sentinalien··on OpenAI unveils its first custom chip, built by Broadcom
How many profitable startups are there?
sentinalien··on Apple will soon receive 'made in America' chips from TSMC's Arizona fab
Plenty of chip design done in the US

Why is Intel more American than AMD?
sentinalien··on How immigration remade the U.S. labor force
How do all these people immigrate to the US? Is it all family-based? I work in technological field with many more opportunities in the US and have researched how to move there but it seems almost impossible. I know an American who applied for jobs in my country, got an offer and was over within a few months but that doesn't work the other way round.
sentinalien··on US chip factory workers say a struggle to survive on wages as industry booms
China is the largest market for chips by a pretty big margin
sentinalien··on Irish names you're probably saying wrong and how to pronounce them
There are 3 dialects of Irish and a lot of names are pronounced quite differently depending on which dialect you are using. Sometimes one particular variant has caught on across the island and in other cases there are multiple variants in use. https://www.abair.ie/ga gives you an accurate pronunciation of any Irish word in all 3 dialects
sentinalien··on Intel's Humbling
Basically all the big semiconductor companies do R&D in Israel

sentinalien··on The risk of RISC-V: What's going on at SiFive?
You would need several billion to build a fab, a few hundred million might get you a 5nm chip or two
sentinalien··on Is Software Engineering Real Engineering?
Formal verification is actually heavily used in the semiconductor industry these days
sentinalien··on Arm’s Cortex A510: Two Kids in a Trench Coat
Any particular reason they decided to write the RTL from scratch?
sentinalien··on China Bans iPhone Use for Government Officials at Work
Most big US HW/SW companies do have a significant presence in Europe and some other places like Israel, it's not like Europe has a lack of engineers and scientists capable of building this stuff, they are just mostly working for US companies
sentinalien··on New York Is Full. And it’s the housing market’s fault
Lots of first world countries take in more immigrants per capita than the US
sentinalien··on America is building chip factories. Now to find the workers
Yeah I've been working in digital ASIC design myself for the last few years since graduating college and the pay is pretty good but I'm trying to plan how to get out of the field because job opportunities are quite limited, you can't just switch companies every few years the way software engineers do, unless you live somewhere like Silicon Valley and I don't want to have to move across the country whenever I want a new job.
sentinalien··on America is building chip factories. Now to find the workers
Right now is particularly bad though, one of the worst job markets for this field in quite a while, it will pick up at some point
sentinalien··on Arm Announces Public Filing for Proposed Initial Public Offering
They're fairly competitive compared to the rest of the world. He is also working for a US company who could pay him more if they really wanted to. US salaries are high because the US has a glut of engineering jobs and is also a difficult place to immigrate to (generally requires you to have family ties or a job offer which is not easy to obtain when you might not be granted a work visa and won't realistically be able to start for about 6 months). If the US ever adopted a more lax immigration system in line with the UK, Canada, the EU etc I would expect US engineering salaries to drop.
sentinalien··on Ask HN: Is the market bad, or am I having the worst luck job hunting?
The job market is already pretty bad in the UK
sentinalien··on TSMC Exec Says Workers Unwilling to Take Shifts Should Not Enter Chipmaking
Sounds like they need a union
sentinalien··on U.S. universities are building a new semiconductor workforce
It isn't EEs building the likes of Vivado, they hire software engineers to do that stuff
sentinalien··on Google DeepMind
Really depends on what you're thinking of when you say technical
sentinalien··on Nicola Sturgeon to resign as Scotland's first minister
Do you have any examples of the grotesquely racist anti-English rhetoric encouraged by Sturgeon?
sentinalien··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
I understand this but I think the biggest driver for software salaries is the sheer number of companies that are interested in hiring software engineers. Plenty of hardware companies are very profitable but do not raise their salaries because there is no market pressure to do so as the more limited job market means EEs/embedded engineers do not switch companies nearly as frequently and switching companies is generally the best way to get a substantial salary increase.
sentinalien··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
This is true, trying to switch from FPGA's/RTL Design to something higher up the stack over the next few months for this reason. My employer does seem to have great difficulty hiring anyone with these skillsets but funnily enough, the salaries never seem to improve.
sentinalien··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
Not really no, 7 figure roles are few and far between
sentinalien··on Will young Americans want to work in semiconductor manufacturing? [video]
What is your software-adjacent but not software development job?
sentinalien··on It's astounding how bad the web is without an ad blocker
>They're prolly doing seriously brainiac next level AI and quantum computing stuff

Not true at all, ad software pays a lot better than "next level AI and quantum computing", unless you're talking about AI for advertising

sentinalien··on Ask HN: Chip startups?
You heard IshKebab, the entire field of chip design is not very technically challenging, obviously they have the pedigree to back up such a bold statement and are too modest to tell us
sentinalien··on Inside the Irish Republican Army (1994)
>In response to an audience member shouting "Up the 'RA", Gerry Adams famously replied with glee "They haven't gone away you know"

You're talking as if this happened recently and not nearly 30 years ago

>Sinn Fein to this day praises and commemorates former IRA murderers.

So what? How often do unionists have a bad word to say about the British forces that have spent centuries terrorizing and murdering Irish people? How are nationalists supposed to reconcile with people who by and large vote for political parties that do not support the GFA (presumably they would prefer to go back to armed conflict? perhaps the protestant supremacist state formed in 1921?) or turn up en masse to prance about in July with the deeply unpleasant orange order?

sentinalien··on Inside the Irish Republican Army (1994)
Well you clearly know fuck all about the topic then. The British military are guilty of several massacres and civilian murders in Ireland both before and after 1969 and either directly or indirectly through collusion with loyalist paramilitaries.
sentinalien··on Electrical engineers on the brink of extinction threaten entire tech ecosystems
I'm interested in hearing how you found transitioning from digital design to software development and what did you have to study in order to pass software interviews? I've also been a digital design engineer for the past 3-4 years since graduating but I would like to move into software development for my next job. I have some experience programming and a basic knowledge of CS/software topics but presumably not as much as a CS grad and would have to spend some time learning to close the knowledge gap.
