selectout··on A Tool Will Let You See Anyone’s Email Address on LinkedIn
Looks like all this is doing is trying every combo of first name, last name, initials, etc @ company's website the person was employed by.

Nothing new here that's actually hacking in though, just checking the combos for a positive return form rapportive (or really could just be pinging the email servers).

With that said it is in a nice and "consumer" friendly system, but even if this gets shut down you can do it manually very easily and always have been able to.

selectout··on How Turtl has no idea when you're sharing copyrighted stuff
Been using turtl (free) for a little while now and love it so far. It's made huge leaps and bounds over the past several months and I'm excited to see where it continues to grow.
selectout··on Whatever goes up, that’s what we do
It wasn't stuck at just the icons, it let you expand to see words as well. It was much better in my opinion and I rarely had it at the collapsed state like his screenshot shows.
selectout··on "Sharing economy" should share its wealth
Probably "sharing information" economy. I think if they wanted to they could make any company a part of the sharing economy.
selectout··on Out of 15M brackets, none remains to win Warren Buffet's $1B March Madness bet
It's actually none now. They sent out an email and push notification.
selectout··on Larry Page says "Fuck Off Poor People"
This is crazy sensationalist. There's no right or wrong way to spend your money, we can just hope that it's used to better humanity whether it's short or long term. I don't think Sergey is saying that to anyone, rich or poor.
selectout··on Show HN: March Madness for Hackers
WOuldn't this not take into account 12 seeds winning? Since you do team1.seed > team2.seed before checking if team2.seed is 12.

Also, this would mean 12 seeds would go all the way anyway, you're not limiting it to the first round only.

selectout··on Take Buffett's Billion
I've always been curious how many actually unique brackets get submitted to the major bracket places. I'd imagine there's about 5,000-10,000 unique brackets that cover 99% of the people.

It's the one feature I'd love to be able to see is if I have submitted a 100% unique bracket on my own.

selectout··on Show HN: March Madness for Hackers
This is awesome. Where are the data sources coming from for this? For free throw percentage, etc. I'm assuming this wasn't manually gathered as the teams were just announced yesterday and it'd be a hassle to do it so quickly.
selectout··on Show HN: A visual HTML5 animation editor in your browser
Would love a paid option of like $5-$10/month that gives me the actual source code so I can just take it and run it on my own stuff. Great work though!
selectout··on Kickstarter passes $1B in pledges
Isn't the 1bn just for pledged money though? Is there a breakdown of what percent of pledged dollars actually gets funded (when KickStarter takes their cut).

Not saying they didn't do well, but I'd estimate the cut they make is somewhere closer to 30-40mm and not 50mm.

selectout··on Show HN: API for Sales Research
Do you store any association of email addresses and what sites send them to you or is all of that just dropped immediately?

Also, thanks for replying! Great to see you don't just avoid the privacy issues like others do at times.

selectout··on Show HN: API for Sales Research
Not certain how willing I'd be to send a third party the unhashed email address of every (or even just a few) signups. Seems to be a big privacy violation and the users of the sites that use this should clearly state what they are doing.

I know tracking companies were getting in a lot of trouble for just having hashed versions of emails sent out and a lot of users of those sites were very mad. I'd be pissed if my email was being sent along without my knowledge.

EDIT: Outside the privacy risk though this actually looks really neat and helpful. I'm assuming this is using the rapportive API or something very similar. Neat service, just too many privacy risks for me to use it.

selectout··on Famous tech acquisitions’ cost per user
Didn't realize Aardvark only had 90,000 users. Huge win for the Aardvark team with that sale.
selectout··on Zuckerberg Pays $19B for Startup Whose Founders Couldn't Get Jobs at Facebook
Chances are he wouldn't have created WhatsApp at Facebook so this is actually a win all around for both parties (assuming Facebook can find the value they think they will in WhatsApp).
selectout··on Flappy Bird Developer Says He’s Taking The Hit Game Down Tomorrow
I think this may be the case, but wouldn't be surprised if he did take it down. He has plenty of money from this, the name recognition now that any releases he makes will get a decent amount of players, and he can just work on something with less pressure behind it.
selectout··on Overstock.com Is Now Accepting Bitcoins
I purchased off of cheapair.com using bitcoin yesterday and they use CoinBase as well for the merchant account. Extremely beautiful and seamless way to purchase, although I was a bit worried that it was actually just 1 button click to pay. I wasn't aware it was coinbase at first (I didn't read anything so partially my fault), but clicking the button made the payment and there was no verification. I would expect this to be a 2 step process. (I may have remembered this wrong, but I thought it was only 1 click to purchase)
selectout··on Overstock.com Is Now Accepting Bitcoins
While I know Alexa is far from accurate, it does show overstock.com to be the 621 largest universal site and 160th in the USA. That should show you scale.

In 2010 (Fiscal Year) they has $1.1 billion in revenue with 1600 employees. They are publicly traded with a market cap just under $750 million.

selectout··on Overstock.com Is Now Accepting Bitcoins
I'm impressed they followed through with this so quickly. Great to see the adoption starting to flow in places that non crypto nerds and tech enthusiasts visit.
selectout··on Your iPhone maps and logs where you are and when you're there
I know this has been discussed many times since the iOS 7 beta builds first release, but recently there has been a nice interface Google has released to see this data from your google account. Uses anything logged in with your google account (phone, computer, tablet, etc) and puts it in one central area.

selectout··on Ask PG: Which companies did YC pass up on but became successful later?
This gets asked a lot and won't get answered. The typical response is that they don't answer because it would violate the privacy of some of these founders/companies that may not wish it known they got rejected or even applied. If the founders want to share that they will, otherwise it's best left alone. Also companies may have the same founders/names but may have pivoted a lot or gone in a different direction so it could be a completely new company.
selectout··on Google Wallet Card
While true, CC companies sell our data to other aggregators. So it's just adding in profit to a middleman while google is doing it themselves.
selectout··on Rap Stats: Breaking Down The Words in Rap Lyrics Over Time
the is around 5%
selectout··on Twitter makes IPO plans official: expected value is about $14B
This just means that their revenue is under $1 billion, not that they are valuing at that.
selectout··on 55% of U.S. iOS users with Google Maps use it weekly
Could be due to the fact that a lot of people don't have a weekly need of a maps application. I'm a heavy phone user and google apps user but only need the maps app maybe 2-3 times per month at the very most.
selectout··on Chromecast update breaks AllCast
Any chance you'd be willing to put the code up on GitHub so other Chromecast users can just add it locally and whitelist it?
selectout··on Show HN: What does it feel like to be one of 7 billion? (built with D3)
Great work, but would be great for a frame of reference to add something at the end that zooms back out (and maybe uses a different scale to fit on screen) that shows you against everything.

As soon as I discovered to click to go to the next tier, I just kept clicking and didn't pay attention to how many levels, how many people, etc.

Otherwise great work!

selectout··on Show HN: Generate slick email sigs
Looking purely from a design/usability this looks great. I was a bit confused at first that you literally just copy and paste the resulting signature, I was expecting some form of actual html code I can copy.

Also, I wouldn't block out the color boxes. I know the exact color of my logo that I'd like the links to be, but it's very hard to find it just by using the color swatch

selectout··on How Google—and 104 Other Companies—Are Tracking Me on the Web
It's a lot more than 105 companies.

But I always hated the word tracking for them. They fall into many different categories. Some companies collect behavioral data, others personally identifiable information, others bring offline info online, some are seen across various sites but only because they are integrated in other services. So they aren't necessarily tracking you but partnering with one that is.

Also a lot of these are the backbone of ad:tech which powers the free services people use daily.

Now some of them are definitely not necessary and worthy of blocking, so really it comes down to what privacy means to you. Personally I'm fine with most, but many people are not.

Just remember the old overused phrase does stand true. If you're not paying for it, you are the product.

selectout··on Apple Adds Two-Step Verification to iCloud and Apple ID
Great to see this as finally an option, interesting that there is a 3 day wait to activate it though...just to be certain it is my identity that wants to add it.
