selectout··on Coinbase says hackers bribed staff to steal customer data, demanding $20M ransom
Companies want the ability to use things like emails, names, and other data for user experiences (go to settings, see name and change it), advertising (target this address book for X ad), etc. So these are typically plaintext (oversimplified) and accessible by different systems while passwords or private keys have one use case only and can have a higher bar of protection.
selectout··on Minimum Wage Clock
This. I am okay showing total comp, but the numbers also seem...weird? Like Zuck makes $1/year salary. $27m/year which is mostly security expenses if I remember correctly, but has by far the largest net worth (of those listed) which is what people care about. And his stock appreciation is vastly higher than that shown.
selectout··on LinkedIn is laying off nearly 700 employees
This isn't the first round of layoffs there
selectout··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
I'm always curious if he just set aside say $250k/year (2 year contract maybe?) to the top 100 content creators at Twitter/IG/TikTok today.

Add $25 million to the annual costs and have the chicken/egg problem semi-saved.

selectout··on Electric scooter ban increased congestion by 10% in Atlanta
Wouldn't it be worthwhile to share out the flaws for people that don't live in Atlanta or really even cities with Scooters?
selectout··on France is paying car drivers nearly $4k to switch to an electric bike
Speaking of electric bikes, does anyone have any good recommendation for somebody looking to get started in biking in general for commuting purposes? I'm not a historical biker and not looking to replace the ~20 mile radius I drive with this, but ~3-5 mile radius including smaller grocery trips and going out for dinner/meeting friends/office trips is what I am looking for. If I commit to this happy to upgrade over time, so not looking to go all out now.
selectout··on Twitter Terms of Service Diff
There are often regulations requiring you give users notice before making these changes. So beginning yesterday would provide 30 days notice (1 full month) allowing people time to react, respond, etc.

selectout··on Forget privacy: you're terrible at targeting anyway (2019)
Could also be that if you only purchase 1 item from a store you might forget the stores name, but referrals for large purchases are likely a big driver of their business so they want to make sure you do remember where you got this from in the hopes you can refer one person to make a purchase.

A multi-thousand dollar purchase is likely worth it for an extra $15 in targeted ads to somebody.

selectout··on YouTube TV removed from Roku channel store amid Google contract dispute
While the sparring happens here as they are both ads companies, there's nothing to say the sparring won't happen between Google and Apple if they wanted the same level of customer data and Apple doesn't provide it.

selectout··on Privacy Policies Are an Incomprehensible Disaster
Did an analysis on Alexa's top 1000 sites and their privacy policies a few years back. A brief infographic of the high level of this https://mashable.com/2011/01/27/the-real-reason-no-one-reads...
selectout··on Apple announces Apple Card credit card
https://www.apple.com/apple-pay/where-to-use/

Overall I try and use Apple Pay where I can and find about 2/3 of the time I want to use it I can. My biggest struggles have essentially been at smaller stores that still just have basic square swipers and obviously the occasional cash only locations.

selectout··on Tesla Model 3 Stolen from Mall of America Using Smartphone
TSLA most certainly could have tracked it just using the GPS and woken the car (or even bricked it) remotely. Superchargers may have been used, but definitely weren't needed to track this vehicle.

selectout··on Tesla issues strongest statement yet blaming driver for deadly crash
Are you talking about vehicles in general or Teslas? I've had a Model X for about a year now and can say that just having hands on the wheel definitely does not generate enough torque to deter the warnings on Autopilot, it definitely requires a "yank".
selectout··on Tesla issues strongest statement yet blaming driver for deadly crash
A big part of being allowed to take your hands off the wheel is probably "how do I detect the hands are on the wheel?". In current S/X with no interior camera the way autopilot works is you have to "yank" the wheel every now and then to prove you have your hands on. Requiring constant "yanking" wouldn't work, and there are often long stretches of roads on highways (where Autopilot is meant to work) that wouldn't require any movement of the wheel at all so they wouldn't know the difference between hands on or off unless you "yanked" it.
selectout··on Data on 1.2M Facebook users from 2005 (2011) [use archive.org url in thread]
I think you are asking about removing the apps you have authorized through facebook and not the actual facebook apps themselves?

If so it should be in settings on mobile (is on iPhone at least and it's just a webview). It takes a lot of steps, but definitely there.

selectout··on Show HN: Self-generated custom art for your home or Airbnb
This is awesome. My first thought was I wish I could make this map for all the key places for my wedding, although forcing the "House Rules" and "Contact" section make that awkward. Also wish I could adjust where the zoom bubble is located.
selectout··on Ripple Slides After Coinbase Says Not Adding New Crypto Coins
The key here is that they linked to their requirements for adding Cryptos, which strongly suggest that XRP will not be added for not being decentralized. This doesn't directly say it has to be fully decentralized though, so it's a bit of interpretation.
selectout··on Tesla's Model 3 volume production target pushed back again
Tesla essentially went from test production in Q3 to matching Model S/X weekly production by the end of Q4.

While they are still ~6 months behind schedule, the way they are able to kick off an entirely new line is still impressive in it's own regard.

Remember, Elon Standard Time.

selectout··on Tesla “Camper Mode” (2016)
I'm still awaiting for the update myself or to hear from others on what kind of battery drain to expect from 12 hours of use. Super excited for this feature though.
selectout··on Google Pixel 2 and 2 XL announced
(personal antidote) I had 3 pairs of headphones I primarily used pre-removal of the headphone jack. 2 bluetooth (working out and @work) and the third was a nice pair for at home listening. I have no problems with a dongle always connected to my nice pair, and have actually found myself using bluetooth more often regardless of Aux port availability.
selectout··on Tesla Model S Hits 300k Miles with less than $11k maintenance costs
All older S and X have free unlimited supercharging, and new ones do as well if brought via a referral.
selectout··on Blue Apron Files for IPO
Agreed 100% on these points. My traditional behavior now is to stop all shipments, if there is a new type of meal/technique in one of the weeks then I order there. Typically get about 1 shipment every 4-5 weeks instead of weekly.
selectout··on Would You Rather Have $1M or $5,000 Monthly in Retirement?
Depending on your life insurance plans, $1mm could be very nice if you aren't already in great health.
selectout··on Ask HN: Is the Thiel Fellowship worth it?
I wasn't in it myself but am friends with several who were. It seems to be absolutely worth it. As morgante said earlier, you can always turn it down.
selectout··on Founders Fund Raises $1.3B
This is an example of just Facebook. I think all big time VCs have turned down mega companies that would have made them $$$$$.

Also, Zuck did have a crazy grind work ehtic which would have gotten him most likely 1 point. And he did have a good history of projects he had built before and shown competence, maybe not multi-million dollar ventures but a lot of good chops.
