siproprio··on Brave and Firefox to intercept links that force-open in Microsoft Edge
> Brave Software is also considering taking things one step further. The company is planning to intercept Windows Search/Cortana links to Bing and redirect them to its users’ default search engine instead.

Yes! THANK YOU! OH MY GOD THANK YOU BRAVE!! FINALLY!

siproprio··on Is Electron That Bad?
Use QT, with no web views, and native context menus and tooltips that can be shown and modified outside of the DOM.
siproprio··on The web is swallowing the desktop whole (2017)
In the telecom business, low latency is viewed as a competitive advantage!

Bonus points if your competitor pays their employee's in US Dollars! Means we can make a BETTER product, for cheaper!

How is it going for the Nylas Email Client? Does it still exist?

Also very importantly: Are users paying premium for the Nylas Electron Qwality, or is it cheaper to just use Office 365/AWS/Google?

siproprio··on VS Code online (GitHub Codespaces) is live

Yeah, but the vscode team is actively trying to break vscodium.
siproprio··on Windows Terminal Preview 1.11 Release
It's been slow like this (and with lots of user complaints!) since always!

Perhaps you guys should borrow some of those Microsoft research phd folks to improve terminal performance[1].

Notice the lag when dragging the tooltip!

It takes seconds for the tooltip to appear!

Being microsoft, wouldn't be surprised if they started deleting negative feedback.

siproprio··on NodeJS security cheat sheet
Yes! Thank you! This reminded example reminded me why I hated working with node!

siproprio··on The mermaid is taking over Google search in Norway
I've seen this trend in other places too:

For example, Microsoft routinely deletes negative feedback from GitHub issue for vs code.

siproprio··on Ask HN: Could the telemetry collected by VSCode be used maliciously?
I used to like vs code, and it made me productive. These days, every day that passes, I find something that surprises me. Things go from annoying changes to to grab "beginners" attention, to finding out hidden states or configuration where the developers say they purposefully designed something to make it difficult for users to change and understand.

Today I'm outraged when I needed to change my terminal in a workspace setting, and I found out they had a prompt that is designed for people to not notice, and the code is obfuscated to prevent people from understanding it.

siproprio··on Onivim 2 is a retro-futuristic modal editor
Does it really have INSTANT startup time (i.e. Sublime Text)?

If it has, I'm interested.

Was not able to find the trial though.

It's a very promising project.

Unfortunately, I was not able to successfully install it following the Getting Started install instructions.

siproprio··on Brave Search beta
Why do they use > instead of /?

It's Horrible.

They also do not indicate when the result is a .pdf or a document.

The best feature that google killed was advanced filtering. If instead of privacy brave gave me that, I'll sell my soul in a heartbeat!

siproprio··on Did Windows 10 slow down with each feature update?
Anecdotally, this holds out for me.
siproprio··on Did Windows 10 slow down with each feature update?
There's a calculator discussion now that calc is open source: https://github.com/microsoft/calculator/issues/209

All other UWP apps that do not get GitHub attention are 100x worse. Microsoft Photos, for instance...

siproprio··on Did Windows 10 slow down with each feature update?
4GB RAM is plenty of common.

siproprio··on Did Windows 10 slow down with each feature update?
So... UWP is a tenbagger: It got 10x slower in 5 years.

I always like to remind folks that it takes longer to open calculator - or windows terminal - than to open excel.

siproprio··on State of the Windows: How many layers of UI inconsistencies are in Windows 10?
> Under Windows, the rule has been that basically anything goes

Those rules were set by example by microsoft.

siproprio··on State of the Windows: How many layers of UI inconsistencies are in Windows 10?
What about me? I don't care about backwards compatibility - but I don't want "UWP" because it's impossible to make great apps following the guidelines.
siproprio··on There are at least 10 different Microsoft design conventions in Windows 11
Well... your problem is solved... disk management has no UI anymore...
siproprio··on There are at least 10 different Microsoft design conventions in Windows 11
The trick is, these newer UWP apps, they all take fewer clicks, because they barely have any features!

Startup time is stable though: windows calculator has the same startup time as excel. Don't get me started on microsoft photos...

Modern UI quickly breaks down when you need to have complex software - software that needs a menubar, for example.

siproprio··on Windows 11 screenshots leak, show new Start menu and more
The Windows Terminal is just awful! Slow! Bad UI, feels like a touch-based UWP app. Has absolutely no concept of Windowing, everything just feels awful because they follow the UWP design guidelines!

And extremely buggy as well!

Yuck the file explorer.

Not only whitespace, but also look at the size of the search, and path!
