shae··on Insights from the Nix thesis in short form
insights from the Nix thesis in short form
shae··on Everything you always wanted to know about mathematics (2013) [pdf]
I collect interesting problems and learn the math that can solve them. I do best by directly connecting fun and learning.
shae··on Ask HN: What is new in algorithms and data structures these days?
I'd suggest looking up succinct data structures, cache oblivious data structures, and probabilistic data structures.
shae··on You and Your Research (1986)
Get the book! It's packed with great content.
shae··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
Also bonus feature is the LEDs that light up for the same command in the same directory are also the same LEDs.

That means I can tell exactly which processes are in which status.

shae··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
Yes, that's exactly what it does!
shae··on Ask HN: Why not give access to everything, to everyone in an an organization?
I'd worry about ransomware, but otherwise this is a great idea.
shae··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
I use a board with 32 RGB LEDs to show process status: https://github.com/shapr/bloohm

If you ever have multiple hour long builds and/or test suites running, this is is a big help.

shae··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
Because we haven't taught them yet.

Allocate time to teach others around you.

shae··on Revisiting Vernor Vinge’s “predictions” for 2025
I certainly do care about old books, but copyright prevents me from easily getting a copy of the things I want to read.
shae··on Ask HN: What $500-2500 product improved your 2022
I bought the cheapest steam deck and a 512GB SD card.

Turns out I use my steam deck for watching movies and as a portable linux handheld. I do play some games, but it's such a great form factor for a small beefy, uh, pocketop?

What's smaller than a laptop, larger than a handheld? Is that a pocket-top?

shae··on How transportation technologies shaped empires
This is why you need more mass transit where you live.
shae··on Lnav – An advanced log file viewer for the small-scale
This tool saved me weeks of work once. You gotta try it.
shae··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
I like buying physical discs and then bringing the media I'm bored of watching to a friend swap. I get rid of movies/music I won't watch again soon, and I get movies/music I want to try!
shae··on Papers and patents are becoming less disruptive over time
You can't get funding for studies that disagree with existing research.
shae··on Obsolete Sounds: collection of disappearing sounds and extinct sounds
The BBC SFX collection is larger, and freely available for download
shae··on Visualize active fires around the world with Javascript
I thought this was visualizing people getting fired, oops.
shae··on Is old music killing new music?
Any recommended music subreddits? I'm especially interested in finding links to good stuff on bandcamp.
shae··on Is old music killing new music?
I find new music I love on bandcamp, perhaps that's outside the data used for this analysis?

Anyway, I spend thousands of dollars on amazing music on bandcamp, and the artists get a higher percentage from bandcamp than a studio, so I'm making the best choice for me and the future of my music.

shae··on Ask HN: I feel so shallow and dumb when I see what other smart people are doing
I pick small projects I can do in a day, and sometimes come back and improve those projects. I have to do fun things in small chunks that can be completed in just a few hours or I get distracted. I have learned that I can build momentum that way! The more I get done in a project, the more I'm able to do later in that project. Perhaps that would work for you too?
shae··on DuckDuckGo as a TTY
at least `ls` works!
shae··on A World Without Sci-Hub
Misinformation is free, real research is expensive, even if funded by your tax dollars.
shae··on Ask HN: Feeling guilty for doing the bare minimum at work
Not all the medications are amphetamines. The most popular medication, Ritalin, is not an amphetamine.

Even the ADHD prescribed amphetamine medication is dextroamphetamine, not the scary methamphetamine.

There are also several medications that are not stimulants. While I do believe that children should be prescribed the minimum medications during their formative years, I've talked to several teachers whose students now have a prescription because the children were doing school at home and finally followed the teacher's recommendation.

shae··on Ask HN: Is it better to generalise or specialise as a developer?
Don't be too broad, hiring managers won't know what to do with you. I have too many differing specialisations and interviews start with "what would you say you actually do?" People want to know which box you fit into.
shae··on The Institute of Shortening and Edible Oils (ISEO)
There's a lobbying group in DC specific to ice cream flavors! They also do the real milk slogan.
shae··on Ask HN: Show me the sexy, sexy home page of your favorite free CLI project
One of my favorites is https://bluebird.sh/ check out all that amazing command line software! a drawing program, a multiplayer crossword solver, and the amazing visidata program (my visidata review is https://recurse.social/@shapr/105984740425426440 )
shae··on Show HN: Shithub: Public Git Hosting on 9front
I'm a fan, this is really cool!
shae··on Best online communities for software developers
I expected to see IRC communities as well.

Is there a collection of communities that aren't hosted by corporations?

shae··on $1 hearing aid could treat millions with hearing loss
I never wrote part 2 of this blog post, but there's a $300 open source hearing aid that can do way more than most hearing aids: https://shapr.github.io/posts/2019-08-03-tympan.html

Here's the organization building this thing: https://shop.tympan.org/

I'm kinda excited about the four microphone board, where you can subtract the ambient noise behind the listener from the noise in the direction they're facing.

shae··on Open Source Hardware Hearing Aid Part 1
I have a friend who is the perfect candidate for a cochlear implant, but refuses to have closed source inside his head.

He does not wish to have his body hostage to any company, and I can understand that.
