simonpure··on Ask HN: What are the best bio-hacking tips for programmers?
A standing desk.

It's been life changing to combat my back pain, feel tired in the evening, shift around regularly, grab something to drink etc.

Stretching.

Especially the hamstrings and upper body given the long hours on the keyboard.

They can both be combined easily and are also a great fit for hammock driven development.

simonpure··on Ask HN: What are the best bio-hacking tips for programmers?
+1 on vitamin d deficiency in general.

Now, I'm not a doctor, but my understanding is that most vitamin d can't be absorbed through the intake of pills.

The solution is to expose yourself to 15min sunlight daily, preferably with short sleeves and pants so you have more skin surface to absorb it.

On the plus side, it's cheaper and you get some fresh air!

simonpure··on Ask HN: Do VCs often do this?
Providing services to other portfolio companies or otherwise related partners in of itself is not a bad practice, but can have many benefits for all parties involved.

Having said that, it should always be the CEOs and senior managements responsibility to do their due diligence to evaluate any service their business depends on so heavily and regularly renegotiate.

There's a good reason a Apple, Snap, Netflix etc. are using both Google and Amazon's cloud services to be in a position to leverage their relationship to negotiate better deals and not be dependent on a single provider.

simonpure··on Ask HN: Do I have to lie to get first tech job?
If you have friends who are able to hire you, work with them to proove you are capable to perform the job and are a good fit.

Offer to implement a feature for free or meaningfully contribute to one of their open source projects to demonstrate you have the technical chops to be a productive member of their team.

Also, besides technical skills, you have to be a good cultural fit. Make sure you do your homework what they are looking for in candidates more generally.

simonpure··on Ask HN: Youngest possible age to start learning how to code?
I personally got hooked at age 7 after my dad showed me how to draw circles in BASIC.

I don't think it's so much about a specific age, but to help stimulate a kid's imagination what's possible with a general purpose programming language.

simonpure··on Ask HN: How have you done internationalization (i18n)?
Google has some great resources including a few open source projects [0]. I don't use any of them directly, but they have been a great inspiration to learn from their epxerience.

[0] https://developers.google.com/international/

Disclaimer: I used to work on i18n and i10n for Google as a country specialist back in the days.

simonpure··on Ask HN: How do you come up with ideas for a website/product?
Another way of looking at it is to focus on the process and see the idea as starting point.

Don't be discouraged if there's an existing solution as you are likely to end up in a very different place from where you started.

simonpure··on Ask HN: Turning 40 soon – seeking personal and professional life advice
Historically, we're underestimating technological progress. What seems impossible with today's standards may be the new normal tomorrow.

Having said that, the specific number is less relevant and it's more about putting things into perspective.

If you believe you won't live past 80, 40 is half of your life and you may think it's too late to start something new. However, if you up the number to 130, then 40 seems like just the beginning.

simonpure··on Ask HN: Turning 40 soon – seeking personal and professional life advice
Time is your most valuable resource - always pay attention where you spend it and with whom.

Optimize for the long haul, never take shortcuts.

Your goal is to keep mind, body and soul in balance - everything else will work itself out and not worth worrying about.

I'm 39 and plan for a life span of at least 130 but try to live every day like I'm going to die tomorrow - context matters and helps bring perspective.

simonpure··on Ask HN: Clever ways to run a media-heavy website on a budget?
I'd also consider serving the files from your broadband connection and use various caching techniques to limit hitting your home server such as IPFS, Cloudflair, browser caching and other p2p approaches.

Alternatively, if it's video, you could also upload it to YouTube as unlisted and serve it embedded in your page.

We could provide better recommendations if you share more details what the type of data is and how it's intended to be used.

simonpure··on Ask HN: My Docker image just hit 1M+ pulls. What now?
Some ideas -

- add a message to the start script encouraging users to sign up for a mailing list if they want to receive updates and hope it shows up in the logs

- generalize the ability to auto-update a public docker image as a service

simonpure··on Anomaly Updates
At this stage of the investigation, preliminary review of the data and debris suggests that a large breach in the cryogenic helium system of the second stage liquid oxygen tank took place.

Pending the results of the investigation, we anticipate returning to flight as early as the November timeframe.

simonpure··on Tonic is now RunKit, a part of Stripe
Congrats! First time I'm hearing about Tonic/RunKit. The demo video looks very promising.

Can you elaborate on your roadmap and what parts of the stack - if any - you are planning on open sourcing?

Thanks!

simonpure··on Ask HN: Middle way between being the boss and being a slave?
I recommend freelancing or contracting. This way you can choose your clients, set your own terms and generally get paid for deliverables as opposed to being micromanaged how to do your work.

Also, I'd suggest you also try to understand why people are asking you to do certain things and if you have a better way of accomplishing the same goal, try to explain it.

I personally have strong opinions, but I've learned that there is not one true way of doing something, but it's all about tradeoffs. Focusing on tradeoffs usually makes for more productive conversation.

Good luck with your project!

simonpure··on Ask HN: Are new posts getting less frequent on HN?
I've been experimenting with an alternative ranking based on activity (score + comments per hour) and found some interesting stories because of it.

I did notice there's definitely a very long tail of stories that get little attention.

Feel free to play with it and provide some feedback -

simonpure··on Ask HN: Which language(s) should I learn to do one-man projects and earn money?
I'd start with what you already know. Depending on the project, different languages will be a better fit.

If you are just starting out and are focusing on web development, I'd recommend JavaScript since all you need to get going is a browser and a text editor.

simonpure··on Ask HN: Most excited during a work crisis?
I personally wouldn't call this a guilty pleasure but a personal preference.

Some people thrive under pressure and are able to produce their best results. It sounds like you're enjoying such situations so I encourage you to find a role at your current employer or elsewhere that values it - maybe a DevOps role where you are responsible for running a mission critical service might be a good fit.

simonpure··on Invention by a British student could save millions of lives across the world
tl;dr

The device maintains a steady two to eight degrees for 30 days. It works by heating ammonia and water to create ammonia vapours, which are then released into its main chamber when cooling is needed.

simonpure··on Show HN: Land conservation through crowdfunding
This seems like a great initiative and increasingly important for future generations - congrats!

I noticed there's a disproportionate number of Australian owners. Any insight why that is?

simonpure··on Ask HN: In what ways could the “HN frontpage” algorithm be improved?
Thanks for letting me know. Safari doesn't like the use of const yet and not using a transpiler at the moment. Should be fixed, but will clean it up properly.
simonpure··on Ask HN: In what ways could the “HN frontpage” algorithm be improved?
I'm taking # of votes plus comments over time since submission as a proxy for activity per hour.

This is still a pretty quick hack at the moment, but I've enjoyed using it over the past few weeks.

What I'm focused on at the moment is playing with alerts when a story starts trending. I really enjoy knowing about the latest topics but would like to avoid excessively refreshing the page :)

simonpure··on Ask HN: In what ways could the “HN frontpage” algorithm be improved?
I've been experimenting with an alternative ranking based on activity (votes and comments) [0]. I've definitely found some interesting stories because of it.

simonpure··on Ask HN: Should I leave my startup?
From your additional comments, it sounds like the CEO has access to money from his personal wealth, but is not willing to put it to work at his own company. This sounds like he has not enough confidence in his own abilities and the team to make a decent ROI. I consider this a big red flag.

I'd recommend reconnecting with the 10 engineers who already left to see if they can help you line up a new gig. Once you have an option, you can have a conversation with your CEO and try to negotiate a better offer that would convince you to stay. If he fails to do so, he at least had a chance and you will find out quickly how much you are worth to him.

Good luck!
