signalsignal··on Nobody Ever Got Rich Working for Somebody Else. #horseshit
People who live off the grid also live off the grid during a disaster such as Japan's tsunami. So there is the same trouble from lacking during a disaster as there is in this independence you connect to riches.
signalsignal··on Python: A Simple Step-by-Step SQLite Tutorial
Is it possible to run python in a script like LUA runs in an iOS app? I think myself it may be possible, but I don't see any examples.
signalsignal··on Instagram? Zynga? There's a lot big minds chasing small ideas
Wow, current.com really hates Mitt Romney.
signalsignal··on A One Man Army On a Mission To Destroy The Cyberlocker Market
Interesting article. I didn't realize how publishing companies like Megaupload made money, but thinking of them as "FileLockers" makes sense.
signalsignal··on Corrupt App Store binaries crashing on launch
Funnily enough, updates can still be received if an app is removed from sale or even deleted by the developer.
signalsignal··on Beautiful Windows 8 concept
Reminds me of LiteStep.
signalsignal··on Ask HN: Linux on a notebook
If you have no ideological preference then use OS X. It uses a real unix and XQuartz is very up to date. You can use Homebrew, but I had some major issues with in the past so YMMV. I personally use MacPorts as Fink is too out of date as I have a 500gb hd and I prefer the 3rd party software to have separate dependencies from the core Mac system software.
signalsignal··on Ask HN: Going from programmer to engineer
The best resource is building something you consider useful. Start small and make it a personal project. Don't even think about making money on it or else you will destroy the enjoyment of making it. It doesn't have be long term, in fact it is better if you don't plan on maintaining it but instead build it and evolve it with every iteration.
signalsignal··on Apple's "benign dictatorship" of the App Store leaves users, devs in the dark.
They should open-source the app. That would be the ultimate freedom.
signalsignal··on Top Technologies Used By YC Companies
Also, noone uses Java and only one company uses Perl. Interesting or misleading? You be the judge.
signalsignal··on A World Without Copyright
These kinds of articles need more attention on HN. Copyrights have consistently been proven to be detrimental both the artist and the consumer.
signalsignal··on Family robbed after cash photo posted to Facebook
Good old fashioned social engineering? The attackers already knew where she was going to be from other location based apps or just investigating the address of the grandmother. Also, the attackers could have access to the daughter and she is just pretending not to know anything to help the grandmother file an insurance claim.
signalsignal··on All you need is e-mail, e-mail. E-mail is all you need.
Facebook is a productivity killer, but it does POP email as well.
signalsignal··on The Once and Future Visual Programming Environment
> Do the (thing above) and come back when you finish it.

Do you even know what advice(1) is? That's not advice as I understand it. That's an order. You're giving orders to a complete strange on a web forum. Think about the intelligence behind that for a second.

My comment on this site was referencing the comment by Paul Topping(2) on the TC link. His opinion, and one I agree with, is that Visual Languages become too cumbersome for anything but small projects, and my example is using Visual Programming for layout. The XIB's are XML in XCode.

signalsignal··on Apple rejected Flattr… and it’s not the end
I think Instacast, and maybe Flattr as well, should boycott Apple and instead focus on the Android platforms starting with Google Play and Amazon's Appstore. Otherwise they are helping to perpetuate and even reward this kind of behavior.

Does anyone have the link for Instacast for Android?

signalsignal··on The Once and Future Visual Programming Environment
No. ;)

Edit: I just got down voted for replying "No." to a comment on HN. Hah! That's this site in a nutshell for you.

signalsignal··on Facebook Tries Again on a Smartphone
> ... then restrict access of other smartphones to it's platforms and APIs (so that they become a crippled shell) while adding features that were exclusive to the FB phone.

Nothing subtle about that.

signalsignal··on Facebook Tries Again on a Smartphone
Sorry, but even Apple, who develops its own operating system, didn't develop it own system from scratch(1). The iOS platform is an adaption of this as well, meaning it is not a unique system.

One of the challenges of creating a startup is building a business which not only provides solutions/products to customers, but also works with other businesses. Attempting to cripple competitors platforms will quickly and easily be interpreted as monopolistic behavior(2).

signalsignal··on The Once and Future Visual Programming Environment
There are plenty of Visual Programming paradigms in development today. The XCode Interface Builder, and Visual Studio's stuff as well, handle the tricky layout and placements before it is converted to text for the compiler. But the rest of the development is done through purely textual coding as the visual paradigm becomes exponentially more difficult to manage as the project "grows". So what happens is a hybrid.
signalsignal··on "Ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently"
Same here, but with an even older computer: AMD 64 4000+ with compiz turned off and running LXDE on the desktop. No issues so far and I haven't had any crashes at all.
signalsignal··on Things That Should Trouble Apple
I thought that this was one of the worst written articles about Apple I have ever read. It was linked from Daring Fireball for some reason. Why should Apple do CMS? I don't understand where to even begin: IWork, iCloud, iWeb, mobile me, etc. must have never existed or just disappeared. Also, when did iTunes die? Did people just last night stop buying music, apps, ebooks, and movies from Apple? When did Apple's incredibly profitable ecommerce solution stop making sales? I should just stop here. If you haven't read the article, consider not wasting your time. It is not just without merit or basis, it doesn't even contain any interesting links, but I can't down vote links in HN, so sorry.
signalsignal··on Meet Apple's Secret Feline App Tester
I develop iOS apps, and I don't stalk my users. I just assumed that was something everyone practiced, allowing a right to privacy.
signalsignal··on Portable Ideas
Everyone is some kind of fundamentalist, but people keep their ideas to themselves to keep an even keel because inexperience in expression tends towards bad outcomes. I have no scientific evidence for this, but this is my amateur reasoning in observing the personal growth in others.
signalsignal··on If the IRS had discovered the quadratic formula...
Yes. The IRS is in the money refunding business.
signalsignal··on Microsoft buys Netscape patents from AOL as part of $1 billion deal
Here comes the leviathan. I don't know what effect this will eventually have on Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, but I'm certain it will be good.
signalsignal··on The App Store, 3 years later: Apple just doesn't care.
I noticed the problem with iTunes connect has been fixed. It is actually much, much better than it used to be.
signalsignal··on The nameless "they" and the Facebook / job interview trend that isn't a trend
I'd say that its not a constant fear to most people, it is more of a aggravation or annoyance. In my experience most people don't share too many personal details online even with their closest friend network.

I do have one question, why does the author use BOLD text in the article in such a haphazard manner?

signalsignal··on Save the Internet from the US
To be fair to Avaaz.org, this isn't about "crazy Americans" this is about the opportunity connect to a populist narrative, "Save the Internet from the US". In this way non-profits, NPO's, build a donation base using carefully controlled press releases and volunteers world-wide to connect their entity, the NPO, to helping troubled communities.

Right now they are building a mailing list to capitalize on global anti-Americanism. Understandably, they may not use the mailing exclusively to solicit donations, and will most likely sell it to third-parties, "We may share some of your personal information with certain affiliated groups." It all depends on what they consider more important at the moment, the privacy of the volunteers (anyone who gave their email address/tel #), or the helping the greater good of their causes.

signalsignal··on I’ve Read Every Privacy Policy on the Internet— This is What I’ve Learned
Not really. The problem is that this is a press release without the traditional "experts say" part, which ruins the persuasiveness of the interpretation. So you got left behind.
