You may be interested in the glycemic index [1] which represents how much a particular food causes your blood sugar to spike compared to pure sugar. Based on a cursory search, the GI for an apple is somewhere in the 30s which is way less than a candy bar which can be 70+.

That sounds interesting. Could you link some sources where I can read more about Ritchie's design decision for C and Unix?
shorts_theory··on Google Summer of Code in 2022 – No longer limited to students
A few years ago GSoC students could get directly get an interview at Google, but the rule has been changed since then and I don't think they use GSoC for recruiting anymore.
shorts_theory··on Google Summer of Code in 2022 – No longer limited to students
Glad to see Google keeping this alive! I benefited a lot from participating in the GSoC program twice and I probably wouldn't be where I am right now without it! It can't be overstated how valuable the mentorship and open-source community experience is for programmers in the beginning of their careers.

I love the integrated terminal too! It's such a great idea which is now integral to my workflow.
shorts_theory··on Nobody designs for small iPhone devices anymore
That website is incredible. I had no idea I would be so engrossed in reading about the size and shape of map labels and the shape of building in a phone map application.
shorts_theory··on Kalman Filter
This was a great resource when I was learning about the KF, EKF, and UKF last year :-) Thanks a lot for making this!
shorts_theory··on DJI FPV
I really like Skydio's product but they've priced themselves out of being a competitor to most of DJI's drones. Of course, all the hardware for their autonomy engine (Jetson TX2 with six cameras) isn't cheap. I'd still love to see a cheaper version (maybe $400?) with a less sophisticated autonomy engine compete with Mavic Mini. If they could open-source the design and allow for custom flight/autonomy code, it would be a superb value proposition.
shorts_theory··on Processors Under Pillows
This reminds my childhood computer stories and how I got into using Linux in 10th grade. My parents installed the K9 Website blocker on Windows which was (is?) a pretty strong domain blocking tool. Let alone anything NSFW, Youtube and Facebook were blocked too! I learned a bit about dual booting online and with a freshly burned CD of Ubuntu 12.04, I was determined not to screw things up. I was pretty happy I installed Ubuntu safely and it was a relief to find that the parental website blockers of Windows had no equivalents on Ubuntu. I often think that I probably wouldn't have had a headstart on using Linux and programming had it not been for wanting to circumvent website blocking tools.
shorts_theory··on I bought 200 Raspberry Pi Model B’s and I’m going to fix them
This is awesome. I'd love to read the SD card repair post, because I have a Model 3B+ which died four weeks after I bought it in a quadcopter accident. My suspicion is that the problem is solely with the micro SD card reader as the card was bent in half when I retrieved it. The power LEDs still turn on, but USB boot doesn't appear to be working either.
shorts_theory··on Odroid-Go Super: $80 Games Console That Looks Like a Switch, but Runs Ubuntu
No, I don't think single use batteries have been on handheld consoles since the OG GBA :-) But the 3DS/XL's Li-ion battery is pretty easy to replace with a screwdriver.
shorts_theory··on Odroid-Go Super: $80 Games Console That Looks Like a Switch, but Runs Ubuntu
The 3DS (especially if you can pick up a used one) is actually an excellent choice for access to almost all of Nintendo's handheld library after installing the custom firmware hack. DS and 3DS games are supported via cartridges and the rest can be found by installing the .cia files. I haven't tried NES and SNES games, but it runs GBA and GB games great.
shorts_theory··on Getting Started in Robotics
Thanks for sharing this. As a Masters' student currently studying robotics, I felt pretty overwhelmed with all the sub-fields when coming from a computer science degree in undergrad. I only got a clear understanding of what I was interested in after a year of courses. I think joining a lab and learning as you go is sound advice, but if you really want to do some novel research, you would need a semester or two of courses just to be able to contribute (by which time you would have almost finished your masters). It also seems like a lot of research directions gravitate towards deep RL when classical approaches could work just as well, if not better.

Also, unfortunately due to COVID, most of the work I've done with robotics has only been in simulation and I've found myself frustrated by the limitations of the simulator or the work required to simulate a real world scenario. Working with real world data might be slower, but it's a lot more satisfying when it works.

KDE Neon (https://neon.kde.org/) is pretty great. It's based off the latest LTS version of Ubuntu, but is less bloated and gets KDE Frameworks updates quicker than Kubuntu.

Considerably more powerful and expensive, but the Jetson TX2 or Xavier NX fits this niche quite well.

shorts_theory··on Piipcam – 1080P IP Camera on a Raspberry Pi Zero W
Yes, the way to test your own camera is to connect it to your computer and launch APStreamline. As the sibling comment suggested, feel free to add a GitHub issue if you want your camera to be supported. In case you want to DIY support for your camera, the steps here https://arnavdhamija.com/2020/10/29/apstreamline-v2/ have an outline of what to do.
shorts_theory··on Piipcam – 1080P IP Camera on a Raspberry Pi Zero W
Yes! This uses the H264 stream encoded by the C920 so you will be able to get an HD stream even on low powered devices such as the Raspberry Pi.
shorts_theory··on Piipcam – 1080P IP Camera on a Raspberry Pi Zero W
Thank you! The list of cameras for which I have added special support are:

* Logitech C920

* Raspberry Pi Camera

* e-Con AR0521

* ZED2 Depth camera (in V4L2 mode)

In case your camera is not one of the above, APStreamline falls back to requesting an MJPG stream from the camera and then encoding it to H264 that using the x264enc software encoder. The software encoder has good quality but it requires more CPU power.

shorts_theory··on Piipcam – 1080P IP Camera on a Raspberry Pi Zero W
I’d like to plug my project, APStreamline for just this use case (https://github.com/shortstheory/APStreamline). It supports network adaptive streaming which adjusts the resolution and bitrate of the H264 video streamed from the Pi camera depending on the quality of your network connection. You can then use an RTSP player such as VLC to view the video stream. It works great with other types of cameras too!
shorts_theory··on Is This the End of the Repairable iPhone?
I've had a good experience with Apple Singapore (Wheelock Place) as well. I was even able to get a loaner iPhone 6 for a week when I gave my OG SE in for repair due to a display issue causing the screen to slightly pop out of its frame. Quite understandably (but somewhat to my dismay), they wouldn't give me a loaner iPhone 8 instead.
shorts_theory··on Notes on My Colon Cancer
This story was surprisingly compelling. The writing style really brought me in and I am very glad that the cancer was treated successfully!
shorts_theory··on Google Coral Dev Board mini SBC is now available for $100
I don’t think the Jetson nano even has a DL accelerator, so I could see the Google SBC achieving much better INT8 inference performance. The Jetson has a CUDA capable GPU, so the comparison is kind of apples and oranges.

shorts_theory··on Running a Unix-like OS on a home-built CPU with a home-built C compiler
Sorry for the late reply, but I found #gstreamer on FreeNode IRC super useful for getting support on how GStreamer works internally! The developers are usually active all the time so you should be able to find someone around to help out.
shorts_theory··on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
It's also unfortunate that many iOS apps have totally neglected support for 4" devices and it's all too common to see apps in which the viewport is far too small due to other UI elements covering the screen (e.g. Uber and Google Maps).
shorts_theory··on Running a Unix-like OS on a home-built CPU with a home-built C compiler
Haha thanks, I appreciate the compliment! I'm actually in the middle of a rewrite to make adding new camera types a lot easier and the code a lot cleaner in general.

I wasn't aware that it was possible that you could request I-frames in the RTSP spec. Which clients provide such functionality? I am looking for some web based RTSP streaming solutions, so your project could be very useful :-) Good luck for it!

shorts_theory··on Running a Unix-like OS on a home-built CPU with a home-built C compiler
What problems are you encountering with RTSP? I used GstRTSPServer for an open-source project (https://github.com/shortstheory/adaptive-streaming) and it's filled my requirements pretty well. RTSP clients on the other hand...are a much more difficult story.
