sigmonsays··on Git-cliff – Generate changelog from the Git history
this is a great tool, I dont think it replaces maintaining a proper changelog but it definitely helps track what is added to each release.

I think there should be both a generated changelog and an official changelog when a release is made.

sigmonsays··on Gavin Newsom wants to take smartphones out of schools
how do you address the source of the problem?

Isn't removing cell phones during school use a step in the right direction?

sigmonsays··on Author Clock: a novel way to tell time
Ooooof, that price tag though $200 or $350

I can build this myself, thanks for the idea!

sigmonsays··on DeGoogling 2024: Replacing Photos, Gmail, and Search
Very similar experiences

-- I switched off google photos to photoprism and syncthing -- Android -> GrapheneOS as well -- Linux desktop, i3 window manager. I went from ubuntu to nixos -- Wireguard VPN server hosted remotely -- remote git server / self hosted gitea -- gmail to fastmail

There is no more problems to solve, everything just works...

sigmonsays··on Within 2 years, 90% of organizations will suffer a critical tech skills shortage
who says we need AI ?
sigmonsays··on ht: Headless Terminal
i dont see any way of actually typing key presses, like modifiers.

This project looks pretty interesting, maybe i'm missing something.

sigmonsays··on Show HN: I built a backend so simple that it fits in a YAML file
do we really need more yaml?

This is insane to me.

sigmonsays··on Eradicating N+1s: The Two-Phase Data Load and Render Pattern in Go
everything about this screams wtf to me

engineering around deficiencies sometimes yields interesting results but this isn't one of them.

I'd say this code is spaghetti.

sigmonsays··on DNS glitch that threatened Internet stability fixed; cause remains unclear
clickbait headline
sigmonsays··on Zoraxy: Open-Source, All in one homelab network routing solution
it's ok, he makes himself look amateur
sigmonsays··on DuckDuckGo was down
maybe it's time to centralize crawlers and search data, making it publicly available to anyone willing to process it.

Not only would that reduce crawler traffic on websites to a single crawler entity it would make page data available for any indexer.

The idea that one company owns this data is kind of silly, it should be a coalition or a group of companies working together...

sigmonsays··on Zoraxy: Open-Source, All in one homelab network routing solution
we can't use "network routing" here to mean reverse proxy

These are separate things.

sigmonsays··on Android 15 improves standby battery life by up to 3 hours on some devices
did they say where the doze mode code lands?

AOSP? Google play services?

anyone know?

sigmonsays··on WD Releases New 6TB 2.5-Inch External Hard Drives – First Upgrade in Seven Years
you have to know what you're doing but i've always done linux software raid in a big PC case. You can load it up with drives and get a good power supply and you're set.

However, as I get older, I have less time for this stuff, so now I just pay for a synology.

sigmonsays··on Show HN: Pico: An open-source Ngrok alternative built for production traffic
how do you access http services locally?

is there a socks5 proxy or something I can configure in my web browser?

sigmonsays··on Do you need a dentist visit every 6 months? That filling? The data is weak
it seems hard to swallow this connection. How can oral health cause diabetes?
sigmonsays··on The File Filesystem (2021)
this is cool but it's fuse.. which is not so cool.

these days i reach for jq.. I've recently became interested in duckdb too.

Using a tool that is specialized for the format is usually more ideal than a generic one treating everything as files.

There is a lot in JSON that can't be represented in a flexible way as files and directories. For instance, what if a key has "/" in it.. What happens to lists and their order when you re-serialize How are hashes represented.. how can you tell if a parent is a object or a list.. inserting a item into a list is a ton of error prone renames.. the list goes on

(edited for formatting)

sigmonsays··on How to Use SQLite as a NoSQL Store
i do care

i care about how data is stored. There are limits to every data type and time spent on that in the beginning is time gained down the road

sigmonsays··on How to Use SQLite as a NoSQL Store
i really dont get this

the entire point of design time is to understand and design your data first.

sigmonsays··on Loading a trillion rows of weather data into TimescaleDB
where can I download the weather data?

Is it free or available if I sign up?

sigmonsays··on Control Linux based distros using hand gestures using OpenCV, GTK, Mediapipe
I love this, I can't tell if it's really true or not

I feel like a few gestures to lock or switch workspaces would be really ideal.

sigmonsays··on Rotz: Cross platform dotfile manager written in Rust
shameless plug, I wrote my own too called dotbot. I modeled it after the python version.

sigmonsays··on Show HN: FaviconHelper
doesn't load..
sigmonsays··on Stashpad launches Google Docs alternative you can use without any login
It needs to support some table of contents concept, pretty limited tbh. This looks like a very basic app. Who do they know at TC?
sigmonsays··on Show HN: Flox 1.0 – Open-source dev env as code with Nix
is this a fork of regular nix?

It seems like it might be because they have special instructions for nixos users.. kind of makes me affraid to install it tbh.

sigmonsays··on Show HN: Flox 1.0 – Open-source dev env as code with Nix
any support for a direnv driven workflow?
sigmonsays··on Show HN: I3wm Alt+Tab Workspace Switcher
i'm curious about OPs point of processing visual queues faster than specific keystrokes. The default config for workspaces is 1 through 9. How is it possible that it's harder to recall a specific workspace than process a visual queue?

None of that makes sense to me

sigmonsays··on JSON Canvas – An open file format for infinite canvas data
this seems like vendor lock in and hardly solves anything complicated
sigmonsays··on Show HN: Workout Tracker PWA
i track my workouts in simple note.

Why does it have to be so complicated?

Entering a workout should not be so difficult. This app requires clicking 5 times to add a workout.

sigmonsays··on Colony Graphs: Visualizing the Cloud (2014)
i've created graphs of arbitrary sizes and loaded the data into a graphing database for machines on the network.

by tracking network connections and configuration, you can build some really interesting graphs. It gets even more interesting if you overlay data, like roles or users.

With a graphing database it becomes easy to query and render N degree graphs of connected devices, pops, roles.

it'd definitely interesting approach to visualizing systems and networks and would recommend it to anyone
