seemslegit··on Most detailed ever photograph of The Night Watch goes online
> The 24 rows of 22 pictures were stitched together digitally with the aid of neural networks.

I can totally see how that went down:

Engineer: We really don't need neural networks to do that.

Project person: <Angry look>

Engineer: One image-stitching "neural" "network" coming right up, do you want it "deep-learned", "convolutional" or both ?

seemslegit··on Ask HN: I've been promoted to Architect. What do I need to learn/do to excel?
System or software architect ? As the product grows the two diverge rather fast.
seemslegit··on New math proves that a special kind of space-time is unstable
Then why do we care so much about AdS/CFT correspondance ?
seemslegit··on New math proves that a special kind of space-time is unstable
“If you perturb AdS space-time and wait a sufficient time,” Moschidis said, “you’ll end up with a different geometry — one that contains black holes — and it’s no longer AdS. That’s what we mean by unstable.”

But our universe is known to contain black holes and yet isn't it being AdS considered an open question ? Or is it only an open question about the universe during its infancy ?

In the same way your sales posture determines how well you identify, qualify and convert leads and your product posture determines how well you design, execute and market-fit your products - yet somehow we never felt the need to add 'posture' to these.

The end result is another obfuscation layer of corporate-speak on something that should be pretty concise and bullshit-free.

seemslegit··on NSA Cyber Unfetter Project
OK seriously we need to have a talk about this whole 'posture' thing.
seemslegit··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
It's called defecting if you committed that espionage for Russia or cooperated with their intelligence while there, which while not entirely impossible is not very likely either.
seemslegit··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
That's not crucial at all, if he was a Russian asset he would have been behaving the same way - criticising Russia in ways that resonate with his audience to establish credibility but not in ways that actually pose any threat or embarrassment to Russia. But on the balance of publicly available evidence it seems far more likely he is stuck there due to lack of choice.
seemslegit··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
Depending on the mechanics of passport cancellation it could have been both, that is the US could have issued a cancelation order while he was still in HK but HK either did not act on it in time or refused to honor it like it did with Snowden's arrest warrant. The fact that Russia did honor the passport cancellation and did not issue him an alternative travel document is more suggestive but would have been the same if Russia just wanted to hang on to him for the simple reasons of being Russia.
seemslegit··on Elon Musk: ‘Too many smart people go into finance and law’
Elon Musk prefers his knowledge and skill workers financially and legally illiterate, understandably so.
seemslegit··on Elon Musk: ‘Too many smart people go into finance and law’
Too many smart people care about stuff Elon Musk says.

EDIT: Changed my mind - not too many smart people in fact care about stuff Elon Musk says.

seemslegit··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
Maybe, but I think Snowden would have preferred to be pretty much anywhere else while Dammer was just too inexperienced to recognize that being popular in some circles is more of a liability than asset.

"As part of and a central stipulation of this agreement, the plaintiff agrees not to purchase a luxury convertible vehicle and drive it around Sunnyvale while having scantily clad models recite his original memo through megaphones."
seemslegit··on James Damore and three others end Google suit
Snowden did not "defect to Russia", he got stuck in Russia while in transit after the US cancelled his passport.
seemslegit··on On responses to “Bye, Amazon”
I still don't understand in what way Amazon warehouse workers are being treated worse than an average American warehouse worker working for someone other than Amazon.
seemslegit··on Ask HN: Keybase Alternatives?
telegram is not a secure chat app any more than skype or fb messenger are, there is some per-conversaion opt-in 'secure chat' feature with unknown guarantees that is not even available on the desktop client.
seemslegit··on Zoom Acquires Keybase
keybase doesn't have any 'security tech', zoom just needs a plausible fig leaf for the analysts that somehow associates with security.
seemslegit··on Zoom Acquires Keybase
"to make Zoom even more secure." I mean, this might take a while.
seemslegit··on Zoom Acquires Keybase
Until one day the foundation decides federation is not in the best interest of the community, the standards and reference implementation start to reflect closely the interests of the leading player[s] with other implementations having to play catchup. It would have been a very cynical take if it wasn't business as usual in our industry.
seemslegit··on Zoom Acquires Keybase
I can imagine keybase delivering a similar statement back in the day, good luck.
seemslegit··on Zoom Acquires Keybase
What endgame do you think your company has other than eventually selling out its userbase in one way or another ?
seemslegit··on Amazon locks down internal employee communications amid organizing efforts
That's why every workplace should have an off-company mailing list / forum / group.

Yes even your very employee-friendly workplace with image boards that would never stoop to those kind of tactics.

seemslegit··on Computational Category Theory in Python III: Monoids, Groups, and Preorders
One day I might read something that will undo my conviction that category theory is the mathematical equivalent of literary critical theory. But alas, it is not this day.
seemslegit··on The Rush to Stop the Asian Giant Hornet
You are technically correct, the best kind of correct.
seemslegit··on The Rush to Stop the Asian Giant Hornet
Plague, meet pestilence.
seemslegit··on Why Restaurants Are So Fucked
In what major city or urban area have restaurants been competing on price during the last two decades ? In fact the prices seem to have gone up consistently far above inflation with the dominant cost component being rent, local taxes and services.

Profitability is low because consumers reduce visit frequency and money spent per visit as the prices feel unjustified for value served even when priced at meager margins above cost, this in turn puts pressure on owners to make more money per-item further alienating consumers.

seemslegit··on The weird, get-rich-quick world of dropshipping
How come the people doing this don't get hammered on chargebacks and refunds ? What payment platform is willing to put up with them ?
seemslegit··on US patent office rules that artificial intelligence cannot be a legal inventor
In not-unplausible future reality: the anomalous robot dies about 2 and a half years old because of planned obsolescence, warranty is product-lifetime.
seemslegit··on Google's top quantum scientist explains why he resigned
And yet the private sector is not impeded by "freedom of the individual" when it comes to protecting investments with NDAs, non-competes all the way to Levandowski-style criminal prosecution.

Obviously noone should be forced to stay where they don't want to be or prevented to work where they want but in this case it's about what they take and bring with them beyond their innate skills.
