That's hilarious.
shagymoe··on They stole my voice with AI
Oh yes, the United States, founded on religious freedom, is the place where you get stoned in the street for blasphemy.
shagymoe··on Is the Atlantic Overturning Circulation Approaching a Tipping Point?
I'm going with the scientists on this one, not some random dude on HN.
shagymoe··on Here is $1M. Try to Win the Lottery
Tell me another way you can have a chance to change your life and the life of everyone you love, so substantially, for just $2. If you can spare $4/week it's worth the chance IMHO.
shagymoe··on The Dumber Side of Smart People
Way to completely discount the thousands of smart people who actually made it happen.
shagymoe··on Spot Bitcoin ETF receives official approval from the SEC
Probably fees, but that's true of the many S&P 500 funds also.
shagymoe··on Jobs you're applying to might not be real
Cover letters are a scourge on society anyway.
shagymoe··on Hospital Price Gaps Show Just How Broken the $4.5T US Health Market Is
Are you serious? Every pregnancy doesn't follow the precise set of rules you've laid out here. What an arrogant comment.
shagymoe··on The wealth of the 25 richest families in the world soared 43% in the last year
When you’re always in danger of going broke from a medical condition or emergency, $80k isn’t enough to feel secure. The system is designed so it’s never enough but you can reduce risk with more.
shagymoe··on The wealth of the 25 richest families in the world soared 43% in the last year
Given that 2 million is barely enough to retire on, does that mean you think everyone should work until they die?
shagymoe··on Ask HN: Tech stack for small SaaS side projects as a solo developer?
Ruby on Rails is still the best at what you're describing if it's a web app.
shagymoe··on U.S. cities consider banning "right on red" laws amid rise in pedestrian deaths
You haven't seen Florida drivers turn right on red. Also, is death the only measurement? Would you be happy to be paralyzed or maimed?
shagymoe··on U.S. cities consider banning "right on red" laws amid rise in pedestrian deaths
A Prius will kill or seriously injure someone with something like 85% effectiveness of a larger vehicle, no?
shagymoe··on California population drain: State is hemorrhaging residents to other states
A shoebox house 45 min by train from SF costs $1 million. Rates are approaching 8%. Taxes are close to 10%. Your car windows can't survive 5 minutes in the city. The air is occasionally not breathable, typically during the best months of the year to be outside. Anyone not in finance or tech is probably living with their extended family because minimum rent is approaching $3k/month in a non-murderous area. Homeless camps everywhere. No enforcement on property theft.

I loved my time in CA, but the second WFH was a thing, I was out, regrettably. I'm not going to work an extra 10 years just so I can pay a mortgage.

shagymoe··on Biden cancels $9B in student debt for 125,000 borrowers
Did you get the same amount of money as all the companies with forgiven PPP loans?
shagymoe··on Missing girl found using fingerprints on ransom note
Do you think there's still anyone alive that doesn't know about fingerprints?
shagymoe··on American hard hat jobs have the highest level of open positions ever recorded
You clearly haven't worked a labor job. "Keeps the body young"? No, it generally destroys the body. Also, there's a reason the phrase "regulations are written in blood" gets repeated. Spoiler: It's because people have been injured and died doing things they didn't know were bad. In this guy's case, does he know under which conditions the giant hole he just dug with his shovel will cave in and bury him alive? Likely not. The same applies to "licensing barriers".

This plague of people who think they're smarter than everyone else, especially those who came before them, and know about everything is insufferable.

shagymoe··on List of APIs that require declared reasons
I prefer privacy of whatever small improvements will be made to the UX through data collection. In 20 years of software development, I've not seen data collection actually move the needle much in terms of UX improvement.

The pasteboard is critical to protect from bad actors.

shagymoe··on Home Taping Is Killing Music: When the music industry waged war on the cassette
Nothing about the "quality" of art, including music, is objective. These sound waves are better than those sound waves? No. Beauty and the quality of art is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder.
shagymoe··on Founder of crypto lender Celsius Network arrested, charged with fraud
This is exactly what I mean so thanks for demonstrating. If you can't imagine a single useful purpose for Bitcoin, you're not even trying.
shagymoe··on Founder of crypto lender Celsius Network arrested, charged with fraud
It's selfish to reject something beneficial to everyone because you won't benefit as much as others, no? Maybe jealousy is a better adjective.

You continue to call it a "scheme" but it was literally invented due to the corruption and malfeasance and "schemes" of the current banking system. Do you call those schemes and scams as well or are those just the ones we've deemed acceptable and necessary for some reason?

FWIW, I think the current system is unstoppable and inflation is necessary theft because that's just how it works but I do believe people should be able to save and not lose value. On a long-term basis, Bitcoin achieves that when essentially nothing else can because we've designed it that way.

We're all "rich" here and I get why most of us simply want that to continue.

shagymoe··on Founder of crypto lender Celsius Network arrested, charged with fraud
As noted by another poster, all transactions cost someone something on every monetary network. You're also completely ignoring all the benefits miners provide by securing the network etc...

Celcius, FTX, et al the many thousands of shitcoins are all scams or pyramid schemes without merit. Bitcoin, despite that fact that early adopters profit greatly, has many benefits to individuals and society as a whole but many people have simply closed themselves off to the possibility because they're unwilling, for mostly selfish reasons, to even consider the benefits.

shagymoe··on Recession canceled? U.S. stock market 'frothy' after S&P 500's strong first half
Here's some lazy ChatGPT info:

However, there are certain factors that can lead to individuals falling out of the official unemployment statistic:

Discouraged Workers: If individuals become discouraged and stop actively seeking employment, they may no longer be counted as part of the labor force or in the unemployment rate calculation.

Underemployed Workers: The unemployment rate may not fully capture those who are working part-time but would prefer full-time employment. These individuals are considered part of the employed category, even if their work hours are insufficient.

Marginally Attached and Particular Job Seekers: Some individuals may have searched for employment in the past but have not actively sought employment in the four weeks preceding the survey. They are classified as marginally attached to the labor force and are not considered part of the unemployed category.

Involuntary Part-Time Workers: People who are working part-time due to economic reasons, such as inability to find full-time work, are included in the employed category but may not be fully reflected in the unemployment rate.

And probably also low because every unemployed person drops off the list after 6 months AFAIK.
shagymoe··on Abrupt expansion of climate change risks for species globally
Yes, and it's provably happening but there's still an army of people willing to deny rapid extinction of many species. At what point will you be convinced?
shagymoe··on In praise of blowing up your life
I've done this on a smaller, temporary scale and it wasn't for me. You end up spending a lot of your time planning, packing, unpacking and generally working around all the things you never have to think about when you just live where you want to live and do some traveling. Our life became meaningless chores that just ate away at all the interesting things we could be doing or wanted to be doing.
shagymoe··on Molly White Tracks Crypto Scams. It’s Going Just Great
Really? How? I needed to transfer money from the sale of a property in Europe and the fees + currency conversion was over $1000.
shagymoe··on Ask HN: If you were suddenly Financially free, what would you do next?
Thanks! I'm pro vaccines and just have to accept that he lost the vaccine lottery. The annual incidence of GBS is estimated to be between 1 to 2 cases per 100,000 vaccinated people.
shagymoe··on Ask HN: If you were suddenly Financially free, what would you do next?
It was confirmed. There is a government fund to cover the costs of care related to vaccine reactions and my son received IVIG which is costly and was covered. Unfortunately, his ongoing medical issues are not covered and he's ineligible for disability.

FWIW, I have multiple boosters and will continue getting vaccines approved by the government. He was just extremely unlucky. I am pro vaccines.

shagymoe··on Ask HN: If you were suddenly Financially free, what would you do next?
Primarily, I'd use it to give my son the best life he can have after contracting Guillian-Barre syndrome from the covid vaccine. A nice house close to me, money for the things he wants and needs and all the medical care and physical therapy he needs.

Having your life destroyed for doing the right thing is devastating, especially at 25 years old. He was valiantly still able to somehow continue working his remote tech support job until he was laid off. With the current market, it's unlikely he'll find work any time soon and even less likely to find an employer that will tolerate occasional days where the intense nerve pain is too much to bear.
