yo swyx, nice to see you on here as well!

Bookmarked!

Took me a while to scroll up to the top of that list. You should change that tagline. Nobody is getting through that list in a hurry! :)

singhkays··on Twitter previews Ticketed Spaces
Ben Thompson had a wild take on this

https://twitter.com/benthompson/status/1395766118304780292

> A creator sells a Ticketed Space for $5. The creator, who people are willing to pay for, gets $2.80. Twitter, who facilitated the connection and created the product, gets $0.70. Apple/Google, who leverage OS API control into a tax on all activity, do nothing and get $1.50.

> Imagine people arguing in 1998 that Microsoft deserves 30% of all software sales with zero alternatives allowed lmao

singhkays··on Notion API – public beta
+1 on Obsidian. It requires a different way of taking notes to be really useful but it's all part of learning to take better notes.

I love this!

As a casual user, I can see myself using this to put together quick landing pages

singhkays··on Apple’s M1 processor and the full 128-bit integer product
Most likely. Same here with my Mini
singhkays··on How to convert your old laptop screen into an external monitor
That's great but Windows Vista??
singhkays··on Node.js 14 is over 20x faster than Python3.8 for fib(n)
Looks like this is not fully compatible with Apple Silicon M1. I tried to install Pandas along with PyPy and ran into failure on building numpy. Looks like it's a known issue https://github.com/numpy/numpy/issues/17807
singhkays··on Apple Silicon M1 supports “billion of colors” a.k.a. HDR 10-bit output
Author here: I don't believe I'm claiming Apple is first to support HDR. I'm pointing out that Apple talked about a lot of things about M1 but not HDR or 10-bit output. Not even in their product pages. I test this out myself to see if it's actually supported.
singhkays··on Apple Silicon M1 supports “billion of colors” a.k.a. HDR 10-bit output
25 Mhz! Wow. Is the the GPU frequency or the CPU?
singhkays··on Apple Silicon M1 supports “billion of colors” a.k.a. HDR 10-bit output
Author here: I hear you. I had to double check a bunch of time whether you can get HDR with 8-bit displays. It seems like not all TV panels out there are 10-bit and they still claim to support HDR.

That's why I played the Spears and Munsil test pattern video with a 8-bit and 10-bit pattern on the same video. The 10-bit pattern was smooth which convinced me that it was outputting 10-bit signal. I also confirmed the TV and monitor I used has a 10-bit panel (not 8-bit + FRC).

> monitor preferences and look for 10-bit or 422 or 444. If you see 420 or 8-bit

I tried the monitor info but didn't find this information. Neither in the TV info. Also Apple hides this information in their System Report.

If you have other tests in mind, I'm happy to test more and get to the bottom of this :)

singhkays··on Apple Silicon M1 supports “billion of colors” a.k.a. HDR 10-bit output
You need both. For e.g. if you take an older GPU like GTX 280, that's not going to output 4K or HDR signal.
singhkays··on Apple Silicon M1 supports “billion of colors” a.k.a. HDR 10-bit output
Author here: I found this page after writing the blog but found it surprising that Apple has listed HDR support here but not on the actual product pages.
singhkays··on Qualcomm to Acquire Nuvia: A CPU Magnitude Shift
Sorry about that! That does sound like a horrible experience :( Let me look into it
singhkays··on Qualcomm to Acquire Nuvia: A CPU Magnitude Shift
> They won't get there with reference designs from ARM.

This nails it! I blogged about how the expected Geekbench scores for Nuvia were better than M1

Nuvia was aiming for the server space but Qualcomm probably saw an opportunity to leapfrog many generations of in-house design and catch up to A and M series chips from Apple.

For reference - Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 888 flagship lacks behind 2019 Apple A13

singhkays··on A sound so loud that it circled the Earth four times (2014)
Thank you for that explanation. Based on that, the original poster meant 194db is 5x the power of 180db but only ~1.6x loud?
singhkays··on A sound so loud that it circled the Earth four times (2014)
TIL how the decibel scale works.

Genuine question, how's the difference between 194db and 180db only 5x? Shouldn't it be more than 10x?

singhkays··on Romain Grosjean walked away from F1’s scariest crash in decades
> After hitting the guardrail at about 137mph (220km/h), Grosjean's car ripped in half and then burst into flames—something that hasn't happened for over 30 years. To make matters worse, the front half penetrated between the guardrails that lined this section of track. As crashes go, this one was more reminiscent of the bad-old days of F1, the kind that claimed the lives of drivers like Roger Williamson or Francois Cevert.

This.....just sounds so horrific and a nightmare scenario for the driver. At that speed I wonder how much of a sense a driver has of going through this experience vs it's over in an instant. Overall, it's a testament to engineering, that a person can walk away alive from a crash like this.

singhkays··on Apple Silicon M1: Black Magic Fuckery
Hah! Author here so this would have been the perfect comment to use in my blog :)
singhkays··on Apple Silicon M1: Black Magic Fuckery
That makes sense and is to be expected. A faster hardware does take away some of the incentive. As the old adage goes - "Necessity is the mother of invention"
singhkays··on Apple Silicon M1: Black Magic Fuckery
I don't understand. Don't those two things seem antithetical? Like why would you make your app inefficient at the same time you optimize it for the CPU?

singhkays··on AMD Reveals the Radeon RX 6000 Series, Coming November 18th
The reason I say "catch-up" is because before Zen 3, Intel still had an IPC lead. With Zen 3, it's the first time in a decade that AMD is able to claim IPC lead.
