serpix··on Panic Attacks
The mind is always afraid and anxious. It is what it does, finds problems. By focusing the mind on problems you will get more problems.

Your body knows how to calm down. It knows how to unravel that stored emotion and feeling. You only need to allow it to come out. Breathing and observing the breath is the first step of accepting your experience. You can never get rid of your emotions - you can only accept, allow or resist and suffer.

serpix··on Panic Attacks
Good! Now there is also the question where are these coming from? A part of you is at a tipping point. You can ignore this message and find chemicals or methods to distract or you can face yourself now and accept the growth that is going to happen.
serpix··on Publishing an iOS App with ClojureScript and React Native
Currently using a similar stack with Expo and it has been great.

There is no substitute for a real REPL and immediate code changes.

serpix··on Salt not as damaging to health as previously thought, says study
Interesting! Did my first two day fasting this weekend and felt awesome the whole time. I broke the fast yesterday evening because I want to hit the gym today.

Do you continue the fast after HIIt or do you eat some protein after? How do you feel after such an intense workout in a fasted state?

serpix··on Shortage of charging stations to become a bottleneck to mass adoption of EVs?
you can bring a small generator though
serpix··on Shortage of charging stations to become a bottleneck to mass adoption of EVs?
In Europe they are the best, especially PHEVs as they lower the cost of driving substantially in addition to getting less taxed. There is no competition cost wise.
serpix··on The world is losing the war against climate change
those type of houses are mostly made of glue and plastic. There is a ridiculous amount of toxic glue in modern wood buildings.
serpix··on The Power of Positive People
Thank you! It seems you've done a lot of work to arrive where you are now. And it probably wasn't easy either. I see the world like this as well and it is great to read about like minded people!
serpix··on Have we overestimated the effectiveness of psychotherapy?
There can be no real connection without showing your own wounds.

Your wounds also heal when you look into the eyes of another human telling you their fear and trauma with tears in their eyes. You connect with the experience of very humbling and deep empathy as the pain and feelings you share are the same. They are universal. You are not separate and you become to understand that you were never broken or incomplete or different.

This is the power of sharing yourself with others. We are not here alone and were never supposed to figure thins out alone.

serpix··on Apple says new MacBook Pro keyboard won't fix sticky key issue
Our IT is backlogged with broken keyboards and I'm waiting for. backup laptops to become available so I can send mine for replacement. We have upwards of 200 of these sorry devices. The percentage is well above 10%
serpix··on South Korea has limited a working week to 52 hours, in order to stop overwork
those hours are insanity. Your life is worth more than this.
serpix··on The Machine That Builds Itself: The Strengths of the Lisp Languages (2016)
And even then the consensus is to reconsider. And at the very last document a sample usage and an expanded form plus apology.
serpix··on I Don’t Believe in Full-Stack Engineering
yes!! That is what full stack is.

You can, if needed, produce a working app working from the database all the way to front end. This includes, design, ops and development. All of it.

serpix··on GitHub Stars !== Usage: React Is Still Blowing Vue and Angular Away
how do you access nested properties in Vue templates?

You can't do a.b.c if b is undefined and instead need to wrap it into satanic template extensions

serpix··on When the Government Takes Your Children
more pictures need to spread out from this atrocity, the public outrage will put a stop to this barbarism.
serpix··on Ask HN: What has the past 12 months taught you?
Thank you for having the guts to speak out about your situation. It is quite easy for strangers to tell you what to do but real life is always more complex than that.

Listen to your body when you think about your options. It is way ahead of the thinking mind and already knows what feels best.

serpix··on Ask HN: What has the past 12 months taught you?
Enough sleep comes before everything and everyone.

Optional typing (like clojure. spec, plumatic schema) beats static typing.

serpix··on Lasik’s Risks Are Coming into Sharper Focus
There is an alternative to Lasik. It is a new generation of PRK. the difference is you dont get a flap in the surgery and instead they burn and take away a layer from the eye.

The type of surgery I had done was TransPRK.

The benefits are less halos, extreme acuity and perfect dark sight.

I have no halos, no dryness and see better in the dark than before.

The healing process takes a bit longer than Lasik. You need to wear a contact lens for two weeks to protect the new layer growing over your eye. During this time your eyesight fluctuates and there is some nausea associated. This was thoroughly explained to me and I had no problems since every day it got better.

On some days I can count leaves on far away trees. Read license plates on cars way ahead of me. I would do it again even if it cost triple.

serpix··on What to Do When a Loved One Is Severely Depressed
Four years ago I was at this point. I talked with a number of psychologists and therapists about this. One of them said: "Have you wondered if your anxiety is really because of your relationship". And so began the steps to disengage and end the relationship.

I don't regret it now. I could not and still cannot keep my empathy separate from the suffering of others. The alternative would have been to harden my emotions and become like a rock. My opinion is that depression does transfer and it is contagious. Just as laughter and joy is contagious. I choose my company wisely now and cannot bear to be around negativity anymore, it just catches and makes me numb to everything.

I choose being sad and ecstatic even while they alternate to extreme highs and lows. I refuse to heal anyone anymore.

serpix··on What to Do When a Loved One Is Severely Depressed
also the first steps to enlightenment. Applies to all thoughts and emotions.
serpix··on The Decline of the MacBook Pro
until the keys stop working. It really breaks your flow when once in a while a shift or ctrl keypress does nothing. This keyboard is a failure and it is way too unreliable for daily work with lots of typing.
serpix··on For more and more people, work appears to serve no purpose
Some people get hired between step 3 and 4 and might never make the mental connection to step 1.

Step 5. Consultants get hired to digitalise the process of reporting.

Now a good consultant can make the leap to step 1 and start redirecting value to something else. A shitty consultant milks the company for $ without ever undermining the sorry people stuck at step 3.

serpix··on For more and more people, work appears to serve no purpose
Do it for a number of years and suddenly you realize: you've become one of them. Adding zero value and leeching of paying customers. Really kills your motivation to better yourself.
serpix··on Leveraging Introversion as a Career Strength
An architect has no business giving top down orders to anyone if they are not in the team as a productive member. A leader is right there doing the work, giving advice and support.
serpix··on Why Development Teams Struggle to Deliver on Time, on Budget, or at All
Why bother estimating? you have the checkboxes, now just get to work. If the pace of checking those boxes is slow then you can start cutting things out. Estimates are for managers, much better to just ship it already.
serpix··on Tesla Faces Accelerating Rate of Model 3 Refunds
It is a ridiculously well engineered car. Way more power than the competition, bigger battery than the competition. The 2009 model is still technically ahead of all the other plugins on the market.
serpix··on Ask HN: How do I convince management to hire better?
tight deadlines reeks of death march and burnout. How is the company culture? Why would anyone want to commit to tight deadlines? Those with passion and dedication are easy to lure into neat projects but the more experienced ones smell your death march and go somewhere else.
serpix··on Robust Clojure: The best way to handle nil
yes! you have eliminated repeating yourself and returning nil. Other ways to do this very simple example:

`(some-> m :c (inc 5))`

there is no need to defend against nil values. Hickey has your back on built in functions.

serpix··on Keyless Cars and Their Carbon Monoxide Toll
Did the dashboard display and lights go out and did it not emit a tone when you opened the door?
serpix··on Ask HN: Is knowing English a prerequisite for being a software engineer?
the more senior IT people will also question why you are mutating variables :)
