the icons are beautiful good job. I can't seem to select any categories though.
serniebanders··on Show HN: I built a gamified forum to help hackers fund each other
I don't know if I'm the outlier here, but gamification did nothing but harm in my life, I'm scared of being sucked into anything gamified :'(

It brought out the worst in me to try to maximize "points" and it made me hostile towards people I feel threatened by (people rising in points towards me) and then it brings out an unhealthy zeal to accumulate more points until I burn out.

serniebanders··on Life Is Short (2016)
Life is short when you want more than what is available around you. I just chill, tend to the nature around me, do my best, and try to make people around me happy. Simple life, just the right amount of time.

I don't find the video fascinating, quite the opposite actually. Richard Feynman could have just explained the electrical force and left out the rest. When someone asks, `why does x work`, its a sign that they are curious and ready to explore and learn. Its an opportunity to teach and educate.

The whole video (to his credit, Richard did explain the concept well) focuses on how little the questioner know. It is a little belittling. If someone talked like that to me I'd have gone home and accepted the fact that I just would never understand electromagnetism and moved on.

A better approach instead of actually capitalizing on this curiosity and teaching the questioner, giving them just a bit more than the normally accepted answer so the curiosity lives on.

Rephrased for my understanding: as long as my non-profit don't pay them for work and we just give them money to help them out, that is okay. Thanks.

Sounds like I should start that nonprofit, it is exactly what I wanted. Thank you.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask, but I thought I'll try because I couldn't find much information online.

My neighbor is a really nice undocumented immigrant family. The family has 2 hard working kids who used to tutor others kids in the neighborhood to make income. They are now suffering because they don't have work and they need help. I have been giving them a monthly stipend to help them pay for food and rent. (2k / month).

I'm thinking of starting a non-profit charity so I can write off the money I'm giving away as donations.

Question is, are non-profit charities allowed to help undocumented immigrants? Or are American non-profits meant to help Americans only?

---

(Update based on answers) There are alot of wonderful charities that do these kinds of work. I specifically just want to help the undocumented immigrants I know (like my neighbors). It may be seen as unethical if I simply donated to a charity and asked them to use the money to specifically help my neighbors.

So I plan to start my own NGO to specifically help my neighbors first and then eventually other people around my local community if I get more funding.

Giving cash money to help them is okay if we make sure 100% they are not doing any work for me (or my org).

In case you have the same idea, hope these info helps you make your decisions. Thank you @proberts!

Update 2: Changed wording from illegal immigrants to undocumented immigrants so thread can focus on the right topic.

Health insurance is standard high deductible provided by my company. I don't care about retirement and emergency funds. 3 years ago I cleaned out my 401 and donated it and it actually wasn't so bad. I'm doing the max for tax deductible so that I get some company matching and no taxes but after I quit my job I plan to clean it out again and donate them like I did 3 years ago.

Imo, if you are truly happy, you can find happiness no matter how bad your situation is. So I don't care about the distant future. I optimize for the impact I can make today.

I realize my dependence on comforts made me mentally weak. I become easily irritable and feel exposed and vulnerable when I'm not around my comforts.

Ultimately, it started feeling like I'm paying to become mentally weaker so now I opt to live a life with nothing to lose.

After I no longer care about my income, I can now fearlessly call people out on their bullshit at work and challenge their decisions. It helped me focus more at work and make the right decisions instead of the easy ones.

I actually donated all of my income this year, all the money I earned after paying for food and rent. That amounted to about 300k. Saved my ass during taxes yesterday. Owed the government around 80k, but then after I put my charitable donations it looks like I may actually get some money back from the government (which again, I would be donating).

serniebanders··on A researcher on how to live a happy life
I understand. Purely anecdotal:

This is probably a very bad thing to admit, but it is true in my case. Once I stopped listening to researchers and professionals, I started becoming truly happy. I feel like I'm making my own decisions. Doing research and weighing options leads to self doubt which leads me down a painful dilemma. Now I just experiment and make my own decisions that feels right and it is very empowering.

serniebanders··on A researcher on how to live a happy life
I can confidently say that I am happy. Everybody close to me thinks that I was born happy and positive but they couldn't be more wrong. Achieving a permanent state of happiness took years of active mental exercises. Since I don't have any credible psychology background, nobody listens to my suggestions in real life. I doubt anybody would take me seriously here as well, but... all I have is time so this will help someone find their own path to happiness.

The first exercise I did in my pursuit of happiness was to understand what it means to be a happy person.

1. (At night) Would a happy person reach for the bottle of scotch? Why would he?

2. Knowing what I know about animal farming, would a happy person enjoy eating meat as much as currently am?

3. Would a happy person be as frustrated as I am with an under performing co-worker?

Once I had an idea of what a happy 'me' would do, I started going down a journey of self reflection. Why am I doing the things a happy me wouldn't do?

The whole journey helps me gain a higher resolution into my feelings and once my mind and my feelings are aligned, the negative feelings went away. My ability to empathize (initially I did not even know what that was) was no longer suppressed. Nowadays, negative feelings are rare, but every negative feeling and pain I feel is an opportunity to align my feelings and my logic.

I believe this: You will never be happy following someone's else's happy path.

You will be happy once you find the courage to confront your demons, reflect, and understand yourself better. Our minds does good job at hiding you from finding these demons, so a big part of the journey is finding and identifying them.
