simplezeal··on Cleaning up my 200GB iCloud with some JavaScript
If you have a Macbook, you can sync iCloud library at full resolution using Photos app and then export.

simplezeal··on Tesla removes parking sensors, the results are predictably terrible
I am honestly having trouble finding a good alternative in US. Want to see how have others’ experience card with alternate choices?
simplezeal··on A neuroscientist prepares for death
I am reading that now. For reference- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Kalanithi
simplezeal··on JPMorgan hit with $200M in fines for letting employees use WhatsApp
In my last trip to South Asia I was surprised banks using WhatsApp to request identification documents.
simplezeal··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Typing from M1 MBA I picked this weekend. I don't think I enjoyed any device since 2012 MBA so much. Love keyboard, unlock by watch, portability, and unparalleled battery life. Screen is a compromise (coming from 2019 MBP 16") but I am okay with that.
simplezeal··on Ask HN: Best way to organize 100-200 emails/day in Outlook?
Been following this for years - my email volume is enormous. Having all DL mails go to another folder was not sufficient. Making cc emails go to another folder clearly identifies anything that “might” need my attention vs. FYI emails.
simplezeal··on Ask HN: Best way to organize 100-200 emails/day in Outlook?
ONE EMAIL RULE

Email in your inbox is only for email where you are on the TO: line.

All other emails (BCC'ed or CC'ed) should go into a folder called "Inbox - CC."

That's it.

simplezeal··on India’s second wave
This is hyper generalization without any references to back the assertion.
simplezeal··on Amazon Location Service
Not sure how well it compares to Azure Maps https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/services/azure-maps/
simplezeal··on Google Photos will lock some new features behind a paywall
Hoping for a day when I can pay for consumer version on gmail without ads. Already pay for YouTube and extended storage for photos.

simplezeal··on Microsoft: Cloud services demand up, prioritization rules in place
Compromise is to turn on video only when talking. Also works as #raisehand ..
simplezeal··on PBS Launching Streaming Service on Amazon Prime
I really hope PBS is working with other service providers (Apple? Google Play?) to bring the same programming. I don't want to pay Amazon tax (additional $10 per month prime fees) to be able to use this service.
simplezeal··on Facebook will shut down its controversial market research app for iOS
There is an assumption that developers "knew" how the code being implemented is going to be used. In a big company like FB, as an IC or team, the context under which code gets developed may be far removed from how it gets used. I can imagine a scenario where someone developed this code for testing FB app on devices, another engineer had similar need and morphed it into different product etc.

The solution to these problems is oversight from security, compliance, and privacy on all systems dealing with consumer information, and having privacy education for all employees on regular basis. GDPR is a step in that direction.

simplezeal··on AT&T raises most customers' fees by $1.23, adding $800M revenue
From my time with prepaid on T-mobile, most of these fees are imposed on post-paid connections.

I am seriously considering AT&T prepaid to avoid these gimmick fees. for 2 lines 50/mo plan i'll end up paying 70 - https://www.att.com/prepaid/plans.html

simplezeal··on Pegatron likely to land new MacBook orders from Apple, say sources
I can see low cost ARM based MacBook (savings from not paying Intel tax) marketed as long battery high end hardware replacement for ChromeBooks. It can still run modified OS X which allows for Mac App Store apps (MS Office just announced Mac App Store support), browser, email etc. Throw in native iTunes/iPhoto with cloud storage and you got a pretty nice offering.
simplezeal··on Reasons not to use Facebook
Don’t forget that as you use your machine for visiting other sites, your usage is being tracked using Advertising ID that most platforms expose. You don’t need the same browser, the ID is stable until you reset it.
simplezeal··on Windows 10 China Government Edition allows to control encryption and telemetry
From the article ... "The Windows 10 China Government Edition is based on Windows 10 Enterprise Edition".

AFAIK the option to control telemetry was always there for Enterprise Edition.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/configuration/confi...

"IT pros can use various methods, including Group Policy and Mobile Device Management (MDM), to choose a telemetry level. If you’re using Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education, or Windows Server 2016, the Security telemetry level is available when managing the policy. Setting the telemetry level through policy overrides users’ choices."

simplezeal··on Google to own $750 million Lenovo stake after Motorola deal closes: HK exchange
Apple, recently Microsoft and now Google are either making or stake holders in PC manufacturing. So much for post-PC era.
simplezeal··on Marissa Mayer: An Unauthorized Biography
Personally I find it amusing that she mixed personal life with work - her dating Larry and all.

You lose a lot of respect from peers if you are rising fast and they find out a powerful person has soft spot for him/her.

I am wondering if that had something to do with so many Googlers hating her. She was always pain to work with - office hours etc. What changed?

simplezeal··on Stop Working All Those Hours
I should add to that - not just results but quality of results. Software development is a tricky profession to measure for quality - outside of bug count (which may be heavily influenced by quality of testing) and code coverage numbers (those can miss some really nasty edge cases) the only thing you can measure is how long it takes to make change to existing code.

I have seen numerous cases where the person implementing the code is rewarded and next one comes along, and rewrites the code since first one is too hard to change. He gets rewarded too and cycle continues.

simplezeal··on SQL Server: High performance inserts
I agree with most of your points.

I have to give it to the author though for a genuine attempt at one of the important things when dealing with databases. There is lot of room for performance improvement in application code, before you start blaming the platform for not scaling.

simplezeal··on Microsoft Courier on iPad
Video went too fast for me, but the concepts looks good - ability to drop maps, contacts in notes, annotate documents? Ability to take handwritten and voice notes along with dropping web content.
simplezeal··on Netflix to lose Starz, its most valuable source of new movies
I have both. Roku has high wife acceptance factor, but apple tv has two killer features - YouTube and AirPlay.
simplezeal··on I'm a phony. Are you?

simplezeal··on Why doesn't every company buy developers the best hardware?
You should ask him to look into disk2vhd tool. Allows you to make VHD off a current set up which he can run on new machine as VM until he is comfortable with setting new machine per his requirements.
simplezeal··on Design patterns explained in Javascript
I have to say, it's refreshing to see a Readability like template being used on a web page - no clutter of ads, sidebars, and other distractions.

Great job!

simplezeal··on [dead]
Not to comment on your argument about Android, but the statement (in original article) definitely seems to me presumptuous. I stopped reading after that.
