Welcome to the club! I'm not sure if it's a good club to begin with, but at least the USA isn't alone with its current political status.
simook··on Google Cloud Console Incident
I'm interested in the root cause.

Console operations and architecture for HA is one of my current responsibilities. It's important to me that customers can depend on a functional, responsive, and stable console.

I think the console experience heavily influences the trust and overall customer experience of any service.

simook··on Why I hate the weekends (2017)
I haven't read the post yet, but I did read this comment and wanted to share some of my thoughts.

A real job can mean a lot of things to different people. For example, I consider my volunteer time as a board member at a non-profit organization to be a real job. Currently, It doesn't directly pay for my financial needs, but it pays in other ways.

I think that it's important to acknowledge, recognize, and respect people for who they are, and what they are experiencing.

The words we choose to use can have a significant impact.

I hope you enjoy your weekend!

simook··on Ask HN: What company environment has enabled your best work?
Your future self might appreciate just a little documentation. I recently learned that lesson after taking a year off from side projects. I’m currently having to retrace my steps because I no longer remember any details.

simook··on Ask HN: How are you getting through (and back from) burning out?
Burnout is a complicated topic, but I think we can all agree that it has real mental health effects. Trying to solve for the symptoms is one approach, but it’s also important to understand why it happened in the first place. What motivated someone to work themselves to a state of burning out?

A therapist is one approach, and in my experience they will help uncover some of the inner workings to help you explore and understand maybe why it happened in the first place. They are like our rubber duck to help us debug ourselves. And with that information, we can start to make the necessary changes in our personal and professional lives so that we maintain a healthy work-life balance.

simook··on Ask HN: How are you getting through (and back from) burning out?
I started seeing a therapist. They have helped me to learn more about myself and now I can better recognize my mental state.
simook··on If San Francisco is so great, why is everyone I love leaving?
As exciting as this is to see. It's hard for me to watch Portland change into a different city. I think the hardest aspect right now is the amount of trash that is being thrown aside in the roads, parks, and greenways. I was born and raised in this area and it's been tough for me to witness this beautiful city being treated that way. If you want to help clean up Portland, I strongly recommend volunteering with the SOLVE Organization.

I hope Portland will continue to be a beautiful city for my children to enjoy.

Very well could be. But it's certain that any cheaply made item is going to have poor working conditions, poor quality of life, and poor return on investment. I think we need to define what I mean by "expensive" because, for example, an iPhone can be thought of as expensive purchase but I honestly think it is too cheap. What I mean is that we need to evaluate the total cost of ownership. "Is this item that I'm buying made in a way that benefits humanity?"

For example, the LED light bulb market had such promise but now is flooded with cheaply made bulbs that are made with components that will fail before they should. The pollution cost to mine all the rare earth materials that go into these light bulbs are not reflected in their final cost, and in my opinion, they should be.

simook··on GoPro quits the drone business
True, but I still bring it up because it's a conversation worth having. And if one more person starts to realize the harm in buying cheap goods from China, hopefully we will eventually change this trend. I for one try to only buy goods that are made locally to me. Sure, it will cost more but I look at it as an investment.
simook··on GoPro quits the drone business
Those cheap chinese knock offs are made with cheap components and I have no doubts that the factory conditions are terrible. I wouldn't be suprised if the supply chain for these cheap cameras will be shutdown with China finally being serious about pollution.

Pesticides are not the only solution to deal with pests, it's maybe the easiest to understand but is also the worst human made solution. Nature has solved this a problem long time ago through diversity of plants, insects, and animals.
simook··on Only 60 Years of Farming Left If Soil Degradation Continues
I encourage you to do a little more research on this. Bad and good bacteria exists in this world regardless of how Human's try to control it. Waste processing plants use a combination of bacteria and UV to treat wastewater. That process is very similar to what nature does with animal and human waste.

However, moving human waste is a tough problem and requires substantial resources (fossil fuels, infrastructure, electricity, etc...) and the act of moving it is usually the source of contamination.

I think it's completely valid and beneficial to compost human waste, but that needs to be done on a local/individual scale.

simook··on YouTube Demonetization Screenshot Leaks and Secret YouTube Meeting
I would like to start an experiment where I create my own youtube/vimeo like website and run it as bootstraped buisness. For me, the hardest challenge would be getting viewers to watch the content. But the technicial side would be trivial.
simook··on YouTube Demonetization Screenshot Leaks and Secret YouTube Meeting
Why would million of subscribers bankrupt someone? I work in the industry building video software that would allow anyone to create their own personalozed video on demand or live streaming service. I havent ran the numbers myself, but the cost to provide a youtube like experience is not that expensive. I would be happy to run the numbers if we could determine how many minutes a single subsriber would watch in a month.

Going faster does not improve the speed of traffic. Matter of fact if everyone drove the actual speed limit we wouldn't have such a bad trafffic problem. Our infranstructure was designed to handle a range of speeds, primarily for the timing systems. When people drive outside those limits, that's when traffic patterns become unpredictable and/or unmanageable.

The slow drivers are no different than the fast drivers. Both of you are outliers and aren't easy to calculate in the timing algorithms.

imo, people are selfish when it comes to driving.

simook··on AWS Media Services – Process, Store, and Monetize Cloud-Based Video
In my opinion, that's one of the goals for AWS Media Services.

You could think of them as Lego bricks, combine a couple of them together and you could easily have a "broadcast grade" workflow for your content.

But back to your original question, currently MediaLive does not say it supports RTMP outputs (make sure to request it as a feature!) so using it as a "one-to-many" would require another lego brick to convert UDP to RTMP.

However, once support has been added for RTMP outputs, you could live stream to any platform (Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram) that supports the RTMP protocol.

The neat thing about MediaLive is that it allows you to use audio, video, or caption tracks. So for example, if you had a single source that had platform-specific tracks, you could create outputs for each platform and use the corresponding track to create curated content.

But, that's just one example of hundreds that is possible with AWS Media Services.
