senthil_rajasek··on Flatpack field hospitals that can be airdropped to disaster zones
I love these IKEA hospitals and the quote at the end of the article assembled it all together,

"The hospital is a small contribution by India to humanitarian work around the world,” she said. “We are now ready to share it with any country that needs it.”

It reflects a new way of thinking and a fresh world view. A vastly different view from the one I grew up in (80s)... Which was huge headlines in NYT about how poor countries need aid and western aid organizations are helping them. When in reality it was "relief theater".

Good luck.

senthil_rajasek··on I spent 3 years working on a coat hanger [video]
Congratulations to the inventor.

But if space (depth) is the issue then there are many existing solutions like a "multi layer" hanger.

I just googled "multi layer hanger".

May be this has a use case or it simply scratches the creator's itch.

senthil_rajasek··on Portugal. The Man – Official Website Is a Google Sheets Document
If you already know a band's music or an artist work it may not matter as much.

But for artists who are not well known, a website can help make a great first impression.

I found this Apple Music for artists page a good intro on why promo/marketing materials are important.

https://artists.apple.com/support/1121-why-an-electronic-pre...

senthil_rajasek··on Portugal. The Man – Official Website Is a Google Sheets Document
Not really. Social media is feed based. Finding "on demand" info such as "when are they playing in my town?" is a nightmare even with pinned posts.
senthil_rajasek··on Portugal. The Man – Official Website Is a Google Sheets Document
Ahhh that totally makes sense. Thanks for researching and sharing.

Portugal The Man is "made" but my concern was that the new bands that are still struggling to make it should not take inspiration from this and create a google sheets website. That would be terrible for their career.

senthil_rajasek··on Portugal. The Man – Official Website Is a Google Sheets Document
Hmmmm ideally you want them to look for your best images not some random after show picture from a fan on social media.

Websites make it easy for you to control your promo material ( EPK).

senthil_rajasek··on Portugal. The Man – Official Website Is a Google Sheets Document
I love this band.

But this is actually a terrible idea.

Artist websites (IMO) have an actual purpose, keeping your audience updated with tour dates for one. Agents and venues looking for promo pictures. Festival planners looking to get a sense of your style etc.,

Artist websites have a variety of audiences.

My bet would be that they started tracking tour dates on a Google Sheet and decided to share it to a tour manager and here we are...

senthil_rajasek··on Jon Stewart's Show on Apple Is Ending
I wonder what the viewership numbers were?

The Daily Show had a constant buzz, and popped up in my newsfeed every once in a while.

I've never once had his Apple show pop up in my feed!

I haven't seen the show but I wonder if it had the same quality as The Daily Show.

senthil_rajasek··on Every aspiring writer should read terrible books (2022) [video]
The OP is about writing. Stand Up Comedy != Writing, stand up comedy is mostly a performance (art) with a little bit of writing.

I realized this after doing stand up comedy for over 12 years.

I don't know what makes good writing but I know that if it gets a laugh then it's a good joke.

No one has figured out the rules of what is good stand up comedy which is probably why studying comedy using "via negativa" or any other logical approach may not work.

Steve Martin touched upon this a little bit in his book "Born Standing Up" and there is a mention of his Philosophy background on his wikipedia page

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Martin#Early_life_and_ed...

senthil_rajasek··on Michael Burry shorts Major index in sizable bets
Or Do your own homework and you might conclude that it's no use timing the market?
senthil_rajasek··on Michael Burry shorts Major index in sizable bets
From earlier this year (Jan?),

Michael Burry of ‘Big Short’ fame expects another ‘inflation spike’ after recession rocks U.S.

" Cassandra B.C. @michaeljburry · Inflation peaked. But it is not the last peak of this cycle. We are likely to see CPI lower, possibly negative in 2H 2023, and the US in recession by any definition. Fed will cut and government will stimulate. And we will have another inflation spike. It's not hard.

"

None of these predictions were right.

The lesson here is always do your own homework. Or get a trusted financial advisor.

p.s since his twitter handles are ephemeral I saved the tweet that was attributed to him.

Hello,

I am an experienced software engineer with over 10 years of developing backend software for a major financial news publishing company in the U.S.

I am looking for a new opportunity in the same industry or outside.

Thanks

senthil_rajasek··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
I am from India and have lived in the U.S for over 2 decades. I have observed "affirmative action" arguments in two continents.

I am going to answer your specific questions,

>Why not just.. well, let poor people come first?

Racial justice issues are separate from economic justice issues.

Shouldn't this just be run-of-the-mill social democratic "lets hand out some extra opportunities/benefits to the poor" program?

Racism is a complex issue and in listening to Black/Asian/Brown Americans I have come to the realization that such programs have to be specific to each and every race because they experience racism in different ways.

senthil_rajasek··on Ask HN: Where have you found community outside of work?
Socializing with "in groups" like Indians getting to know Indians is not what I was referring to in my original comment.

I was talking about socializing outside of "in groups" which is what I found challenging.

senthil_rajasek··on Ask HN: Where have you found community outside of work?
I played tennis in a rec league a long time ago. It was not community but a substitute for light social interaction.

I guess similar things exist for Golf and pickleball.

I grew up in India and now live in the U.S.

Socializing or being a part of a community is surprisingly very very hard.

senthil_rajasek··on What Are Toys For?
I was hoping to get an insightful answer, something new but alas no.

A vague connection is made between toys, Descartes and a Pascal quote.

And no mention of toys from ancient civilizations,

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indus_Valley_Civilisation

Maybe this wasn't the goal but why a title that asks a sweeping broad question but gives a weak answer? It sort of makes this article click-baity.

senthil_rajasek··on What if ChatGPT was trained on decades of financial news and data?
Overall a good article. I learned that the financial news company Bloomberg has built a ChatGPT called BloombergGPT trained on a corpus of 700 billion tokens.

Here is the actual research paper from ,

https://arxiv.org/pdf/2303.17564.pdf

I can't tell if this is Bloomberg's attempt at solving a problem or if they are doing this out of FOMO.

senthil_rajasek··on Choose what to dream tonight
Despite the title "Choose What to Dream Tonight", "Just 10% to 20% of people are regular lucid dreamers".

Lucid dream, "is when a person is aware that a dream is happening and can sometimes influence events within it."

But you "could" lucid dream if you try,

a) setting an intention b) writing it down and repeating a mantra before you sleep c) If you catch yourself lucid dreaming then remind yourself what you wanted to do in your dream and d) after you wake up, write down your dream.

Seems like a fun experiment but there is no suggestion of any significant health or other benefits.

senthil_rajasek··on The poor, misunderstood innerText (2015)
Oh boy, this is an article from April 2015.

I had to look this ( innerText vs textContent) up yesterday and MDN had a much clearer explanation.

"The innerText property of the HTMLElement interface represents the rendered text content of a node and its descendants."

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/HTMLElement...

senthil_rajasek··on What happens when your phone is spying on you
I found this article very shallow. It covers only spyware that are installed when a device is physically compromised.

I was hoping it would cover spy/malware that install remotely through many more infection vectors like clicking text messages. I guess NSO/Pegasus malware has this capability.

I barely use any apps and would gladly settle for a flip phone... I value privacy more than the ability to order food through my phone.

senthil_rajasek··on Neal Stephenson doesn't seem keen on crypto anymore

There are so many hypotheticals and logical leaps here... This is not a useful argument anymore ... it's just you fantasizing.

I am out.

senthil_rajasek··on Neal Stephenson doesn't seem keen on crypto anymore
>Ah, but that counter assumes that there isn't some transaction aid that crypto currency also brings.

Except it doesn't.

senthil_rajasek··on Neal Stephenson doesn't seem keen on crypto anymore
My counter argument was only to your comparison to paper money.
senthil_rajasek··on Neal Stephenson doesn't seem keen on crypto anymore
The value of paper money is in it's utility as a transaction aid. It has currency.
senthil_rajasek··on Neal Stephenson doesn't seem keen on crypto anymore
>Same as the paper in my wallet.

Except paper money is understood and used by all today to make transactions and thus useful.

senthil_rajasek··on The Little Learner: A Straight Line to Deep Learning
I've read the Little Schemer and based on that, it has a unique style of teaching. Every new concept begins as a fun little question and through a series of more questions expands to a whole concept.

It worked very well for me in learning functional programming and some computational theory ideas.

Worth it.

senthil_rajasek··on The Black Ships Shock: A Historic Encounter That Changed Japan
Thanks for flagging the rayiner comment.

rayiner's original comment was defending colonialism.

"If it wasn’t for British colonialism, both of us would be subsistence farmers right now instead of on HN."

If you read his subsequent comment "forest/indoor plumbing" it is definitely sarcastic and comes off racist.

Further down he switches to India being older but does not consider that ancient Indian history is whitewashed in today's world in most western cultures.
