And yet the amount of support he somehow still has in Canada makes me feel reassured it was a good decision to leave, people in this country will vote for whoever’s most woke even if their actions tell the exact opposite of what they said they stand for.

I never understand why so many people in the tech field are fond of it, it's nearly impossible to have any meaningful conversions or real connections.
Having the video on helps a ton, also rely on text chat a lot and try to go into a call prepared on the topics that need to be discussed.
Just less than 10 years ago, it would've been considered very rude to push your religious or political opinions on to others, especially when it's a professional setting it would've been considered highly unprofessional. But nowadays that line doesn't seem to exist anymore.
I miss the days when Facebook was about sharing personal connections, stupid and fun stuff, as a shy kid in high school who didn't speak very good English, facebook has helped me made friends and connect with kids in my school as I was more comfortable talking to them online. Hard to imagine that would ever take place with the way Facebook is today, where you log on to scream at other people's political opinions which are different from yours.
To OP, layoffs are very common now and know that more will come soon because of COVID, it’s not within your control and doesn’t make you a bad developer, companies need to make cuts at times like this to keep afloat, you don’t need to blame yourself.
Take a deep breath, it may take more than a week to recover and don’t be hard on yourself. I’d find it hard to believe that you’ve truly overcame all the stages of grief in just a week, when I was laid off the first week I was still going through denial, and was trying to find a new job ASAP to prove myself. By the look of your post chances are you’re still in denial too. You have 15 years of exp under your belt, give it time to think about where you’d like to go and what you’d like to be doing in your next role, it will come to you sooner or later.
Bring it up with your management that it bothers you, then the ball is in their court whether they wanna make change to the policy. If it doesn't work out then all I can say is you'll be better off to find a place where the environment fits what you're looking form, also they should disclose this policy and situation upon hiring someone.
I will get annoyed and leave if the office has a toddler policy because I don't like children at all, but I won't blame the owners of the company if that's what they want, it just so happened I landed at a place where my interest don't fit with the rest.
