Sheds a Longstanding Taboo: Talking About Attempts
Perhaps china is tougher on their Women than their men?

>It has been found that suicide makes up for about 30% of deaths of women living in rural China.

Wow... that must be pretty bad for them living out there. Can you imagine living in a place where there was a 1 in 3 chance you'd off yourself before dying naturally? Wow... just wow.

sirdogealot··on Suicide Prevention Sheds a Longstanding Taboo: Talking About Attempts
A friend of a friend of mine's experience answers your number 1 question:

He wasn't very good at aiming, apparently. When he shot the bullet into his head, probably in a drunken stupor, he missed his brain and lived... probably still wanting to shoot himself and succeed, but being physically unable to do so at this point he just lay there until someone found him.

By the time he recovered in hospital from the wound, he wanted to live! Albeit with a very disfigured face, which I thought would be a hinderence to an already depressed individual, but he sees it differently and we're all glad for it!

sirdogealot··on Does your browser rejected revoked certificates?
Chromium tells me:

Cannot connect to the real revoked.grc.com

Something is currently interfering with your secure connection to revoked.grc.com.

Try to reload this page in a few minutes or after switching to a new network. If you have recently connected to a new Wi-Fi network, finish logging in before reloading.

If you were to visit revoked.grc.com right now, you might share private information with an attacker. To protect your privacy, Chrome will not load the page until it can establish a secure connection to the real revoked.grc.com.

I pressed reload a few times after a few minutes and still see the same page. Am I doing it right or what?

sirdogealot··on The Short Answers To Every Matt Cutts Video
Great website and great idea in general! I love being able to read a concise answer rather than watch a video when time is a constraint.
sirdogealot··on Is Google crippling Firefox?
I can't quite put my finger on it, but whenever I access maps.google.com from Firefox running on my Arch Linux... I am unable to zoom or search or do anything. It just shows me the world.

When I open the same URL in chromium however, everything works perfectly.

Just my 2 cents.

sirdogealot··on Ask HN: What would you do with a Billion dollars?
Put 100% of it into education in the most economical way possible.

I believe that all problems in this world are caused by a simple lack of education.

sirdogealot··on Digital Ocean needs to start showing outages on their status page
OVH doesn't inform you because you're paying commodity pricing for unmanaged servers. It's actually your job to keep track of the downtime, not theirs.

Digitalocean stands to make ~$10,000 monthly of of a "$1,000 server" because it is somewhat managed, and thus has the responsability of informing the 100 or 1,000 odd customers affected because of their mistake imho.

sirdogealot··on Cryptocurrencies will create a fifth protocol layer
I was wondering why it had the ?q=1 values added to a blog URL.

Good eye.

sirdogealot··on Automation Alone Isn’t Killing Jobs
I don't get the "back in my grandpappy's day the steam engines left and we still survivded" notion that automation is not killing jobs. Most everybody was employable back in the 1820s. Simply because of the fact that there was no automation. Train took your horse carriage job? Go work in the fields.

If all department stores adopted automated cashiers, the cashier as a retail option as we know it is dead. Killed.

If all farms adopt tractors and automatic harvesting machines, the crop picker option as we know it is dead. Killed.

Etc. Etc.

There will come a time when we can conceive of a new task to be completed, while simultaneously sketching up the automatic machine to complete the task.

In fact, this job-killing-automation already exists in the form of the latest and greatest production lines. They were not built to be filled with workers, only product.

sirdogealot··on PopcornTime official website is back
It's quite obvious that more people are interested in upvoting articles related to popcorn time right now than xbmc.

I'm sure when xbmc was first released it would have had it's fair share of coverage on HN back in 2002.

sirdogealot··on PopcornTime official website is back
eli is referring to the binary downloaded from the website possibly containing malware. Not that the website might possible infect you through a drive-by-download.
sirdogealot··on How to Make Money from Spotify by Streaming Silence
I remember one of my favorite radio stations mentioning this work and then mentioning how they successfully sued somebody for "copying it". Vulfpeck had better watch out!

"...in 2002 the composer Mike Batt made a six-figure, out-of-court settlement for infringing on John Cage’s 1952 work, 4’33″

sirdogealot··on Popcorn-app
Unfortunately I doubt the sparse uploading of most older TV shows means it will be a long time before we see a full-blown netflix competitor.

Moderately popular TV shows that aired last year are fairly difficult to find a complete season of via torrent for example.
