shaftoe··on Judge: California’s women on boards law is unconstitutional
I think it's similarly fair to question whether it is a good idea to let governments make decisions and expect them to be optimal, or whether optimizing for equity in outcome is inherently good.
shaftoe··on Managing People
I think a better way to phrase his point is that responsibility rolls upward. You cannot delegate responsibility for an outcome, though you can share it.
shaftoe··on What’s the Difference Between American English and British English?
Southern US here. It's not Worchestersher sauce?
shaftoe··on Ask HN: I'm making like 0 friends at college, how to fix it?
Maybe, but I have rarely experienced wide advertisement (that was intended to include me) and don't know where to begin. I agree that this is off-putting advice.

Many social activities assume you're showing up with friends. If you have none, they're akward and depressing.

shaftoe··on Time to retire the CSV?
These are strings containing JSON
shaftoe··on Five Oregon counties vote to leave state, create 'Greater Idaho'
Do you notice that you've defined your own viewpoint as rational and supported by data and the viewpoint of others as "probably focused around emotions"?
shaftoe··on Gallup: U.S. church membership dips below 50% for first time
Churches absolutely solve loneliness: it's a ready-made community complete with social events and opportunities that, with small exceptions and discounting odd-ball churches, anyone can join. Yes, they have a morality on right and wrong, but from reading your comment, I'm pretty sure you do too.

People are avoiding dating and marriage because of climate change? This doesn't sound real.

I suspect COVID making everything socially bizarre is having a much bigger impact on dating than a financial bubble bursting 13 years ago.

shaftoe··on Reddit’s most popular subreddits go private in protest against ‘censorship’
Are you sure you're not thinking of arguments about first amendment protections instead of censorship?
shaftoe··on Less than 20% of the world's population now live in a “free” country
In your free country, am I free to not pay for all your good ideas? What happens to me if I refuse to contribute to your ideas?
shaftoe··on Remembering Allan McDonald, who refused to approve the Challenger launch
It can be.
shaftoe··on To Lose Weight with Exercise, Aim for 300 Minutes a Week
Pre-COVID and WFH becoming normal, I had a short commute. Only 6 miles.

Many places, walking to work is a joke.

shaftoe··on South Dakota nurse says many dying patients still insist Covid-19 'not real'
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
shaftoe··on Future gun control has been shot down
That's a fun blurb for a comedy routine, but ammunition is trivially easy to manufacture.

People do it in their basement as a hobby.

shaftoe··on IBM is splitting itself into two public companies
Probably their "cloud" unit. Because renting time on a mainframe is the same thing, right?
shaftoe··on Risk of War Crimes Charges for U.S. Grows over Saudi Strikes in Yemen
None of that is going to happen, for the same reason China can put an entire people into death camps and Russia can just take land from Ukraine.

Power comes from the barrel of a gun.

shaftoe··on The Social Media Problem
"Most people are effectively powerless to make an impact on much outside their immediate lives."

Isn't this a good thing? Doesn't it mean that they can't harm others?

shaftoe··on The Incredibly Stupid One
Expired tires!! This is hilarious!
shaftoe··on Ending at-will employment: a better remedy for cancel culture?
Certain basic values like freedom of speech?
shaftoe··on India bans TikTok, WeChat, and dozens of other Chinese apps
The idea that restrictions in human liberty are subject to when "a national community agrees on something" is laughable at best and evil at worst.
shaftoe··on New Facebook tool allows employers to suppress “unionize” in workplace chat
They do. It's called finding another job.
shaftoe··on Can We Have Prosperity Without Growth?
You don't see much evil to handicapping the entire human race?
shaftoe··on Paean to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (2016)
"Some would ask, how could a perfect God create a universe filled with so much that is evil. They have missed a greater conundrum: why would a perfect God create a universe at all?"

--Sister Miriam Godwinson, "But for the Grace of God"

They're all listed out here: https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Sid_Meier%27s_Alpha_Centauri

shaftoe··on Hepatitis C kills more Americans than all other infectious diseases combined
I get their point about stigma, but as someone who has never injected drugs, I'm having a hard time caring about getting screened for this.

How do they intend to actually roll out a massive testing operation (everyone under 80) when likely most people hear the details and respond with "meh, not me"?

shaftoe··on Show HN: Learn When to Quit
This is the Secretary Problem.

shaftoe··on Why does the Librem 5 phone cost that much?
Great link.

"Quantities matter [in China] and getting only dozen or couple of hundred orders per month doesn't really help. That said, the Librems are heavily overpriced but that is because Purism seemingly never tried to get better deal and the South San Francisco partner abused this so that is why Purism Librems are double the price they should be. I believe that if we had more realistic prices, it would be much better for Purism not only financially but also more talking about it, more of it in wild which in turn means much more orders, more happy customers etc. The innovation is not really that hard in this space because big players don't try to really innovate as they have strong positions, so it wouldn't be that hard to be good or better then most of big players even, but quantity leverage is hard to pass by."

shaftoe··on GitHub tries to quell employee anger over its ICE contract
These aren't people fleeing genocide. These are people leaving Mexico. And they're being put in hotels and buses.

It's easy to pretend you're fellow Americans are monsters, but they're not.

shaftoe··on The Mark Zuckerberg Is a Lot Less Impressive Than the Movie Version
There's a gray area that makes defining what is political complex when it comes to subjects that become politicized.
shaftoe··on Activision Blizzard has moved billions of dollars of profit into tax havens
It's reasonable to assume all entities act out of rational self-interest.

To be angry with someone when they simply defend their own interests is to either hate the person/entity or to be angry with nature itself. That was my only point.

shaftoe··on Activision Blizzard has moved billions of dollars of profit into tax havens
Curse them for not wanting to pay extra money for no gain. How dare they act out of a rational self interest.
shaftoe··on Google Cloud networking issues in us-east1
As someone who lost critical business functionality yesterday when my appengine instances returned only 502s for 5 hours, I find the idea it was "a ridiculous time to nitpick" hilarious.

My customers don't care that the network is down, the servers are down, or aliens have landed. The severity is the same and our infrastructure, regardless of the cause, was down.

During the impacted time period, we did a full DR failover to appengine instances we spun up in west2. This was not a minor hiccup.
