shusaku··on America.gov
The whole industry is dealing with this now. You think current AI is not reliable enough for a task, so you augment it with know how to fix the problem, thoroughly test it, then decide to release it as a product. In the six months you took to do that, models improved enough that they work fine out of the box on your task.
shusaku··on You can defeat the Dream Devourer from Chrono Trigger using an int overflow
I feel like this is particularly amusing though because as I understand it this boss is not in the original game. So on a DS which is so powerful you should never have glitches due to such technical limitations, the developers flew insanely close to the sun.
shusaku··on AirPods 5
> They sounded better, they could hear better

Only tangential, but man I really hate sitting in zoom meetings with bad audio. It could be one person with a bad mic. But the worst is when you’re talking to people in a room somewhere and they simply don’t have the equipment. Combine that with a weekly dose of feedback…

shusaku··on iPhone Duo
I have a Chromebook with an ~11 inch screen. It’s basically the minimum size where a keyboard is still useable. I like it a lot, but it’s actually too big when I want to use it as a tablet.

I think this is the tension. Or maybe we just need to master one handed keyboards.

shusaku··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
Throw away accounts dropping political talking points deserve to be flagged.
shusaku··on GLM-5.3-Flash
Honestly I really like GLM 5.2 a lot for coding. There’s some weird failure modes in Anthropic’s models where it just does absolutely idiotic things.
shusaku··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
McDonald’s wants to go to investors and drop buzzwords like analytics and AI. The point of 515 pages is to inflate their stats about how valuable their data is
shusaku··on Plug-in solar is coming. Plug-in batteries should follow
As someone with a poor background in electrical engineering, this is really cool. It’s amazing that you guys can make something like this work.
shusaku··on Physicists Solve a Muon Mystery. Now, Old Results Don't Add Up
The more you know, the more you realize you don’t know to whom you should ascribe a quote.
shusaku··on A missing underscore sent innocent man to prison for 18 months
It all comes down to the jury, none of those things matter. The bigger issue here: he knew those messages weren’t him, so the lawyer should’ve gone full force to figure out how this happened. I would guess his lawyer didn’t really believe him
shusaku··on The early History of the Singular Value Decomposition (1993) [pdf]
I use it literally every day. But please do not use it to generate tests on its own, it’s all sleight of hand. It does not (without substantial guidance and tweaking from an expert) have the capability to generate meaningful tests.
shusaku··on Claude Code sends 33k tokens before reading the prompt; OpenCode sends 7k
Anecdotally at least Claude code uses less api money for me than other harnesses. I think people might be missing some caching discount?
shusaku··on The early History of the Singular Value Decomposition (1993) [pdf]
Claude is absolutely terrible at writing unit tests, this advice continues to perplex me. Coding agents usually slam you with hundreds of lines that do little more than “test” what is obvious. Maybe it’s good for an API revision or such. But for linear algebra where errors might not manifest unless suitably chosen inputs are generated based on expert knowledge, that’ll be useless.
shusaku··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
Blaming this on billionaires instead of “the whole” who are customers of space-x is asinine.
shusaku··on Why American ambulance rides are so expensive
I completely lost interest at the options part, it’s not that complicated of a concept. But substack writers have their type
shusaku··on GPT-5.6 Sol Ultra will be in Codex
I recently have been testing ChatGPT business at work and the quota seems to disappear almost instantly even using weaker models. Unless they dramatically increase their quotas it’ll be unusable.
shusaku··on Michigan spent $1.8B and only created 602 jobs
What the hell is that image of Whitner.
shusaku··on FDA advisors unanimously vote to approve Moderna's mRNA after agency drama
Interesting. I wonder if the variant limits us now capped by how much you can pack in the vaccine, or how good a on the body does priming for a bunch of stuff at once.
shusaku··on Norway imposes near ban on AI in elementary school
Connect the dots also banned, though there is some discussion of loosening the rules to allow interpolating up to four points.
shusaku··on Anthropic requires 30 day data retention for Fable and Mythos
Are they really burning good will? For many users this is a deal breaker. But for the general public, politicians, etc they’re stamping “safety” on their brand.
shusaku··on Setting up a free *.city.state.us locality domain (2025)
> Registration of many locality domains have been delegated to various companies

Are these companies getting paid for this service?

shusaku··on Sawe becomes first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race
> Better understanding of fuelling. … Better planning tools.

When I was young everyone acted like running was all about who could endure misery the longest. I think if I had known about these aspects it would’ve seemed more strategic and interesting (especially with smart phones to help). Alas, these days all my effort is in making sure my run doesn’t kill my knees :\

shusaku··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
“Super markets trade money for food. An obvious outcome is that someone without money will shoot the employees to steal food. Therefore the purpose of supermarkets is to facilitate murder”
shusaku··on AI singer now occupies eleven spots on iTunes singles chart
This comment is like 20 years out of date haha. People shifted to single hits when the iTunes store was selling songs for 99 cents. Now (and by now I mean for over a decade) we’re in the age of streaming, and you can easily access whole albums with zero friction. It’s the best time ever for the full listen through experience. And artists are responding by releasing long albums.

What I do think is lost these days is listening to the save album over and over again.

shusaku··on Oracle slashes 30k jobs
When you send your database a query, who do you think is gathering those tables?
shusaku··on Hold on to Your Hardware
Kind of an interesting history to this kind of url: https://www.nic.ad.jp/ja/dom/idn.html
shusaku··on Hold on to Your Hardware
> These days, the biggest customers are not gamers, creators, PC builders or even crypto miners anymore. Today, it’s hyperscalers. … > These buyers don’t care if RAM costs 20% more and neither do they wait for Black Friday deals. Instead, they sign contracts measured in exabytes and billions of dollars.

Does all this not apply to businesses buying computers for their employees?

shusaku··on They’re vibe-coding spam now
For years I’ve read people claim that the reason spam emails were low quality was to filter for idiots. If the spammers are now reaching for coding agents to clean up the presentation, it seems that theory was bunk.
shusaku··on Profiling Hacker News users based on their comments
The real game starts when you use a tool like this to introduce a counter narrative. Now excuse while I’m off to play in my next professional basketball game.
shusaku··on iPhone 17e
Me too, but I’m going to have to upgrade. The lack of storage on my phone (64GB) is killing me - every time there is an os update I have to delete almost everything to make room
