serpix··on Badger or Bulbasaur – have children lost touch with nature?
Connection with nature in my opinion does not equal knowing the names of all of the life found in nature. Connecting with nature means dropping your misguided identification as being somehow separate from nature. Experiencing the unmistakable unity of humans being a part of this earth just as any other life is what I call being connected. Putting a label on a bird is not an experience of anything but a symbol.
serpix··on Things Reacters do that Re-framers avoid
you would normally start setInterval/whatever function somewhere and you dispatch the change to re-frame when needed. Reframe will update the db and the components subscribing to that data will redraw when a change occurs. The component(s) themselves have no coupling whatsoever to what is providing the displayed data.
serpix··on How it feels to learn JavaScript in 2017
Thank you for the clarification and insight!
serpix··on How it feels to learn JavaScript in 2017
Having used only re-frame and Clojurescript for two years now every time I look at where the Javascript guys are I roll my head.

Is nobody even slightly wondering how OOP has infiltrated modern JS development?

Old school Java web development has fully seeped into Javascript with JSX replacing JSP, OOP everywhere.. It looks exactly like the bells and whistles of early 2000 web development.

serpix··on Ask HN: What mistakes in your experience does management keep making?
> Tolerating misbehavior out of fear of losing an employee.

What if said employee pulls in 10x, 100x more revenue/value than average worker for the company? Would you fire him because the rule book say so? That said I trust in effective communication as soon as possible to manage difficult situations or misbehaviour. Often the reasons can be deeply personal or family related and people are preoccupied with stuff outside work. We are human and human relations are variable, not absolute.

serpix··on SKYACTIV-X: first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition
That is horrible mileage. I remember averaging that on a 1997 Opel Astra.
serpix··on Clojure will affect the way you think about programming
my view is the opposite, ClojureScript is more permissive than Javascript :/
serpix··on Hy – A Lisp-flavored Python
in Clojure this is achieved with `as->`
serpix··on Swedish Government Scrambles to Contain Damage from Data Breach
You have housing mortgages that do not need to be repaid and you have no car sales tax. Two incredibly good reasons to love Sweden. <3
serpix··on Still locked out of my AWS account
Exact same issue. Have tried to resolve it for six months now. I've cancelled the credit card and they can f* themselves.
serpix··on Frequent sauna bathing can reduce the risk of dementia
As a Finnish person this question makes no sense. Everybody goes to the sauna. The young, old, babies, the sick as well. I go to the sauna even with fever as it feels good with the chills.
serpix··on Why we chose Vue.js over React
All you need is re-frame. It is well documented and the philosophy is explained as well.
serpix··on Why 30 is the decade friends disappear
You can satisfy your need for sensuality by going into social dancing events near you. Or join group singing events. None of these require you to be musical or able to dance at all! Just leave your prejudice and thinking at the door and enjoy the good vibes. Social dancing / Conscious clubbing is what keeps me going when I do this have a significant other in my life. The importance of touch and being touched is so important. It cannot be replaced with any amount of meditation or medication.
serpix··on Is Running Good or Bad for Your Health?
Pulling 50 miles a week currently and plan on putting 10 more to that number.

I do it because my sanity needs it. Been through a very painful heartbreak after having the guts to fall in love again. Now back to square one again. But I want to get better and love again. and again.

serpix··on Google Duo, a simple 1-to-1 video calling app
Is there anything currently that works similarly without a google or Facebook account? My dad is so computer/phone illiterate that he cannot/won't register for either of these.

It should work across iPhone/Android.

I ask because video calling between my son and my dad is no longer as simple as FaceTime after I switched to Android

serpix··on Venezuelans Ransack Stores as Hunger Grips the Nation
Please give examples of countries doing socialism right.
serpix··on What are the biggest headaches as a developer or systems admin?
Traditional infrastructure. after doing a few projects with cloud based deployment I am now at a loss of words for the frustration of having to order a server, wait for it for weeks. Get it with insufficient ram, firewall locked out, it's shared by twenty other developers and I have to deploy using chef because that's what we always use.

All this is so behind the times the waste of time and money is appalling.

serpix··on The rotational North Pole is moving east at 14 cm per year
instead of assaulting the poster directly we should pick up where he left and think of ways to improve the situation. Bickering just breeds more negative thinking
serpix··on ES6 is beautiful
I recently witnessed the absurdity of arrow functions NOT returning implicitly if you put the function body in {}. It's a shit show.
serpix··on Model 3 Unveiling [video]
it is most likely limited. Just like the the Chevrolet Volt can do ~5 sec when the firmware is altered.
serpix··on Anxiety and Depression Are Symptoms, Not Diseases
I have dropped all anxiety medication after starting a very regular and strict meditation routine. today I was in a large meeting/workshop with mostly unknown (to me) people. This would previously have caused major anxiety symptoms, possibly even an full blown panic attack hours ahead of the meeting or during.

Yet I felt happy and energized by just being with these people and being mindful at the same time. Any racing thought quickly identified and dismissed. Never experienced anything like this before. I now truly think anxiety can be blown to shreds by applying what you learn in meditation in your daily life.

serpix··on Anxiety and Depression Are Symptoms, Not Diseases
This is exactly how I get out of depressive or anxious periods. Somehow the clarity of lying in bed being as painful as getting up hits home and whoop you're on your way out of the slump.

This does not work on all people though, I know of one person who's been resistant to medication, meditation, therapy.. none of it seems to truly change thought patterns. It just keeps coming back time after time.

serpix··on Real-time emotional voices with D.A.V.I.D
This is going to be used in propaganda if not already.
serpix··on Ask HN: What books do you wish your manager would read?
By definition if you know what your manager should be doing you're in the wrong position.
serpix··on Complaining Rewires Your Brain for Negativity
I work the negativity out by doing physical things which give pleasure, like running and tinkering with electronics.

But by far the most effective is other happy people.

serpix··on Java 8’s new Optional type doesn't solve anything
If you are certain optional has a value, don't use optional.

Checking presence of value of an optional is an anti-pattern, the same as doing != null checks.

You should treat Optional the same as a List type with size 1. You never check if a list is size 1 before doing map or filter.

serpix··on The paranoid person's guide to a complete Mac backup
I would really like a good archiving service. Backup is one thing but I can't keep an ever growing stash of data, I want t offload this data in a redundant way. Is there such a thing? Backup is not archiving!
