sikhnerd··on Beautiful sci-fi GIFs
In the past on os x I've converted them to a movie and used SaveHollywood[1] to make them into a screensaver, then used the trick outlined here[2] to make that into the active desktop background. I stopped because it used quite a bit of cpu/battery. I remember doing the same trick on linux many years ago using xwinwrap on gnome.

I second this. I recently made a simple command line tool for my coworkers using several of the same libraries used here, but this is so much cleaner and better organized than what I threw together. Definitely will be reviewing this codebase for inspiration when I get a chance to refactor.
sikhnerd··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2016)
Pyze | Senior Backend Developers | Redwood City, CA | Full-Time | Onsite, VISA considered

We are a growing and fully funded company that just launched out of Beta this week and seek to hire our seventh employee. We're looking for someone who cares about making a huge impact in making mobile app publishers create and grow successful and thriving mobile app businesses. We've built a business intelligence platform for mobile apps that automates and personalizes user engagement to drive stickiness and usage.

We work with Java, Scala, Kafka, Storm, Spark, Cassandra, Redis and much more. Experience in these areas is a big plus.

We are looking for backend engineers with big data and scaling experience, with some familiarity with our toolset. Nice to have experience working with one or more of the following: R, Java-ML, etc.

You can check out our jobs page http://pyze.com/jobs-at-pyze.html or reach out to me directly muntek+hn @ pyze.com

sikhnerd··on Pyze – Growth Intelligence for Every App
Hey guys, super excited to finally post this as we just launched. We provide a BI suite for mobile analytics that is really easy to use, would love any feedback on the product or anything else.
sikhnerd··on iTerm2 Version 3 Now in Beta
Mirroring my sibling comment here, but thanks for the detailed note on how to get rid of the bright white title bar :)

As far as resizing goes, I would suggest using one of the many pseudo tiling window managers available on mac. I strongly recommend spectacle [1]

Thanks so much for pointing out the ability to hide the titlebar entirely, as I have the same pet peeve :)

I would suggest using one of the many pseudo tiling window managers to resize your windows so you don't have that problem. I strongly recommend spectacle [1]

sikhnerd··on Persistent IRC Considered Harmful
Pretty much disagree entirely. I've found being in these open source channels 24/7 extremely valuable as have many others. Seems like the author is railing against the fact that dealing with notifications may be difficult, but luckily most IRC clients give you a ton of options on how/what/when you should receive them. I think even if you turn notifications off entirely, you will find some value to being in the same places as the developers of the software you use.

sikhnerd··on Gping: Ping, but with a graph
I've been using a similar script for years and found it very useful - http://denilson.sa.nom.br/prettyping/
sikhnerd··on A9ChipSource: small open-source iOS utility to identify A9 foundry
I was curious what the readme was referring to, this[0] apparently is the macrumors post and tool[1] this is a response to.

sikhnerd··on The Sikhs who saved Parmesan
Here[1] is a nice 5-minute 2008 video on the same topic. And a 2011 NYT article[2] also points out some of the challenges they have faced. This 2012 article [3] has some nice pictures

sikhnerd··on Bing Webmaster Tools does not support HTTPS SNI
Do you have any data supporting that? I genuinely was under the impression that the number of sites actively using SNI was quite low.
sikhnerd··on Tmux 2.0 released
Does not appear to be a session-breaking update. I just updated with no ill effects.
sikhnerd··on Unpacking CCTV Firmware
Zoneminder[1] is FOSS and pretty good, it's not pretty but very much gets the job done, and is fairly hackable.

This looks great!

FYI, the demo site link is broken (missing a : )

sikhnerd··on Ask HN: How do you analyze logs?
awk, grep, sed, ag, cut, sort, etc for most of the stuff. Elasticsearch, logstash, kibana for more complex queries
sikhnerd··on Ask HN: Can we talk about FreeBSD vs. Linux?
Freebsd has this Quickstart Guide for Linux Users[1] which is somewhat helpful.

sikhnerd··on King of click: the story of the greatest keyboard ever made
The Model M is absolutely fantastic, if you've never used a proper mechanical keyboard you really should. I'm significantly more productive coding or general writing on my MX-Blues then the chiclet keyboard of my Macbook - it's a huge difference.
sikhnerd··on Show HN: KeyBox – A multi-terminal web-based SSH console
Looks really cool and well done, though I'm failing to see the value this adds vs using standard user access controls and a regular old terminal multiplexer like tmux or screen.

You can even get the same usage model very easy by doing what a lot of companies do by throwing up a 'jumpbox' that all users log in to. They then log into whichever server they need from that session. You can do both PAM based, and network based ACL's and it's fairly easy to manage through sudo etc.

sikhnerd··on Show HN: A mostly complete 2014 "Tools of the Trade"
Created a PR for a basic table of contents, I can see this being pretty useful when the need arises.
sikhnerd··on Show HN: Learn to code by being coached by an experienced developer for free
Doesn't appear that you can actually sign up to learn, keep getting error that I have not selected a language tag
sikhnerd··on Hydra: A lightweight OS X window manager with a powerful API
For me, the bigger idea to tiling wm, or these psuedo tiling wm is that I never have to use mouse to move/resize/shuffle windows. I too initially missed that feature when I first started using a tiling wm, but that quickly went away as soon as I had the keyboard shortcuts memorized.
sikhnerd··on Shell pipes and in-place insanity
This is the expected behavior of pipes[0]. A quick look at Lists [1] clears up how you can control this a little better (+Job Control). jamesdutc also linked to sponge, which may suit your usecase as well.

sikhnerd··on Dubai 45 gigapixels
Beautiful, surprisingly few people in the shot. Since I only found 3-4 in a few minutes, I guess it's hot outside :)
sikhnerd··on Mac keyboard shortcuts
Highly relevant if you're interested in learning these, or are bad about remember all the random keys in disparate apps is CheatSheet: http://www.cheatsheetapp.com/CheatSheet/

Pop up that shows available keyboard shorcuts (activated by a keyboard shortcut of course :)

sikhnerd··on Mail Pilot App
Unfortunately the fact that it doesn't appear to store any mail locally (and some appstore reviews back this up) is a non-starter for anyone (including me) who ever wants to do email on a poor connection.

I've been using Airmail [1] to do essentially everything you can do with Mailpilot, though with not as clean a UI, with pretty good success.
