sedan_baklazhan··on Ukraine Can't Stop Russia's Jet-Powered Shahed Drone
Russia renamed it because it chose to. This is a general rule: if you produce something, you name it.

For example, the Storm Shadow missile in the UK is essentially the same as Scalp missile in France. Yet whoever produces chooses a name.

Renaming a Russian made drone is WEIRD. You can only name the weapons you make.

sedan_baklazhan··on Ukraine Can't Stop Russia's Jet-Powered Shahed Drone
Just repeating. This drone is named Geran-5. It is produced in Russia. Iran doesn’t produce such a jet drone at all.

Renaming another country’s weapon is a very weird propaganda move. Why would anyone do that?

sedan_baklazhan··on Ukraine Can't Stop Russia's Jet-Powered Shahed Drone
Drone’s name is Geran-5. It is also made in Russia, not in Iran. Nor does Iran produce such a (or somehow similar) drone. Nor does Iran claim any rights to it.

Calling it Shahed is a very weird propaganda twist.

sedan_baklazhan··on US Forces Exit Iraq
What military assets? Did that school contain those scary Iran nuclear weapons? BTW, where did Iraq store their WMD after all? In the oil wells, right?
sedan_baklazhan··on US Forces Exit Iraq
These are facts. American bases are destroyed or being withdrawn. USA can no longer protect its allies from Iran. Hence, Iran is becoming the only power in the region.

P.S. I have no idea what is Iranian state media or how to watch/read it.

sedan_baklazhan··on US Forces Exit Iraq
Iran is becoming the new regional power while USA is retreating from the entire ME.
sedan_baklazhan··on US Forces Exit Iraq
This system is rumored to be currently looking for nuclear weapons of Iran in some girl's schools.
sedan_baklazhan··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
When you are not comparing them with the Western subways, they still seem slow to ride. And people walk or run down and up all the time.
sedan_baklazhan··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
All ex-USSR subway escalators are much faster (hence better) than Western ones.

This is fun, because Soviet escalators were essentially copied from British escalators when the Moscow subway was constructed.

sedan_baklazhan··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
>Also you yourself is nondeterministic :)

All people are. That is how automation appeared to begin with - to provide deterministic behavior.

sedan_baklazhan··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
Calculators never were non-deterministic by design.
sedan_baklazhan··on Jury finds Facebook liable for deceiving users in Cambridge Analytica case
We'll probably see similar decisions on misbehavings of major LLM companies ~2036, when it won't matter anymore.
sedan_baklazhan··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
It is insane how many times I see this false analogy repeated on HN over and over (analogy of a deterministic-by-design calculator device (or a compiler, etc.) and a non-deterministic-by-design LLM software).
sedan_baklazhan··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
There was actual law enforcement in the Soviet army. Hence, there was no genocide of the German people (which would be a completely justified and understandable action from any Soviet soldier's point of view). On the contrary, US military is absolutely free to violate any war rules.
sedan_baklazhan··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
The Chinese people future would be much different (the genocide would go on) if there wasn't USSR in charge in the region.
sedan_baklazhan··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Soviet army in the WWii.
sedan_baklazhan··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Germany would never be held accountable unless defeated by the USSR. And even so, it was still very limited responsibility.
sedan_baklazhan··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Absolutely; but that won't apply to any Western army.
sedan_baklazhan··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
That is absolutely irrelevant. USA will never take responsibility. Nobody will be prosecuted. No compensations will be paid.
sedan_baklazhan··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
It is not just about artists. It is about every kind of intellectual work: scientific research, essay, fiction, painting, software, etc - the list goes on..
sedan_baklazhan··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Indeed. If I take somebody's work, transform it somewhat and sell it, I should pay royalties (unless the author explicitly allowed me to do so). That is exactly the case.
sedan_baklazhan··on U.S. Strike on Iranian School May Have Been War Crime, U.N. Report Says
Neither morale nor any understanding of international war rule treaties.
sedan_baklazhan··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
AI overall is the ultimate piracy crime.

I wonder what a token cost would be if AI companies were to pay royalties to every author who made their business even possible.

sedan_baklazhan··on U.S. Strike on Iranian School May Have Been War Crime, U.N. Report Says
Unintentional double tap, followed by highest level accusations of Iran bombing its own school with Tomahawk missiles bought somewhere, sounds very plausible.
sedan_baklazhan··on U.S. Strike on Iranian School May Have Been War Crime, U.N. Report Says
> Im not even sure this should be prosecuted as a war crime since Iran does not participate in the international law of armed conflict.

Wow. International treaties do not free you of your obligations on the basis of other side of war commitment to them. I don’t even need to check if the statement is true, because it absolutely is irrelevant.

sedan_baklazhan··on Ask HN: Can LLMs be used to invent a new human language?
There's no need in a new artificial language. If there was a need, humans could easily invent one without any LLM assistance, just like we invented Esperanto. But there is none. BTW, English is neither the first nor the last international language. It will be (and is gradually) replaced by others.
sedan_baklazhan··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
>your weak propaganda-farm talking points

I always take such personal insults as a confession in loosing an argument.

sedan_baklazhan··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
>illegally operating against sanctions

The only legal sanctions on Earth are those imposed by UN Security Council. All the rest is just an agressive action. The Western sanctions themselves are not legal in any way.

sedan_baklazhan··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Particularly, Europe is constantly trying to seize Russian ships.

Re: flattening Moscow and Petersburg: all "potential" threats are really pathetic.

sedan_baklazhan··on Where to buy a non-Apple, non-Google smartphone
I'm writing this reply from an AuroraOS phone (a descendant of Sailfish OS).

Yes, it is quite hard to get a non-duopoly smartphone..
