shiftpgdn··on Rivian in talks with Amazon to remove exclusivity clause of EV van agreement
These talks obviously are going to take a long time with a big company like Amazon. Rivian probably wants to start filling their order book for 2024/2025 which can help them secure additional financing to keep the company going.
shiftpgdn··on Tim Cook bets on Apple’s mixed-reality headset to secure his legacy
I have the Meta/Rayban stories sunglasses and they're unquestionably my favorite sunglasses and it's unfortunate they haven't been as big of a hit as I expected.

They are very natural, the camera and video feature work great, they're excellent for taking calls and listening to music. If they could achieve the AR feature set that I have in my Nreal Air's, but untethered it would be "The great leap forward" for AR/VR consumer glasses.

shiftpgdn··on Linode increases price of compute plans and more
Lightsail is terrible for anything serious. They are extremely overprovisioned.
shiftpgdn··on First Image from Sony Star Sphere Satellite Released
Yes but now instead of having to spend $20 million on a satellite launch (including R&D time and hardware, not just the rideshare fee) you can pay $XX dollars to get your photo. Seems to be a significant cost savings.
shiftpgdn··on Plastic-based fuels may present an “unreasonable risk” to human health
30ish years.
shiftpgdn··on Plastic-based fuels may present an “unreasonable risk” to human health
Proof bread with a cloth. Glass containers for food are very durable, I've yet to break one.
shiftpgdn··on Bankman-Fried, others made 300 illegal political donations, new indictment says
Nominative determinism in action.
shiftpgdn··on Infinite-Storage-Glitch – Use YouTube as cloud storage for any files
Where did the $12,000/year come in?
shiftpgdn··on Super Resolution: Image-to-Image Translation Using Deep Learning in ArcGIS Pro
30/50cm per pixel are the maximum allowable by law in the US for "civilians". I'm sure we could do even better if allowed.
shiftpgdn··on Moving my PC into my rack in a 2U case
Pelican makes a 30" rack depth portable case. Not quite 40" but almost there.
shiftpgdn··on Moving my PC into my rack in a 2U case
Dell T7810/5810/5820s can be had second hand for practically nothing and they have fairly modern build specs. They're sized to fit in racks with some basic L shaped rails. They also make great under desk systems as they're whisper quiet.
shiftpgdn··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
Likewise. The only bizarre behavior I see is "looney tunes" style confusion where the road construction crews have left old lanes in place that steer into a wall or off the road. Humans mostly understand that these are lines lazy construction crews have left (although the debris fields near the barriers maybe tell a different story), but the Tesla vision model likes to try to follow them.
shiftpgdn··on Where do stolen bikes go?
I had this with a stolen iphone in Houston, Texas. I called the local police and they said they couldn't help, I told the operator that's okay, I have a gun and I'll go retrieve it myself. An officer was standing in front of me 10 minutes later. We got the phone back.
shiftpgdn··on How to keep a great magazine going
Texas Monthly is in no way a conservative magazine. Are we reading the same thing?
shiftpgdn··on ERs are hiring fewer doctors to save money
Counterpoint: You can go read the “Noctor” subreddit or ask any practicing physician why it’s bad for patient outcome.

Ultimately we need more doctors and less hospital administrators.

shiftpgdn··on How much can you get out of a $4 VPS?
At current interest rates they wouldn't if they had to take out a loan for the house. That's my point. It's not profitable even on a 5 year return window.
shiftpgdn··on How much can you get out of a $4 VPS?
How could a company make any money renting an IPv4 address for $1-2/month when it cost them $50 for the address.
shiftpgdn··on How much can you get out of a $4 VPS?
ipv4 addresses are approaching $50-60 per address. The days of cheap ipv4 vpses is almost over.
shiftpgdn··on AWS Tape Gateway
You needed to run a cleaner through that tape device.
shiftpgdn··on Driving 100 Miles in an EV Is Now More Expensive Than in an ICE
The "article" is based off of a study by "Anderson Economic Group" which touts itself as an organization that "offers research and consulting in economics, valuation, market analysis, and public policy." One look at their "Energy and Environment" page should tell you everything you need to know: https://www.andersoneconomicgroup.com/expertise/industry-exp...

Their cost to drive an EV 100 miles is claiming $15, which is absolutely insane. I have a luxury SUV ev (Audi etron) and my cost for 100 miles is about 4 dollars based on 13c/kwh electricity. If I ONLY charged at public chargers it would be between $13.32 (40c/kwh) and $8.33 (25c/kwh). This article is bullshit.

shiftpgdn··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
Texans don't want to live in suburbs in drive cars, they have no choice because it's illegal to build dense housing via deed covenants and city ordinances that work in place of zoning. The most expensive and desirable housing (not counting the hyper-wealthy enclaves) in Houston is also the most walkable and dense.
shiftpgdn··on The limits of "computational photography"
Google Pixel phones still do "deep fusion" processing like an iphone, but instead with Google's secret sauce. The photo your phone is showing you is what machine learning thinks the picture should look like, and not the picture you took.
shiftpgdn··on U.S. No Fly list publicly shared on a hacking forum, government investigating
Bad according to who?
shiftpgdn··on NASA predicts asteroid to make one of closest approaches to Earth ever recorded
Everyone once in a while the roulette ball lands on green and I get a big payout. That's not a cyclical event.
shiftpgdn··on Ask HN: How do ADHD people cope on here?
If you have an iPhone put it into grayscale mode. I promise your screen usage will drop by half if you can keep it enabled.
shiftpgdn··on Apple reportedly shelved its plans to release AR glasses any time soon
They do. You'll be shocked.
shiftpgdn··on Tesla Vehicle Safety Report
I did 30,000 miles in a 2019 outback with a significant amount of phantom breaking, more than I've had in my Tesla or e-tron. Anecdotes don't mean much.
shiftpgdn··on Post-processing is ruining iPhone photos
My Sigma FP isn’t using a deep learning model to enhance the image like an iPhone is (in iPhones case, deep field has added faces to photos, and all sort of other crazy stuff.)

It’s dishonest to try compare color profiles with AI image manipulation .

shiftpgdn··on Tesla stock marks lowest close in years as investors worry about Musk’s focus
It’s relative and overlooks ten+ years of trading.

Tesla stock is only at the lowest since the start of the pandemic when everything wildly inflated due to the massive influx of money into the system. It’s still radically up since 2017. The last two years were a severe anomaly.

shiftpgdn··on Documentary heritage: fungal deterioration in Compact Discs
I think if you vacuum sealed the disks it would help prevent the issue.
