siidooloo··on So Close
Yeah, based on the video I think they got the market for this wrong. I can easily imagine businesses wanting something like this. I don't know anyone who would be running to get it at home.
siidooloo··on John Lasseter taking a leave of absence amid reports of inappropriate behavior
Why does it matter who initiated it? The correct answer either way is To not get sexually involved with subordinates. There is no moral ambiguity here. It is wrong to abuse a position of power.
siidooloo··on Xi's Key Milestone Positions Him to Rule China for Decades
In the past they could change power peacefully because the outgoing leader didn't fear reprisals from the incoming one. But if it is accepted practice to attack others under the guise of 'corruption', then the outgoing leader always has to fear being purged. Can Xi trust that the next guy won't be able to find some excuse to purge him?
siidooloo··on Goodbye Uncanny Valley [video]
People are situationally sceptical. We tend to be sceptical of things we already don't believe, but not of things we do. We can expect people now and in the future to question an images authenticity if it questions something they want to believe.
siidooloo··on MacOS High Sierra
Notifications are on the top right of the screen. They don't cover the active window? It sounds like something strange is wrong with your system.

I also never get notifications about updates. No workarounds needed.

siidooloo··on How I wish Sundar Pichai had responded to James Damore's memo about diversity
So people who disagree with you "haven't hit certain developmental milestones"?
siidooloo··on Dell 38 inch UltraSharp monitor
Why do people want curved displays. They get glare from evey angle, and the image is distorted.
siidooloo··on A Critical Analysis of the Subscription Economy
Look at the upgrades they are offering on that page. No one would pay for that as a stand alone upgrade. For the last 5 years they've been adding gimmicks.

A real update would be better live editing. When they launched lightroom I was hopefull some of that workflow would make it to Photoshop. Nope. When they bought speedgrade I thought "amazing, I hope they make a print version." Nope.

The same is true for Illustrator, inDesign and Acrobat Pro.

siidooloo··on A Critical Analysis of the Subscription Economy
The value really depends on what you need. Most people don't need the whole create suite. If all you need are the photo/design/print apps you really get screwed by the subscription.

Photoshop Illustrator and inDesign haven't had upgrade worthy releases since like CS5. Acrobat Pro seems to be getting worse.

siidooloo··on I shared my toddler's hospital bill on Twitter
Maybe you didn't read the story but people were sending her death threats.
siidooloo··on How Brian Eno managed to piss in Marcel Duchamp’s famous urinal
Yes, when people ask "is it art?" they're ussally actually asking is it good art? Who knows?

It's part of something broader. A lot of people seem to need whatever they enjoy (science fiction / comic / video games) to get a seal of approval as great and serious art. They complain that people don't respect the art they enjoy. Of course, when someone tries to do something serious in the genre/medium they complain that it is the wrong kind of whatever. You're supposed to respect first-person-shooters and space opera as great art. They don't want you to make anything that actually tries to be literary.

siidooloo··on China's bloggers, filmmakers feel chill of internet crackdown
? How is anti-nationalism synonymous with Nazism? The Nazis were the exact opposite. They were ultra-nationalists.
siidooloo··on The $100B per year back pain industry is mostly a hoax
"Electromagnetic pollution"? Are you seriously arguing wifi causes cancer?
siidooloo··on Dissolving the Fermi Paradox [pdf]
This assumes von Neumann replicators are acheivable, and if they are, that any species capable of creating them would want to.
siidooloo··on The Map That Popularized the Word ‘Gerrymander’
Actually, if it weren't for gerrymandering these districts would probably be more politically homogenous. The point of the gerrymandering is to split up a district that would have had a majority of some party. Now instead of having a majority in one district, they have a minority in several districts.
siidooloo··on Once a Model City, Hong Kong Is in Trouble
Until recently you could cross the border without a passport. It was pretty carefree. Why should'nt it be?
siidooloo··on Zillow forces McMansion Hell to delete posts
I think a lot of people here are confusing her criticisms of McMansions with criticisms of mansions in general.
siidooloo··on Zillow forces McMansion Hell to delete posts
McMansions more resemble the car Homer Simpson designed than a 1959 Cadillac. One of the main distinguishing features of a McMansion is that it doesn't have any unified design aesthetic. They just glom a bunch of random things together.
siidooloo··on People killed by terrorism per year in western Europe 1970-2015
...and a lot pf those homegrown terrorists form the 70/80s were funded by the Soviets. Notice how in the charts the rates drop off after the cold war ends. The same thing happened in Latin America. Presumably this could be a clue on how to solve current problems.
siidooloo··on China Can’t Sustain Its Debt-Fueled Binge, Moody’s Says
The US economy will see a series of booms and busts. As all economies will. As will China's. When? Who knows? But I wouldn't be the one to bet on never.
siidooloo··on E. B. White, the Art of the Essay No. 1 (1969)
Adding to that ... I'm sure the'll do 'The Art of Memes' with someone in 20 years. But not yet. How many late career tweeters and bloggers do we have?
siidooloo··on E. B. White, the Art of the Essay No. 1 (1969)
Can you name any bloggers or tweeters you think they should interview?

Remember this is the Paris review. They arn't really looking for pop culture stuff. They interview people people who already have some level of academic acceptablitiy. They've done them with R. Crumb and Chris Ware. I'm sure they'd interview a blogger if they found someone they were interested in.

siidooloo··on The Town of Innisfil partners with Uber for transit instead of buses
The VA hospitals arn't the only government run healthcare in the world. Some others are good, some are bad. As with everything reducing the options down to two political choices just seems to makeveryone stop thinking about creative ways to solve problems.

The uber thing is a good choice for Innisfil. They wouldn't have the money to roll their own ride share, and they can't afford the infrastructure to create a bus system.

siidooloo··on The Origins of the American Military Coup of 2012 (1992) [pdf]
The problem with this theory is that crime rate went down across the Western world at the same time. Whatever explaination you come up with has to work for the U.S. and Japan, and France, etc. Maybe changing abortion laws are part of it, but it must be some confluence of things combined.
siidooloo··on Netflix expected to spend over $6B on original and acquired programming in 2017
HDR in monitors means (a) very high white point (800 to 1000 nits) and a very low black point. It lets you see more detail in the highs and lows. Its kind of replaced 3d as the new buzzword to sell super high-end monitors.
siidooloo··on The Republican Waterloo
David Frum isn't a liberal.
siidooloo··on iPad 9.7‑inch
Yes, Wacom must have realized this as the newest Cintiqs finally solved the biggest problem they always had: paralax.
siidooloo··on How To Write With Style (1999)
I think authors from the 50’s/60’s/70’s often wrote shorter books because they worked their way up writing for pulps and magazines. After the market for that stuff dried up authors seemed to start writing more open ended stories.
siidooloo··on New wheat disease threatens Europe’s crops
The argument isn't GMO vs organic. Non GMO isn't necessarily organic. Someone could vey easily be against both.
siidooloo··on During WWII, U.S. Saw Italian-Americans as a Threat to Homeland Security
People's answers to things like the trolly problem says we do have different morals and the way you frame a question has a lot to do with what we think is moral.
